>>57211811Both DP and XY were the embodiment of "yup this is a Pokemon game". Probably because they were the first Pokemon games on a new system, Game Freak chose to not take too many risks. Which is why there's only one gym in XY with a Mega Pokemon.

If we're just talking DP and XY, the overly focusing on online to the detriment of the game's performace way, sure. I'd also say it continues an overreliance on old Pokemon to the exclusion of new ones (and the "evolutions" of older Pokemon mostly being post-game) thing too, but it's functionally different enough that it's not as bad as DP. Unlike Gen 4, XY didn't get the reasonable post-game they had planned and cut for a third version they didn't make, and the remake is super scuffed compared to HGSS. Furthermore, XY carried over some decisions from BW without taking into account the context for them, which make the experience overall worse. One big problem I had with BW's climax is you being forced to catch the legendary, while I get it tied in with the actual story it goes against the themes of the game (USUM's cutscene before the E4 with your starter is more in line with N talking to it at the very start, as a big example) and made the two most difficult battles in the main story easier. On the other hand, for some reason XY makes you catch the legendary before the climax of the evil team plot, forces it in a battle that's not terribly hard, and then you just have it for the rest of the game. This isn't even getting into their boss design similarities, but I've gone on long enough at this point.

The Mega Evolutions of classic Pokemon were similar to the huge amount of Sinnoh Evolutions, unlike Gen 5 which was mainly new Pokemon. Professor Sycamore researched Evolution with Professor Rowan, so he is a successor in a way. Also because it was new hardware, XY improved the wifi and battle features that defined Gen 4 in the 2000s.
