One thing worth acknowledging is that legendaries are not handed to you; you had to go out of your way to find them. They weren't given much explanation either; they weren't made out as some random gods or guardians of something, which makes their lore more mysterious. Gen 3 afterward not only does the storyline focus intensely on them, but they hand them to you.

In other words, legendaries felt like legendaries.

HMs were actually balanced and didn't feel like a burden
Starters were all cool (yes even bulbasaur)
Best mon designs in the series imo
Periodic rewards for filling up the pokedex
Rival that's the right balance of competitive and sparky but not obnoxious, with a good difficulty
Safari zone/zoo was cool
Lavender town is memorable

Team Rocket is still the best team for just being the mafia, complete with gambling and positions in authority

gen 1 is a great base and they built a lot on top of it, people who wanted it to remain untouched are stupid

When did the games start doing something right?

that's what ironically made them more legendary

Pocket Monsters actually felt like Monsters, rather than friendly mascots to sell cards, plushies, etc.

Not only HMs but exploration as a whole was very well thought - further parts of the game unlock theough variety of ways - HMs, items used in different ways, defeating wild Pokemon (Snorlax), clearing dungeon (Sylph Co.), various puzzles etc. It's not only HMs or retard blocking your way with no further explaination.

Gen 1 has some creative mons that still hold up today. The side content was solid and the first movie was fantastic. For a first venture, they knocked it out of the park.

No strings attached powerful/fun moves given to players that explore and interact with surroundings

Before the 4th gym I can have rock slide, bubblebeam, thunderbolt, and body slam and ice beam for my team. I love gen 2 but they immediately backtracked on this idea -- most of the TMs are underpowered, and almost all the good ones are super lategame finds. Teambuilding was more fun in gen 1 when you could actually put good moves on your team to use DURING the game, not when you've already beaten 90% of it. There's a reason the elemental punch TMs in gen 2 are remembered so fondly; it's just fun to have access to good coverage moves without lategame or tedious requirements attached like saving up thousands of coins

The side quest just to wake up snorlax was great.

Yeah now that you mention it, there's only 2 or 3 retarded roadblocks in the game. The drunk man in viridian, the rocket grunt in front of silph Co, and the cinnabar gym being locked. They have more diverse forms of roadblock and don't heavily rely on the guy blocking the way for no reason and leaves for an unrelated reason

Something I don't think it gets enough credit for is the dungeon design, they're fun to explore, conceptually unique and interesting.
The fancy cruise ship, corporate office building taken over by a gang, underground casino criminal hideout, cemetery tower with ghosts and witches, abandoned power plant, abandoned secret genetic research lab.
Plus all the cave dungeons feel distinct and memorable.
They kind of went downhill after gen 1 for some reason.

I like how Saffron City is sort of center to both the region AND the plot. Once you reach Cerulean Saffron becomes a problem; the guards will not let you in. You have to go around to Lavender Town and then cut under Saffron to Celadon to be granted passage, and there's still nothing you can do there until you oust Team Rocket from their hideout in Celadon and from occupying the Pokemon Tower in Lavender, which is all to obtain the Poke Flute to get to Fuschia. The climax of the Team Rocket plot lies at the center of Kanto, which everything circles around.

Sadly you're forgetting the guy in Pewter who forces you to beat brock.

There's also a lot of skips you can do. If you have a Pokemon that knows Cut you can skip Vermillion City entirely. You can use a Poke Doll to skip the Rocket Hideout by using it on the ghost Marowak (only works in gen 1), thus letting you shortcut to Fuschia.

>They weren't given much explanation either
They were if you were paying attention.

>random bird keeper tells you about legendary birds
>a trainer in cinnabar gym tells you a story how blane was saved in the mountains by motres
>you read about all three in cinnabar lab mail, plus about mysterious pokemon in cerulean cave
>everything about mew and mewtwo in old mansion
