How are "Dex Holders" still special when the Pokedex is now just a smartphone app?
What's the point of a pokemon encyclopedia if you can't share it with the world?

Yeah the concept in Special truly is incompatible with the idea that the Pokedex is now a universal application, having evolved from its original state as a unique still-in-testing device. If anything I think Special would do well to do the same, which I think they did in SV?
