I mean yeah but it just comes down to ease of use, the gameboy games have two decades worth of documentation and tools to use, and even then it's still quite a tedious endeavour to make a complete hack. the simple reality is most people making hacks want to take the path of least resistance because they're more interested in telling a story or building a world than in doing heavy programming, and to hack a newer game like SM you would essentially be starting from scratch, with an engine much more complicated than the gameboy games. it's going to take a long time and a significant community effort before those newer games are accessible. I mean, emerald only *just* got decomped a few years ago which is why there's a big wave of emerald hacks recently.

Just beat Radical Red again. I've had a great time playing it, although I feel 4.1 was noticeably easier than 3.1 (then again, I knew what to expect, whereas last time I played I went in blind). There was no boss where I got trully stuck, whereas in 3.1 Koga, the back to back Rocket Admins and Agatha were absolutely ridiculous. Thundurus and regieleki were old reliables for the E4, and genesect managed to hit four zapcannons in a row, so the champion ended with half his team paralysed from the beginning.

You could change the sprite scaling which would make them look pixelated unless you also replaced all the sprites with higher res ones. Also it would most likely have a lot of other unintended consequences. I'm almost certain that it would break a shitload of battle animations. It's because everyone sucks at essentials or they try too hard. You could make a game in essentials that on the surface is visually indistinguishable from base fire red aside from a few menus. Something like Radical Red is extremely easy to replicate almost 1:1. People always try to use all their own custom assets but they either don't take the time or they miss glaring issues in these massive graphics libraries. Then on top of that they tack on their shitty code. Not to mention that most essentials games are running on a version that's like over 5 years old at this point when the performance has come a really long way especially with the last 2 versions.

It's a shame really. There's so much you can do with essentials and it's so much easier to work on. If the people doing romhacks focused their attention there instead they could probably make some great things. I also feel like it's already too late in terms of its reputation. Like I said the current version 21.1 is really good but I feel like all the earlier shittier versions have already left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Now you're stuck in a situation where a small group of people that are good at assembly take months or longer to implement simple features that someone competent in coding could implement in essentials in a few days or less.

Honestly there's nothing wrong with that. The bar for storytelling in Pokemon has never been high. Most players won't mind a generic story if the rest of the game is good. Keep it minimal and make it feel like the player has some agency most of the time. A Dragonball Fanmanga that started in roughly 2008 and has been going since, currently at a pace of 3 pages a week. It's set 10 years after the end of Z, the premise being a multiversal tournament between 20 parallel universes. Every other chapter they bring in a guest artist to illustrate a special about one of tge competing universes and what sets them apart/when and where they diverged from the main universe (U18), and the butterfly effect that followed.

I started reading it back in 2015, that's around when they brought in the current main story artist, Asura, who's incredibly talented. Highly recommend it if you're a DB fan!

Based, I joined a ton of romhack servers recently and realized how many hacks I'm looking forward to as well. Getting notified right away about new releases is a gamechanger.

You don't have to get it perfectly on the first go, or at all desu. Unbound's 1.0 story had some pretty rough parts that got workshopped pretty hard in 2.0, and now it's considered the greatest hack by lots of people. You don't even need to put as much emphasis on the story or villains unless its something you're very interested in doing, just a grounded story of thwarting some crooks and helping others is all some people could ever need. So long as it's fun to play.

Maybe you could try reflecting on some of your favourite stories and characters from over the years, and borrow/remix any elements you really like? I'm no storywriter myself though, but like the other anon said Pokemon stories are usually pretty mid, almost obligatory feeling. No need to sweat the smaller stuff, just focus on the parts you're passionate about and I'm sure the rest will come to you in time.

I'm not sure if any anon here knows how to mess around with ruby script, but i've been playing and trying to learn how to mod a few games built on the reborn engine and i have been trying with no success to implement new Pokemon into these games, i implement the Pokemon's coding (Great Tusk), found sprites and cries for it, take care so that there are no syntax errors in the coding, compile the data via debug, everything goes perfectly until i try spawning the Pokemon via debug, is there a parameter i'm missing or a specific reference i have to set within the code for it to work? It sadly doesn't have a PBS file either, so you have to directly edit the code, which makes things a bit more annoying.

probably not much. the tools we have are already more advanced than the dev tools that leaked. maybe there's some stuff in there that could help with a gen 4 decomp, but I don't think it will be significant.
some of the leaked betamons might eventually be put into a hack, but they didn't generate as much buzz as the spaceworld betamons so don't hold your breath.

I really hope someone makes a romhack with the gen 3 betamons, something like gs 97 reforged but for hoenn, the problem is that we didn't really get beta maps from rs (well we did but they are pretty similar to the final ones).
I added the yeti guy just to see how the proccess of adding a pokemon goes and I discovered that I hate creating learnsets lol.

Years ago I designed artwork for a hypothetical arcade version of Gen I, based on the old Nintendo cabinets. I ended up doing a set for each version, and I've always wanted to build at least one of them. It would feature the Gen I and Gen II games, plus Pokemon Pinball, Pokemon TCG, and Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, as well as popular hacks of Gen I and II games. But the idea is the centerpiece of the cabinet would be a custom hack specifically to replicate what an arcade version of Pokemon could have been like (obviously ignoring the impracticality of a long RPG on a commercial arcade machine), while also serving as my own ideal version of the game would be.

The basic stuff:

>Limited to original 151
>No Sevii Islands
>No breeding
>All Pokemon achievable without trades
Version exclusives are respected, and are released into the wild post-E4. Eevee, the other fossil, the other Hitmon, and the other two starters are also locked to post-game. Trade evolutions can be done through Bill's teleporter.
>Physical/Special Split and Fairy-type added
>Shitmons buffed through a mix of stat buffs, new abilities, exclusive held items, re-typings, etc.
The goal is just to make all of them fun to use in the storyline, without going into retarded "Hypno is Psychic/Dark" shit
>Mew storyline involving Mr. Fuji and the Cinnabar Lab
>Gym Leader rematches with buffed teams

The more ambitious stuff:
>Pokemon Stadium tie-in
A new post-game area built north of Celadon City. Site of the World Tournament, where the hardest battles in the game take place. Also has Move Tutors, expanded TM shop, training facilities, etc.
>Cinnabar Lab Cloning Facility
Post-game substitute for breeding. Scientist at the Cinnabar lab can clone Pokemon. Berries and Star Dust can be consumed to influence IVs and Shiny odds. Altogether a more streamlined way to "breed" perfect Pokemon. Also has a source for Rare Candies and Exp. Candies for expedited leveling (referencing the Rare Candy glitch)
