Do you think it's bullshit gary sue shit if you give your protag Pokémon they owned before the story? For context, I want to do a rewrite of ZAs story to fix some things and make a romance between taunie and paxton, but I wanted to give paxton a few Pokémon ahead of time that helped define his character. Was thinking of giving him an Aggron, a Garchomp, and a Nidoking, but i don't know if that's too much or too op. They would be present, but not really on his team until his rank could use them.

So he's had them since he was around 4 when he was given his aron, and then obtained the gible when it tried to eat his aron, and when he turned 10 Nidoran was his first pokemon he caught. Once he gets to the city though, and obtains a totodile from Taunie, he decides to bench them until the rules of the royale say he can use them. They'll still be around for the slice of life moments of the fic though. Aggron is a happy giant, garchomp is kind of grouchy but still gentle, and nidoking is the peacemaker who mostly gets by on looking really scary.

While visiting that uncle a few years later, a gible tried to eat his aron and wouldn't let go of it, forcing him to carry them both back crying to his parents to get help. A few years after that, he got his training license, and set out to try his hand at the gym challenge. He wasn't able to make it past Kabu, unfortunately, and so he gave up to focus on school and learning instead. He caught a Nidoran during this time, and that formed his team for the challenge.

I honestly don't see why people are saying to change your original idea, I like the idea of a more seasoned pokemon trainer being the protagonist. I don't see what the need to build a team for scratch in the story. Unless you're specifically doing a power fantasy thing about starting out weak then its perfectly natural for somebody of Paxton's age to have 3 fully evolved pokemon. I like your idea of him already having experience to explain why he's competent at battling. Might just be personal tastes but I feel like pokemon trainers are more interesting once they've gotten some experience. A rookie trainer is going to be boring unless you specifically are making a story about a rookie trainer and intend to make it interesting somehow. If the story isn't about being a rookie then it just feels like needless busy work to get to the meat of the story.

This is literally me being my autistic self, so no worries, but I’ll try to explain my thought process.Garchomp will hard stomp the whole way up the ladder until rank D and above. It’s basically a cheat code even if it gives no fucks except for meaningful competition. If you haven’t read Borne of Caution, I’ll just say that when you have OP protag Pokémon, every battle you’re trying to make compelling will be such a fucking nightmare to do in order to make it debatable whether the MC will win that you’ll likely lose motivation to do so (like Fuggman himself has).How I’d do it (which I will re-iterate, you don’t have to, this is just my autistic idea for your story which shouldn’t hold too much weight) is I’d have Gabite and Lairon, but Nidoking got evolved too early so it didn’t learn whatever “necessary skills” it needed as a Nidorino, so it still needs a lot of development. Possibly even have the MC be psyched out by Fire Type specialists, so these would be easy rival characters (or eventual love interests). Take everything I say with a grain of salt tho anon, it’s your story.

For my WIP, I tossed a lot of suggestions into this thread, some good, some bad, and if the feedback wasn’t well thought out enough for me, I’d disregard it. Some anons will at least catch some of your vision, or at least see what you’re going for and will provide GOAT feedback, but not all of us are those anons. It’s up to you to decide what’s best for your story at the end of the day. Which is most of the fun of writing, isn’t it?
