Tears Of Princes Edition

>I want to learn the game, where do I begin?
Download PTCGL at https://tcg.pokemon.com/en-us/tcgl
The game has a quick tutorial and a bunch of decent decks to get you started against other beginners or against the AI. Some of those decks are very close to meta too. You can also go to your local game store and see if people are playing Pokémon.

>I know how to play, how do I make my own deck?
You have a decent beginner's guide at https://www.justinbasil.com/guide
There's also the old /tcg/ guide at https://imgur.com/a/W4NkOu6
After that, look up meta decks and try to reverse engineer them to see how things work.

>Where to find meta decks?
For big irl events, go to https://limitlesstcg.com/decks
For online events, go to https://play.limitlesstcg.com/decks?game=PTCG
For japanese events, go to https://pokecabook.com/archives/1417

Still obsessively tweaking this deck. Trying out Wally to see if I like it while preparing for life after Turo rotates and also trying out 3 Solrock since I feel like I've started Lunatone way too often and mulliganed more than I would like in a few of the tournament rounds. I also got Gravity Mountain recently and that would make it easier to knock out Dragapult EX and Charizard EX (and X)

Iron bundle, iono, arven, artisan also go btw
>>
>>58736965
I will miss Iron Bundle, but every other card that's being rotated from my deck is stuff that pretty much every one else uses too so it's kind of even. They have reprinted Judge though which can work as a stopgap for Iono, Petrel can do the same for Arven sort of as well. Counter Cancer can fuck off though and I hope they never reprint that again.
>>
>>58737022
Counter catcher should've been 2 prize difference. 1 prize is too abusable when you can just throw a babymon who item locks for them to kill, or kill your own dusclops if your opponent wont react.
>Want to play around budew item lock
>Alright ill kill it
>Actually unfair stamps + counter catches you + supporter for turn before you get to play items again
It was never used for comebacks the intended way
>>
>>58736965
no way in HECK is super rod going away
>>
>>58737107
Super Rod and Exp Share is practically a guaranteed reprint. I think there's a good chance they'll reprint Superior Energy Retrieval as well to try and give the mega Charizards a fighting chance since they have to discard a bunch of energy as well.
>>
What's the point of having rotation blocks if they're just gonna reprint 90% of SV anyway?

They're pretty evergreen yeah but so far haven't been updated to tick them off. The first proper J regulation set will bring a lot of common evergreen reprints / new staples like pokepad
>>58737114
>Superior Energy Retrieval
This only appeared in plasma era of BW, until the reprint recently. It's not a common card to get reprinted, it seemed intentional for chien pao/bax to mirror the old blastoise raindance BW era using it. Zard has energy recycler and fire breather which guarantee you enough energy to ohko anything, so I find it doubtful superior energy retrieval will get reprinted.

Meta is usually pokemon causing it, look like gardy. All it's trainers are just generic staples in every other deck. It's the pokemon causing it to dominate. Rotation gets to remove those pokemon for something else to take over.
Sometimes its nice to have trainers/items rotate like it was gonna be fun with minimal gust until they reprinted boss.. but the main thing is to purge all the old op pokemon that have gathered 3 years worth of support around them
>>
>>58736965
>tons of annoying cards gone
Good. Hopefully the meta is way better once rotation hits.
>>
>>58737157
Yes, Charizard can spend 4 energy to knock out a big, bad pokemon like a Dragapult (which will probably be 50% of the post rotation meta) but what happens after that? Unless you have a million energy in your deck you'd need to get it back somehow. It wouldn't make much sense now that they're in the habit of printing decent Charizard cards to just leave two mega Charizards hanging like that. There's also yet another Inferno Fandango Emboar which might mean they could make similar decks that don't revolve around the megas, though I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Charizard could use Powerglass though...

But if you had both S. Energy Retrieval and Energy Recycler/Fire Breather what would you pick? The answer is pretty obvious, that's why I think it'll be reprinted.
>>
>>58737022
noh noh you don't understand
counter catcher is a "punish" card
you know "punishing" uhh...knocking out pokemon and taking prizes? isn't that the point of the game?
>>
>>58737348
You're not understanding the point of rotation and reprints anon. Obviously SER is better but the fact zard released with fire breather heavily implies they're intending this going forward. Otherwise it would've reprinted SER in the zard set too
Rotation as a whole is meant to reduce the power level of everything, otherwise whats the point if they reprint all the same support for dragapult/chairzard/kanga/terapagos/any other surviving standard pokemon
>>
meanwhile boss' orders and N get reprinted every 17 seconds because people would apparently break down into hysterics and stop buying packs (that's the bad part) if they had to play without them at any point
>>
>>58737472
Most tcg people were happy boss was planned to rotate tho?
Tcg players dont buy packs as is, it's all collector fags and they sell off the "junk" regular cards for cents because they're not full art CHARIZARDO

