A thread for the creation and discussion of fan fiction and other fanworks - anything that involves a story and/or reading. What've you been reading? What've you been writing? What would you like to see more of?>Thread question:What's the most dogshit ending you've ever read? What fic made you wish that it stayed incomplete?>Previous thread:>>59025616
>>59045617>TQThere are fics that actually end?
>>59045617Fanfictions have endings?More seriously I don't have an answer to this, most of the ones I get into just don't have endings. So of the recent books I've read it'd have to be Henry James' the American. One part Gothic, one part romance, one part realism, and too early to be modernist. The novel just sorts of ends anticlimatically, that would have been fine if it was more realistic, but the Gothic third act really clashes with it. It made the protagonist kind of a wet blanket as well, and not in a tortured, educated, fun, hypocritical way like Newman Archer from the Age of Innocence.More more seriously, I hate the ending to everything I've written.
>>59045617>What's the most dogshit ending you've ever read? What fic made you wish that it stayed incomplete? There was this Kalos fic that had the MC use a fleet of flying battleships that AZ apparently made and hid under Kalos. It was one of the first fanfics I ever read but all I remember was being confused and wondering if all fanfics threw shit at the wall like this.Story was called Kalos : A Senseless Self Insert Story
>>59045617Of the few I’ve read that have endings, one where the MC fucking loses the League off-screen and has an entirely unsatisfactory discussion with Oak about his isekai grandfather. And then it ends right when it dives into more interesting stuff.
>>59045617not a fanfic but call of the night, finished reading it about a year ago and still think about then get upset about the ending occasionally if you were asking for specifically fanfic, I can't actually think of a pokemon fic that's been completed, that I finished, and that I disliked enough to remember>>59045737I think his other stuff is better but it's all similarly 'hands-off' with describing things and going into detail on events, his other pokemon fic which may or may not be dead is mostly worldbuildinginteresting worldbuilding, albeit
>Most dogshit ending"I Became A Vulpix's" ending shot my dog and shat in my breakfast cereal. Of all the works on heaven and earth that were completed, it should not have been that one. Rushed, unsatisfactory, raises more questions than it answers, and is the shit cherry on top of an already shit sundae.I've since been inspired to try writing my own attempt at it, but it's largely in the concept stage at the moment.
>>59046075Be sure to post about it when you do, I love that sort of thing
So it's established that Arceus manifests as Avatars. Do Dialga & Palkia do the same, I wonder, or are the ones we see them at their full potential?
>>59046075>writing revenge fanfanficUltra based, you have my curiosity
>>59046134The answer is whatever you want because Gamefreak hasn't made anything about them undeniably canon and they haven't had enough canon appearances for reasonable conclusions to be made.
Will we see more space fics because of Pokopia lore?
>>59046613Pokemon star wars with aura powers
>>59045843>SI grandfatherWhat was the fic about? I've rarely heard of an MC being descended from an isekaijin instead of being one.
>>59046134The Sinjoh Ruins event lead me to conclude that each universe has its own Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina, and then Legends Arceus obviously shows that Arceus has some higher-dimensional self.So no, the Creation Trio don't use avatars, that's just them.
>>59043274I'm within a few chapters now of introducing a character that I'm pretty confident will be my most controversial one, that I discussed on here a couple years back before I started writing proper. The general vibe I got on responses was that if executed well she could be pretty great, but there's a high chance of her being perceived as a Sue, so I'm gonna have to wait and see what people think of her.
>>59046776Grandson of the isekai guy gets a super special notebook that contains meta knowledge of pokemon. They use this to become a better trainer and travel Johto while collecting Ghost-types. Features a somewhat mentor-ish Morty and an incredibly botched (imo) time-travel subplot. It’s Ghost Specialist
>>59047103I remember bits and pieces of this conversation (at least I think). Now I need to remember what I thought of it >_>
>>59047472>>59047103 I don't think it's Po town's isekaijin girl. So are you two going to edge us or explain?
>>59047481It was this character >>56354440Basically, she's a super-strong fighter who likes to battle alongside her Pokemon that gets along very poorly with the MC and has an arc about needing to learn to rely on her Pokemon and not trying to do everything for them. Be warned reading that even with plot revisions over the years it may include some spoilers for In Mine Own
>>59047506There's one thing you should always remember here, anon.We may criticize you and everything you write and call it shit. But that's because it here, not gonna say this place is a gem, but the people here are still at least one centimeter above the rabble. All the criticism we gave you because she's a retard genki who's somehow strong enough to fight Pokemon? The average reader will slurp it up. They will jerk themselves over le heckin' tomboyerino and how they wish she was their waifu and how OP she is and how hard she's fulfilling their power fantasies. So, you shouldn't ignore us, but you should ignore us.
