i was around for when we did this for quarantine dex crystal and my main contribution was adding a disclaimer at the top saying some shit like “warning: the devs think the best way to experience the game is blind, and they may be right, but do whatever you want” or whatever. no big deal if you dont wanna add that but its just my suggestion

You know what, a chullo hat (or a trapper hat) would ACTUALLY lend itself to the whole "Design partially based on the -vish part of the Galar fossils" thing, maybe have him be blonde like -zolt underneath if I decide to go that path. Right now he has two sets of glasses because my friend thought it'd be funny. I believe me mentioning -zolt and -vish should tip you on the design elements (colour-wise at least) of the female option.

He wears a scarf meant to emulate Dracozolt's incomplete lightning bolt-shaped wings. In previous rough doodles I used that element for lightning bolt twintails for a potential female option.

Maybe I'll share some scrapped stuff. I would've called the left one "Hedwig" if she went through. I could picture myself reworking the design but retaining the hair and cheeks. As you can see I never bothered rough-sketching shoes. I am bad at shoes so I'll probably go watch a tutorial or something when I do it for real.

>>
>>59698194
have to say, as someone making a fairly unambitious vanilla-like hack, the lukewarm reception to Monomyth makes me worry there isn't a place for hacks like mine and the only way to stand out these days is go really big and bold. I just wanted to make an original region that's fun to explore and capture the feeling of games like RSE. but I don't have full tileset conversions, or flashy character art, or fakemon, or gimmicks. making a whole region has already been a huge undertaking for me. but if a game like Monomyth can barely make a splash with all that stuff, what chance do I have.

I'm still gonna push through and finish it. I don't care about being a hugely popular hack. but I'm not gonna lie, it is a little discouraging. feels like the bar is really high these days.
>>
>>59698476

>>59698485
Fuck, time to train a Fire type
>>
>>59698480
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised (but also unsurprised) at the amount of criticism the game is getting

Anons, what do you expect out of a new-region hack that Monomyth doesn't have?
>>
>>59698480
Fakemons are contentious in the first place, a fakemon hack lives or dies off of its designs and Monomyth's designs are a mixed bag trending towards below average. I wouldn't really say a fakemon mega-hack is comparable to a vanilla-adjacent hack outside of being within the Pokemon framework.
The region design seems to be the most consistently praised part of the hack, aside from minor complaints about the routes being on the long side, which in the grand scheme of something of Monomyth's size is small potatoes. Just focusing on designing a fun region to explore without needing to split your attention between designing levels and designing mons is an automatic leg up on fakemon hacks. Give people familiarity and they'll take to it, replace familiarity and you'd better hope your designs tick the right boxes for the right people.
>>
>>59698501
i think devs being anti documentation and sharing info and telling people not to use speed up, poisoned the well so to speak about how people feel about monomyth as a romhack

Pokemon romhacks have been around for over 20 years. They were novelties and most people didn't know about them besides maybe some stories of bootlegs. Now anyone can make one and people are making personal reproduction carts of their favorite games. With the demise of a lot of smaller community corners in favor of Reddit/Twitter/Discord plus Youtubers who do nothing but make overview videos hyping up everything that comes out, it's easy to keep tabs on most every project. You're getting spic/chink/nip hacks translated these days too.
If you want to make a splash you either appeal to the type of stuff a lot of people praise in other hacks and try to go above and beyond in comparison, or you have your own distinct vision and make that. Otherwise you will be drowned out. Old hacks are still fun even without a dozen extra features stapled to them though, so it's not like you need a lot of bells and whistles, but people will be like "why didn't you do X" about everything if one other hack did it.

>>59698556
You get the TM for Pay Day very very early (prior to the first gym I believe) and it seems to give $5 pokedollars per level per use of the attack, so spamming that on low level wild encounters to grind money honestly isn't too bad. At level 30, I was getting $150 per use of Pay Day that I used in battle, and it stacks, so it's not too hard to get a decent chunk of money, especially if you use speed ups. It got the money I needed for the casino to exchange for casino coins to buy me the leaf stone I needed for one of my dudes within maybe 10 minutes, if that.

I'm up to the cult base in Ghost Grey- is there a compelling reason to evolve Doublade? It seems like Aegislash is just bad in this game with lack of King's Shield, losing access to Eviolite, and only getting Sturdy as a consolation prize. And I'm not sure anyone else is really itching for the Eviolite on top of that.

>>
>>59698501
The only real criticism I've seen is people not liking how tight money is in the beginning and the usual fakemon debates which are both matter of taste things. Everything else is just whining about lack of docs and that a game with way more QOL than base emerald doesn't have enough QOL which are both pretty stupid.

Seems like the people who are actually playing it are mostly liking it and the stink is just coming from people who refuse to play it on principal. I don't have many complaints myself besides some of the fakemon really not matching the quality of the rest of them.

its pretentious that they want you to experience a game blind? where exactly does this fucking retarded mentality come from that games should come with all information the exact same day they come out? do you think this for other video games?
>>
>>59698194
So far I'm at the 6th gym town.

