They couldn't spare the extra couple cents to use different colored plastic filament when printing out the cards.

Pokemon Black was the last Pokémon game to have a cartridge with a color that reflects the game title.

I learned recently about gold plastic syndrome where specific types of gold plastic break down after a relatively short amount amount of time, even if something is completely untouched in box. It just starts to crumble as soon as it receives any sort of physical sensation. Transformers toys really suffered from this, but I've heard that the golden plastic they used for certain cartridges isn't safe either. This can also affect other colors of plastic that use a similar manufacturing process.

Anyway, I haven't heard about localized versions of Pokémon games having this problem, but they might as time goes on. This may be a reason Nintendo decided to stop manufacturing cartridges in different colors.

Depends on the plastic mix. The only cart I'm aware of that's affected by GPS is Majora's Mask since that's really more of a traditional gold plastic, whereas the gen 2 pokemon games are more like "plastic with glitter in them" rather than actual metallic-dyed plastic. Like I'm squeezing my pokemon gold cart just fine as I type this but I know if I tried the same to my Majora's Mask cart it would be in pieces already.