>>59047481And this >>59047472 is me, Pofag. I’m kinda surprised I’ve had readers want to see Suzy-Marie again, which we will, but not for a while longer.
>>59047612Yes, but she also conflicts with the protagonist, which by the virtue or protagonist centered morality means she's pure evil.I find it funny how IMO, PoPT, and now mean all have a tomboyish female character who's strong but causes conflict with the MC. Although Clair isn't the short-haired type of tomboy and is a bit of an oujou as well.>>59047657Because she has protagonist energy, duh. Readers love that shit. Besides a male reader base is more likely to forgive a female character being stupid than a male one and vice versa. Although that's based entirely off of my inferences since I haven't read PoPT past chapter 6. I'll get around to it after IMO, promise. Although typically if you son't call attention to characters being stupid some readers won't notice. She'd have to be Mary-sioux frm youki senkai tier to be hated, i.e getting her allies killed for the sake of her personal justice.
>>59047506>has an arc about needing to learn to rely on her Pokemon and not trying to do everything for themI wonder how badly she's going to get her ass kicked to start this.Would be funny to see her smacking around low level Pokemon with ease, taking injuries but having them healed quickly by a healing Pokemon. Only for the time she needs help she doesn't have her healer. Or fuck, maybe she loses her healer all together. I could see Kuzey telling her not to in without her healer and this fighter girl goes in to just to prove him wrong...>>59047669>Because she has protagonist energy,I had multiple readers say that Ian had "protagonist energy" during the Sinclair fight and now I'm going to have to actually look up what they mean by it, cuz I assume it's more than just "this is the protagonist doing stuff." I like to think I at least made Ian earn this narrative "protagonist energy" after all of the shit he's been through.
>>59047687Some advice: the most protagonist energy thing you could have him do is impregnate hyde.
>>59047702Dammit, you spoiled my whole arc idea where a fem-Hyde (Heidi) emerges in an Ultra Storm from a universe where she fell in love with fem-Ian and has to battle feelings of her falling in love with Ian Guess I'll just have to pivot to Lillie. And "protagonist energy" is just main character energy? Lame. I find I need to humble my protags before they can become the heroes they were meant to be, but maybe I should have them start with that energy, lose it, then get it back. Would probably have stopped the "humiliation ritual" stigma around PoPT. Who am I kidding, that will never be shaken
>>59047718>where a fem-Hyde (Heidi) emerges in an Ultra Storm from a universe where she fell in love with fem-Ian and has to battle feelings of her falling in love with Ian Guess I'll just have to pivot to Lillie.Do both.
>>59045617One thing that fanfics usually never get right is the Pokémon synergy within society. Trainers only use their Pokémon for battles, when they're supposed to be all over the world helping others with their work or just being actual friends with humans. This official short really does a great job of what I mean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXN6qkYcDzA
>>59047718I don't think there's any serious stigma against PoPT being a humiliation ritual. At least every time I've said it, it's been in jest.
>>59047744It's hard to go about that stuff on text. It's easy to show it on animation because it happens in the background. You cannot be describing everything on the background as the focus characters are doing thing. It's just not how text works. It's not like official works are good with that either too. That there has to be a dedicated SoL short like that to show it happening speaks volumes.
>>59047777>QuadsMust be true then. Plus the aspects that likely drew the accusations are over at this point since Ian's well incorporated into Team Skull and has some legitimate feats that can't be dismissed.Although I remember talking about a story idea I scrapped a while back, and it started with some shit happening to the protag and I remember one anon dropped: "And I thought Pofag was into humiliation but this is crazy" or something to that effect. I think it must be my incessant need to make my protags earn it so they're humble before they get all of "the power."
>>59047813>You cannot be describing everything on the backgroundI mean, you can, being pedantic is another issue
>>59047813it doesn't have to be in the background, just have characters interacting with at least one of their Pokemon outside battles like friends or something, even a shouldermon it's enough
>>59047832NTA you're replying to, but writing scenes with 5+ named characters in them is hard, adding Pokemon to scenes like that, while not impossible, compounds the difficulty. Although I will say I 100% agree that Pokemon would be involved in a household/family like >>59047744 says. But it's like nicknames for Pokemon in fanfics, they obviously would be a thing (we don't call dogs "Dog" or "Pomeranian"), but the writing medium makes it nigh impossible to do well if you're going to have a large cast of characters.>>59047850This is something I need to get better at. Especially if it's scenes just between two characters. I usually get caught up in making the dialogue snappy and flow well to focus on anything else.
>>59047506As the resident “the strongest human should be weaker than the weakest Pokemon” schizo, you’ve done a good job of making the Pokemon feel like real characters so far and I trust you not to make them irrelevant with this development. I think you’ll be fine.
