Do you prefer regional variants or when Gamefreak "reboots" a Pokemon concept?
>>
The good regional forms can be counted on one hand, Zorua, Corsola,...
>>
>>57234344
Yamask, they’re all ghosts…
>>
>>57234336
The “rebooted” thing is also annoying but people really exaggerate how much they did that in the past, youve got maybe 5-6 Unova lines to point to and even then they have a much higher hit rate than regionals.
Regionals were done alright in SM and then just progressively got worse, now theyre doing Pokemon made of metal and Pokemon with spikes on them and giving them dex numbers to boot, I cant tell you how much Id want a new game of just 100 new ones and thats that.
>>
I don't see why they're mutually exclusive. Using your example much like dogs, there's a vast variety of moggy on this green earth that it's not strange for differing pokémon regions to have their own kittymon, nor is it odd that some regionally adapted to the new lands they found themselves in as they migrated around the world.
Regional forms are grand. Game Freak adding a new creature based off an existing base inspiration is grand. Retards crying one or the other happens, ignoring Game Freak design these cunts to earn money through merch to the point they decided to start re-designing creatures that clearly don't pull their weight merch revenue wise isn't grand. It's a symptom of the cancer infesting the series - a bunch of entitled dickheads whining the kiddy toy does things they don't want, like or desire, ignoring they aren't kids thus aren't relevant to Game Freak's intents.
>>
>>57234336
I prefer both. Real world has both so why can't Pokémon land?
>>
>>57234359
>people really exaggerate how much they did that in the past, youve got maybe 5-6 Unova lines to point to
>patrat expy of rattata
early route 2 stage rodent
>purrloin expy of meowth
2 stage cat found mid-game
>munna expy of drowzee
both based on the japanese trope of anteaters eating dreams
>pidove expy of pidgey
3 stage bird
>blitzle expy of ponyta
2 stage horse line
>roggenrola expy of geodude
3 stage rock line with a trade evo
>woobat expy of zubat
2 stage bat (zubat would get a 3rd stage but only in gen 2)
>drilbur expy of diglett
2 stage mole line
>audino expy of chansey
rare pure normal pink blob with massive EXP yield
>timburr expy of machop
3 stage fighting type with a trade evo
>tympole expy of poliwag
3 stage frog line
>throh and sawk expys of the hitmons
pure fighting counterparts, clearly connected but not evolutionarily (tyrogue would only be added in gen 2)
>trubbish expy of grimer
2 stage pokemon based on waste products
>emolga expy of pikachu
pikaclone trope
>foongus expy of voltorb
2 stage mimic trope
and that's excluding the more arguable instances such as Klink being an expy for the magnemite line, even then that's way more than "5 or 6"
>>
>>57234336
New is better than a variation of an original (Still regional forms are a good theory).
>>57234359
>Id want a new game of just 100 new ones and thats that.
I agree too. Black&White (not the sequels) had the good idea of main game being fully (or if anything mostly) being new pokemons, with only post game adding old pokemons.
Too bad GameFreak ditched it for more nostalgia shit, and filling the pokedex with a hundred old mons for bigger dex number, instead of a smaller but better quality one.
>>
I prefer a variant, the reboots just make redundant pokemon instead of giving variety to existing ones like different breeds of dog

I prefer all-new mons yes.

I do like regional variants which fix mons though like Hisuian Samurott and Hisuian Zoroark.
>>

>Entire dex is based on kanto dex
>i-ignore the Xs I had to add to make the comparison work
>i-ignore shit like comparing koffing and weezing to the ice cream line when the only thing they have in common is the "multiple heads" thing that dozens of gen 1 designs do, or like comparing dwebble to krabby on the sole basis of both being crabs or comparing Onix to Stunfisk because I really needed something to fill up those slots OK????
>IGNORE THEM

It depends, some of them are cool takes on existing Pokémon but others could have been their own concept. No reason Alola and Galar Meowth couldn't have just been their region's Skitty/Glameow/Purrloin/Litleo
I don't think it's fair to characterize Pokémon following an archetype as a "reboot" of the "original" Pokémon either. Pidgeot, Talonflame and Corviknight are all very different Pokémon even though they're all third-stage regional birds.
>>
>>57234495
>>57234613
It's great bait, if you see someone calling Terrakion a Nidoking knockoff how can you not call them a fucking retard
>>
>>57234336
I was on board with variants until they added regional evos and shit, now Hoenn zigzagoon is woefully overshadowed by Galar zigzagoon, same with Corsola, it got rid of the simplicity we’ve had for 20 years.
>>
>>57234490
So then Convergent evos are the worst of both worlds. Technically “new” but completely uninspired.
>>
>>57234508
>i-ignore the Xs I had to add to make the comparison work
sometimes they change the number of stages but what difference does it make?