Positives
>exp curve and trainer sets keep the game from being braindead while not being exceptionally difficult
>world, worldbuilding, and music are solid, and the earlier parts remind me of the best aspects of Hoenn
>fakemon are mostly good
>game actually rewards exploration and discovering things for yourself with NPC hints, feels more like an RPG than nu-mon
>the fact that there are fakemon and a fake region is inherently more effort than most romhacks are willing to put in and it's clear they wanted to put forth an actual adventure with progression instead of a glorified boss fest

Negatives
>dialogue too often becomes "wink wink nudge nudge" self aware ironic quirk chungus tier. not to the extent of Unbound's retarded weed gym but still way too self conscious and insecure in itself for a non-meme hack
>spritework quality on mons is all over the place, both realmons and fakemons. I can't tell what I'm looking at in some places
>region's main pacing is XY tier. there's a solid gap between the first two gyms, a smaller one between the second and third, and then the third through the sixth have been absurdly rapid fire. the northern part of the region has been mostly hallway routes separating gyms so far

you are a genuine retard
You going out of your way to use a multiplayer feature means whatever you discover through it counts as experiencing the game blind and is not a spoiler
It's not the same as the doc/guide trannies keeping a tab open on their second monitor with charts, EV yield values and whatnot at all times. And EVEN THEN it's not like this practice is new, see strategy guides that were sold at exorbitant prices back then.
You are stupid, just like the monomyth devs who have no respect for their players or community.
>we wont provide wikis or guides or walkthrough because we want players to experience our game organically
Based, fair and respectable decision
>but please oh god please don't make wikis players please please don't talk about our game please!!!
this is genuinely mouth breathing level retarded
it's like these people weren't alive when pokemon was actually popular and thriving
no faggot, your tranny circle will not prevent people from organically discussing strategies, sharing their experiences, writing up guides etc.
>but this is a super special romhack, you are not supposed to...
newsflash retard
once the game escapes the dev's hands, players decide what they can do with it. the player can be a retard it's his problem
the player decides to spend hours autistically pressing A in front of every tile in the starting city to find items and shares the info? his problem

This control freak philosophy is what I mean by the whole thing feels inorganic. It's like a game designed by people who have no respect or consideration for their target audience. To their credit, this is a free fangame made with a lot of effort and love so no one is forced to be subjected to the humiliation ritual; but it remains pretentious and insulting if you think beyond what's in front of your eyes. These devs are huffing their own farts and no matter the quality of the game (it's decent) it permeates their creation and negatively affects the experience

i'm gonna slop port the best of what i like to showdown so i can slop port it to cobblemon. like it's amazing what that free month of Sol does, i already got a good chunk of tectonic's mechanics in there
my general idea is porting tectonic mechanics, then using the slop machine to account for Hax Meters (look at the DH2 github for that one), slop my own tectonic into cobblemon with blackjack and hookers, namely with a bit more respect for evolution mechanics so you'll still have to raise friendship, go to certain locations in the open world, etc

>I don't like being spoiled on games before I play them
You guys know that looking at documentation is completely optional, right? If you don't want to be spoiled, just...don't spoil yourself.
>b-b-but other people will spoil it for me!
They're going to do that anyway. People have already made documentation for the game. These days all you're doing by not releasing documentation is stalling the release of that information by a few hours, making somebody else do the work for you, and giving up control over exactly what information is provided and how it's presented. It's just silly to expect a game to remain undocumented for any length of time nowadays. Hell, it's always been silly. Pokemon has had officially licensed and unofficial documentation available since literally Red/Blue. There has basically never been a time in the series history where you couldn't easily access that kind of information, except maybe the very early days of Red/Green's Japanese release I guess. If you want a blind experience you have to enforce that yourself, it's always been that way, for better or worse.

You need to get to the 1st gym, go to the post office and add someone's friend code who's repping that pokemon. That'll let you start getting hidden abilities. The /vp/ plays thread has some since they're playing it. I assume you'd have to breed a new watercat to get it though

I think making fakemon that look good and easy to understand is really hard on a gba screen. Official designs have high def artwork, appearances in anime and cards to flesh out their appearances on the side so even a bad sprite can work out ok.
If a game wants to do fakemon, they are better off doing it Odyssey style with regional variants exclusively
>>
Have any of you guys use AI when making your projects, but only as a tool and not a crutch?
>>
>>59698914
This is a fair point, I think a lot of fakemon designs would be easier to appreciate if they had artwork to go with them

Depends where you draw the line between tool and crutch. Some people will see any AI use as a crutch.
I'm using AI for most of my coding. But I'm not hands off, letting it run loose and design my game for me. I have meticulously designed every aspect of my game by hand, I'm just using AI to implement it. To me it's a tool, but others will see it as cheap. It's a matter of perspective.

when was this? were you just trying to use an AI chatbot, or an actual coding workspace? are you working in the decomp?