>>59047946>the strongest human should be weaker than the weakest PokemonI will never get this, what would a Wimpod do to me?
>>59047826It's only because of chapter 1 pofag, that's the entire reason.
>>59047612Thanks for the advice, of a sort, anon. But I don't intend for her to just be there as a genki crowd appeal stereotype, she's there for a reason central to my fic's themeing, same as the rest of my main cast, so I'm hoping I can say something with her that's stronger than that.>>59047687>Would be funny to see her smacking around low level Pokemon with ease, taking injuries but having them healed quickly by a healing Pokemon. Only for the time she needs help she doesn't have her healer.I'm hoping it'll make more sense once you meet her, but it's less an overinflated ego that makes her abrasive like this, and more that she has a deeply ingrained sense of responsibility, that this is just the only way to do things that she's comfortable with.>>59047744This is something I'm constantly trying to double-check on myself so I can keep the atmosphere right. When people are working I try to have Pokemon doing their jobs with them, and they have a big space in decoration and aesthetics the way animals do in the real world. >>59047946I appreciate the vote of confidence anon, I'll try to live up to it.
>>59047996I’m exaggerating my opinion for comedic effect. If a regular human can kick a Happiny’s ass it’s fine, what I actually don’t like is the main trainer regularly stealing the spotlight from the cool monsters in the cool monster fighting franchise. Ash going Super Saiyan bad, some wisened old martial artist who can hold his own against some Pokemon good.
>>59048223What about a human defeating a Pokémon for comedic effect?
>>59048277Not that guy, but I think comedy makes a lot of things more acceptable since it’s clearly not meant to be taken seriously.
>>59048277Gags are obviously fine.
What makes a good flashback?
>>59048549if it's short
>>59048549Weird question. The same thing that makes any other part of a story good.
>>59048549If Vi's in it.
>>59046613I may see more slice of life stories featuring the monsters themselves. It does took place in a familiar setting and you don't have to worry too much about battles and dungeons.
>>59046134Kinda?On one hand, it's established that Cyrus' goal was to use the manifestation of Space and/or Time to reshape the universe, and shit doesn't really happened to the Distortion World when you captured/defeat Giratina. On the other hand, it's well known that Pokémon (especially captive ones) often limits themselves to prevent collateral damage to their environment.Ultimately, it depends on you and how you wanted to tell your story.
>>59047744This is basically the focus of the fic I'm writing. Protagonist hates pokemon battles but enjoys cooking. Takes a holiday from work to travel Paldea and ends up talking to a bunch of people with different jobs/relationships with their pokemon from the usual trainer ones. I'm committing to the bit so hard that the only fight scenes I've written so far are humans fighting pokemon.
>>59045617Not a Fanfic, but the ending of the movie was such a fucking complete 180 in tone that it pissed me the fuck off. It's a comedy, and I can respect the 'fuck it' attitude. But it was a dramatic comedy that ended with a hyper cartoony gag that completely abandoned any form of possible closure on the story.
>>59048810*the movie Big Man Japan.
>>59048549It should start off the chapter after a huge cliffhanger and it needs to drag on and on about some bullshit side character's melodrama
>>59048994>Shugorei
>>59048277Everything is legal if the bit is good
>>59048768Published or no? Sounds amusing. Serious human vs pokemon battles or more played for comedy?
what do you think about the transparent Pokeballs from the manga?
Where's the best place to post Pokemon PORN fanfics?AO3 is kind of alien to me, but I'll use it if it will get me readers.Stuff like fanfic.net is impressive what you can get away with posting (literally no one EVER reports you there) but those sites are also dead as fuck
>>59049066Ao3 by my reckoning.
>>59045617How would you do a character with toonforce (pokemon or human) in the Pokémon world? The anime has it's gags but they're almost never taken seriously and don't tend to show up in serious situations. How might one achieve such a power?
>>59049057I like them a lot.
>>59049054Not yet published. I was the guy asking about how much one should have written before publishing a thread or two ago. Played for comedy initially with a supporting character, but might be a key component of the MC's character arc later.
>>59049150By using gag aura, of course
>>59049150A Mew abusing the fuck out of Transform is the only possible way I can see it happening "realistically".There's not much in Pokemon that would allow for something like that.