They'll probably reprint fisherman. It's been two years since they printed Lana so there won't be too much overlap.
Or they could try to force Klara on us again.
>>
New to this and not really liking it too much. The game feels like it plays like Yugioh with how your opponent plays 10+ cards a turn. A lot of the game seems like it comes down to what you draw and that's why most decks have you going through your whole deck constantly drawing cards. Is Magic any better than this?
>>
>>58737826
>But most decks can still just play night stretcher if they need any recovery.
That's why I think it'll remain a ash/recycler/(and probably super rod reprint) format. Night stretcher is already too strong for getting discard to hand, and a lot of the new cards want energy in the deck instead of discard
>>58737839
Lana is still in format so there's little reason to reprint fisherman anytime soon. Max rod exists too. We have a lot of item cycle into deck support as mentioned above too
>>
>>58737881
The game just isn't in a very good state right now.
Most matches are decided at setup and if you hated statchecks in yugioh you'll hate them even more here.
MtG has more player interaction but it's got its own share of problems currently.
>>
>>58737881
Magic is more about gathering resources to do stuff. You don't blitz your deck like yugioh/pokemon but you still combo chain stuff with said resources so it snowballs.
There's not much tutoring so if you don't draw what you need early you can just get ran over as its too late for you to set up. Like yugioh there's interaction during your opponents turn while pokemon is afk until they're done
It's also like hearthstone in a sense where there's a lot of token summons, your card now spawned a 1/1 token which you have to put into play from a separate token pile on the side which can be annoying irl since it's not automatic like hearthstone. There's no tokens in pokemon, it's purely your deck only and not many in yugioh

I finally realized why this carbink exists. It can ohko mega lucario in the mirror if the deck is popular at all post-rotation.
>>
>>58739649
You need it on field while attacking with lucairos 1st attack the turn prior, making it incredibly obvious what you're planning. That's why energy acceleration attacks are never really meta, if gives your opponent the first action on who you accelerated to
>>
>>58736747
BTFO
>>
>>58739676
>That's why energy acceleration attacks are never really meta
Maybe if you ignore the very long list of decks that has TM: Turbo Energize, including the 2024 Worlds win. Energy acceleration is always good. Though I'm not sure that Carbink is going to be good, could be a funny meme though if fighting decks see a resurgence after Gardevoir rotates.
>>
>>58740056
All the decks before crispin... yeah.. especially the winning deck which just had 4 of the same pokemon.. totally the norm alright
The game has been too unfair to rely on energy acceleration abilities like that for a while. When everyone else can cheat out and dump 5+ energy in a turn through abilities/trainers/items why are you spending your turn putting 1-2 into place as an effect of your attack for turn
>>
>>58740578
And yes even joltik box was a meme. The fact that a 1 prizer putting 4 energy into play isn't competitive just shows you how meaningless energy acceleration attacks are. Half the time you just got your iron hands boss'd making you joltik again
>>
>>58740578
Scroll through the Limitless on the card and I think you'll find that better players than you would disagree. Las Vegas and Brisbane regionals win just last month too by the way.

What does a pokemon TCG match represent?
Like in magic it's a duel between planeswalkers.

The most obvious answer is that it's a pokemon battle.
But then a lot of things don't make sense.
Why do pokemon evolve in the middle of battle?
Why are you using dozens of items at the same time?
Why do you have a bunch of supporters assisting you constantly throughout the battle?

No, it seems the match is meant to represent a pokemon journey, and the opponent is your rival.
In this journey you catch pokemon, evolve them, and meet people (supporters) who help you, but only one per anime episode.

Pokemon anime has evolutions mid battle. but yeah not so much about items/trainers.
It not being a duel between planeswalkers/summoners/adventurers etc is probably a good thing because it allows them to print concepts more freely like supporters. Otherwise you're shoehorned into a design space

Why is this game so glitchy? I've had 4 games in the past 3 days that I've lost due to some random glitch happening like my Pokemon doing no damage or the screen being stuck on an opponents card.

I do think Petrel will be good once Arven rotates, couldn't hurt to have a few of them in the collection just in case. And you can never have enough Lillies
>>
>>58752043
What's petrel fetching over other supporters tho? We have colress/dawn/brock/hilda, and other cope options like drayton and hassel.
The only things you can't reliable fetch are items(not pokemon search related) and tools. Counter catchers gone, vessel too. Only rare candy is a worthwhile pick off it if you don't have 2 turns from dawn. Tools I'm pretty sure wont be included in lists anymore, or if they are is just because they run secret box to also grab it. You're never petrel-ing for a mochi
>>
>>58752118
I think finding trainers is a valuable enough effect to add consistency, that's why people play Arven. Some tools like Air Balloon is I think too good not to be included in a lot of decks (Though you could Petrel for a Switch too I guess), ace specs like Secret Box is also nice to have on demand and with Petrel you can have that even after Arven rotates. Maybe it'll just be a temporary stopgap card like Judge before they print the next hand disruption supporter, maybe Petrel will find a home in most decks to add some consistency or maybe I'm wrong and every deck will have 50 Noctowls in them post-rotation to help find the trainers.
>>
>>58752227
Arven feels fairly weak unless you have a bunch of good tools to grab along with it. I did forget air balloon before. Pokegear's still around to dig for supporters, and with squawk rotating I can see them adding a lumineon/tapu lele again considering how impactful dawn/brock/hilda/cyrano are for setting up.
but mostly it depends how big item/retreat lock is post rotation. You can't rely on pokegear to bail you out then, petrel would let you set up and balloon or switch to get out of being stuck, since with no penny/turo around decks are gonna have to run regular switch going forward. like it looks like a lot of targets for petrel but you can't find them without the memerockets card, so you'd have to commit to a lot of them in the deck, more than arvens were but then they became deadweights when you want proper supports...