>i-ignore shit like comparing koffing and weezing to the ice cream line when the only thing they have in common is the "multiple heads" thing that dozens of gen 1 designs do, or like comparing dwebble to krabby on the sole basis of both
they're literally the same thing, fused floating heads producing gas
dwebble is a crustacean like krabby

>Onix to Stunfisk because I really needed something to fill up those slots OK????
maybe you're right, but that's like 1 out of 151

>tao trio under legendary birds is quite a bad comparison
both are legendary trios of electric fire and ice types

>>57234662
japanese kaijus (nidoking, nidoqueen, rhydon and kangaskhan) don't really have unovan knock offs, but so do french musketeers so i paired them up because I figured they decided to change this japanese concept into something more foreign

>>57234613
prove it
>>
>>57234699
They kind of misunderstood the assignment for convergent evolution, It should be different animals feeling the same niche in a different place
Like how whales started off as wolf like creatures that turned into alligators when they went into the water
>>
Is every cat a reboot of meowth?
>>
>>57234495
This gave me brain damage
>>
>>57234851
if people say Roggenrola is a reboot of Geodude because it's a rock and Blitzle is a reboot of Ponyta because it's a horse, then why wouldn't Purrloin be a reboot of Meowth because it's a cat?
>>
>>57234336
We didn't need ten pikachus, ten pidgeys, ten caterpies, ten rattattas, ten goldeens and so on. The way they decided every game needs these same archetypes in the same places feels less like structure and more like blind tradition

Roggenrola if it was a reboot of geodude should have like two arms and eyes like geodudes. A reboot shouldn't just look like something entirely new. Take dmc dante for example he still looks vaguely like dante.

checked but Hisuian Arcanine is good
>>
>>57234336
Reboots at least force them to come up with a new design. With variants they just have to draw on top of an existing base.
>>
>>57234458
>game of just 100 new ones and thats that.
>I agree too. Black&White (not the sequels) had the good idea of main game being fully (or if anything mostly) being new pokemons
by far the worst part of the BW backlash is that they haven't made a fully realized new dex that can stand on it's own since.
>>

mushroom turned into jellyfish
eel turned into a mole

sounds like convergence

they misunderstood the assignment for a fanfic term?
the official term is "ecologically similar pokemon"
looks like it's the fans who misunderstood the concept

>>57234344
Regional forms that make the original obsolete and worthless are the absolute worst way to do them.
All regional forms should be 1 to 1 evolution wise
>>
>>57238777
I agree but how would you make a concept like Cursula work with the johto Corsola?
>>
>>57238887
Level up Corsola while it’s poisoned —> Cursola
>>
>>57234336
Original variants.
>>
>>57234336
The reboots are good when they are from the other side of the world (Unova vs Kanto, for instance). The reboots are bad when they are from a slightly different environment that is close to where the original comes from (Kanto vs Hoen, for instance). The regional variants are good when they are from a similar ecoregion or founder populations but are divided by time or other barriers (eg Kanto vs Alola or Hisui vs Sinnoh). The variants are bad when they are inexplicably the same species on the other side of the world (Kanto and Galar, for instance).

The “convergent evos” are fine when they are different enough, but bad when they are too similar looking (see Wiglet/Diglet vs Tentacruel/Toadscruel).
>>
>>57240020
>defending shitsuian forms
lol
>>
>>57238777
That's almost all of them.
Alolan Marowak, Ninetales and Sandlash all make their Kanto counterparts obsolete. And then you have shit like Farfetch'd and Mr. Mime which get exclusive evolutions.

First, it is not a reboot is a "western" counterpart created with that purpose of functioning as a reflection to generation 1 without direct links, such as discovering a new world, that was the original intention. How to compare Ultraman and Superman, have similarities such as alien heroes, but different contexts.

Second, if you are going to complain with the comparisons at least post the official sheet.

That's a good one too. It matches with mine well and there are some ohter clever thoughts. I don't know how you figured this is official. It's from someone's blog. I added google translation.

>>57234336
"reboot of the concept" doesn't mean what you seem to think it means from the example you posted (unless you think "concept" is synonymous with "animal the pokemon is based on"). by this metric, for example, simisear would be classified as a "reboot" of chimchar, even though that obviously wasn't the intent (and isn't how most people perceive them)
>>57234424
most of these are gross over-simplifications that, again, misstate or oversimplify the pokemon's "concept" with the goal of making them seem more similar than they are on a conceptual level. its like saying
>koffing expy of grimer
2 stage purple poison type based on pollution
>cubone expy of sandshrew
2 stage brown ground type found mid-game
>goldeen expy of magikarp
2 stage fish line
>zapdos expy of electabuzz
yellow and black-colored electric pokemon found at the power plant (and, as of gen 1, both were 1 stage pokemon as well)
>>
>>57240125
>Maneki Neko and Daruma Doll
>Lucky charms
Pretty clever
>>
>>57240215
You know that Meowth is based on japanese saying that you shouldn't give coin to a cat because it won't be able to appreciate it? In western world we say don't throw pearls before swine, and then they made Grumpig.

I feel that a lot of these are still pretty questionable. Ones like Mandibuzz to Marowack because they both have bones in their design, or the two grass lines because they're grass and use an evo stone. And in the third row they seem to just give up and say that the psychic types are similar because they're psycic types, or all the inorganic/colony ones are the same.

If I was to make it, I'd want to just narrow it down to just the inarguable 1-1 comparisons, like Hitmonlee/Chan to Sawk and Throh.
>>
>>57240470
It's 100% serious?

>>57240559
Just because they took one concept from old pokemon it doesn't make them copy or anything. It's ok to notice the pattern how they came up with these designs.

Mandibuzz actually has some references to Marowak in the pokedex so maybe they acknowledge it that way.
Lilligant and Whimsicott are both version exclusive stone evolving grass type lines. Lilligant is totally Vileplume or rather Bellossom. They even had middle stage for Lilligant before they scrapped it.
Alakazam and Gothitelle are three stage humanoid pure psychic types. Gardevoir is also part of this trope.