>>59049150By mastering metronome aura you can learn to call upon the power of random bullshit
I'm thinking of writing a parody self insert character who's entire gimmick is repeatedly revealing abilities and knowledge from their past life, except the things they claim to know or did are completely unrealistic and definitely not anything the 'writer' actually did.>fighting types eh? well I did MMA is my past life and did some competitions to>electric problems? reminds me of the time rewired my entire house off the grid with solar power>building on fire? I was a volunteer fireman for some time even though I never pulled anyone out of a fire I have the training>porygon? Of course of a programmer. Joe Biden told me to learn to code after my job at the coal mine disappeared>injuries? I was a trained battlefield surgeon for a few years before I decided it wasn't for me.>music? Of course I play every instrument. They're basically all the same once you get a feeling for it>hostage situation? Reminds me of the time I robbed a casino with my friends on christmas.>special pokemon diet? I once made my own diet and workout plan, so I basically know everything about the body and its needs. It should start reasonable and become increasingly unreasonable
>>59049459Sounds like a character that would appear in a konosuba-like isekai series as a character to antagonize the kazuma-analogue.In other words, I like it.
>>59049459Sounds like a fun one for a comedy. I had a vaguely similar idea once where a meek, klutzy, but well-meaning isekaijin SI comes to the Pokemon world, and seems to be extremely lucky. He's always at exactly the right place and time to avoid being harmed or stop something bad from happening, and as he dripfeeds more and more details about himself to his new friends, the reader starts catching on that he's literally Superman
Ah, finished with the content of chapter 2! Now I just have to finish with chapter three, then do a final read through of all three chapters to make sure I didn't make any mistakes. I'm a bit tired and I tend to make obvious mistakes like using the wrong tense, or calling pokemon 'it,' but I'll fix that in my final editing pass. Also I realized the convergent Pallosand form also works as a Convergant Tinkaton, neat. https://rentry.org/Mahogany16Also! Hey, Pokenormal Anon, do you have any plans to reference Ingrained May? Or any pokemon creepypastas that come from later gens/other regions.
>>59049604Pokeracists call this not sapient btw.
>>59049459... Will you name him Keith?
How do you writebros deal with burnout? Working on side projects? Self-flagellation? Porn?
>>59049844Everything you said except self-flagellation.
>>59049844By completely running away from writing for months on endBut a better idea could be to take some time to read, or just find something else to do. The only cure for burnout is time away.
>>59049844Dopamine from reader interaction always helps overcome that a bit. What really does it for me is I'll start really thinking on the (hopefully) epic moments I haven't gotten to yet, the devastating revelations and the euphoric triumphs. This usually kicks my ass into gear after torturing myself with them for long enough.
>>59045617https://archiveofourown.org/works/81042021/chapters/212955101New chapter of In Mine Own (kinda-sorta!) is up! This is a separate fic where I'll be posting all the NSFW chapters. To keep the main fic a complete story on its own these will all be supplementary content, either side chapters or effectively expounding on what happens when two characters kiss and things fade to black. This first chapter follows Emma and Serena and is yuri-focused content, in case that's something you wish to avoid: you have been warned.
Question for all - do you feel that, in the context of past or fantasy-ish settings, using Pokeballs, even if reflavoured like PLA did, ruins things?
>>59049927No, that's probably the easiest retcon I could agree with in a fanfic. So long as they're still made with apricorns or there's life energy involved somewhere then it's perfectly good.
>>59049927Depends about how far in the past. If you can explain their usage with "magic" or whatever, yeah. Some sort of magic/alchemy is clearly going on in the Pokemon world that AZ knew about. If you're simply asking about using Poke Balls in an ancient setting, I'd say as long as you use Tumblestones and Apricorns for them, only the most anal autists would gripe.>>59049857Specific tags are the best tags, IMOanon.
>>59049927No? Why would it?At the same time I wouldn't mind if there weren't any.
>>59049174I know this was most likely made before the fairy type existed, but fairy types do seem like the most likely candidates to use toon force. Tinkaton is literally a little cartoon blob that bonks things on the head with a giant hammer
Late night writing is so comfy, threadbros.
>>59049844I don't know. I guess just taking a break?>>59050201Yeah, but then I have a tendency to overdo it and it's like five in the morning.
Is nobody in the Pokémon world concerned with fixing evolutions that negatively harm a Pokémon?
>>59050380They still haven't fixed Porygon-Z, who suffers actual strokes
>>59050380If everyone can agree Slugma isn't really as hot as the sun then we can also agree that Parasect isn't really zombified by the fungi.
>>59050385The fix for Porygon-Z is not loading a disk with a virus onto your Porygon2.
>>59050407all dubious disks have virus
>>59050425Exactly, if you load a dubious disc onto your Porygon2 you should know what's coming.
>>59050380The parasitic Mushroom is the reason why Paras can defend itself with debilitating spores; It'd just be defenseless Zubat food otherwise. I wonder if it'd even be able to evolve otherwise, Parasect barely changes physically so it might just be the Parasite keeping the host body growing past shelf life. If you look at the scrapped Paraspore Evo it looks like the line was initially meant to be Symbiotic with the Paras relying on the Mushrooms to guard their young.
