It follows a pattern where Misty will get really mad at something and becomes a bitch towards most characters but primarily Ash who takes it like an abused spouse. Then they have a moment where they make up, have sex and repeat the cycle. The fic has Leaf in it who is Ash’s childhood friend and becomes a coordinator. Ash has a crush on her at first but she starts dating Gary for a while and then Richie. During her last appearance she talks to Ash after breaking up with Richie and says she’s jealous of the relationship Misty and Ash have and wishes hers could be like that. I guess some people’s ideal relationship is being a verbal punching bag.

So the red herrings are something the characters dealing with in universe.

Griselle seems pretty easy, trying to get away from the stigma of Team Flare. Heck, you could habe Mable or any of the other Team Flare scientists hiding out secretly in a different region.