I've had no major issues using AI for romhack coding so far, it's been extremely efficient. but I'm working in Codex so I can plug it directly into the codebase. I don't know how useful just using a free chatbot would be for example. you do have use the right tools.

>>
>>59699010
Ah, in that case, no. That's the fun part of making a game to me, I don't want to outsource it. I use AI for coding, but I did all my worldbuilding, game design, etc by myself. And frankly, I wouldn't have much interest in playing a game that used AI for those creative aspects. I know some people lump all AI use together and would say my using it for code is no different, but that's just where I draw the line personally.

I'm not anti-AI by any means, I use it for a lot of stuff. I can definitely see the appeal of using it to brainstorm and bounce ideas off. But I'm making a romhack as a creative endeavor, for me doing that would kind of defeat the point. And I would question why you're making a hack at all if you can't even come up with your own ideas. That's just me though.

Long shot, but does anyone know the command to remove every item from the player's bag in essentials?

I know I can use "$bag.remove(:ITEM, NUMBER)" to remove a cretain number from the bag, but that's not good enough. I want to totally remove all potions from the bag, but the issue is that essentials is coded so that if the player has a stack of 999 potions, it will just give them another stack. IDK what the limit is, but it's over 100,000, and might be infinite. The player foreseeing this and sneaking even one potion (among other items) past this could break everything, so this needs to be flawless.

Either a remove all or nuking the whole bag (except for key items) would be acceptable.

>If a game wants to do fakemon, they are better off doing it Odyssey style with regional variants exclusively
Nah, fuck that. Regional variants are already some of the laziest designs in the entire franchise. I'd rather the reverse, and people just make full fakemon rather than relying on slipshod recolors for cheap familiarity and memberberry points.

Most of the Monomyth mons' sprites are really easy to interpret, and they aren't any more or less complex than the average gens 1-3 designs. It's more that there wasn't a lot of a quality control to the pixel art in general (for the areas and characters too), but it's more noticeable when it comes to the main draw of the game. Just look at the 2016 Clover sprites compared to the newer ones to see how great a difference sprite quality alone can make in reading a design.

This issue occurs with later gens of real pokemon being backported to sprites too. Gen 3 already has the most limited space of any generation to express a design, and tons of hacks try to cram later gen mons into those constraints which leads to things like Kyurem, Zamazenta, etc. looking like dogshit.
>>
>>59699205
Humm, maybe?
I'll try playing around with it. Worst case, I can remove 999,999 from the player's bag, and anyone who's willing to grind to have over a million of an item just to cheat might have earned that. I guess I should see how high that number goes, maybe I can remove 100 million or even a billion.
>>
>>59698194
First I'd like to know if its actually being poorly received outside of the fourchins. I don't personally think it failed to deliver.
I think any negativity its a mix of fangame players having unreal personal expectations, as well as letting their biases affect their judgment and the playerbase being spoiled by documentation thus far.

Because fangames are so ubiquitous by this point, almost everyone who regularly plays them is going to have their top fangame that is the gold standard, and unfortunately to some extent every subsequent game will be measured against. And for many people this gold standard game will have been something with more dev time, a bigger team, better qol/features, more time for polish and refining things. Every game will like fall short of this gold standard game in their eyes, even if its not realistic to compare every game to it logistically.

For the bias thing I think the team did a fair amount to 'villainize' themselves for lack of a better term. Putting the "don't use speed up" message and being stingy regarding documentation is already telling what I would say is some majority of players that they are 'playing your game wrong' and leaving a bad taste in their mouths as soon as they put it in.
But I also think its largely self inflicted problem. The fact so many players can't not use speed hacks and documentation to play a game is a community problem, these people have unironically forgotten or brainrotted themselves out of the ability to play a pokemon game "properly" after literal years of conditioning themselves around it.
I unironically know people who can't or won't play a game if they can't have the documentation on their other screen - where to get every pokemon, every trainer's team and movelist. This level of dependency on documentation is not normal, and transcends autism. Its your first playthrough, just play the game bro and have fun.

>>
>>59699258
Lookin good so far
>>
>>59699245
You definitely have a point about people being brainrotted and unable to play without documentation. But I would just point out that I don't think the problem is documentation existing, it's people's relationship to it. This series has always had documentation available. When I was a kid playing Red/Blue, I could easily look up almost any information I wanted. I didn't go and learn the game inside out before playing though. I played the game normally, allowed myself to discover things, and occasionally looked up info if I got stuck or just really wanted to know something. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. The problem isn't the fact that documentation exists, it's just that people have no self control with it.

But regardless, not putting out documentation isn't a solution to that. As we've seen in this thread, if you don't include documentation then people are just going to take it on themselves to make it, and with AI that's possible within hours. Monomyth had documentation within like 24 hours of release. It's simply not possible to contain anymore, unless nobody even gives a fuck about your hack enough to datamine it.
So I think what we've learned with this release is there is little point in trying to contain it, alienating large swathes of your audience, coming across as dicks, and punishing people who would use documentation sparingly - just to try and stop something that is, at this point, impossible to stop. You may as well just get in front of it and release docs. It might not align with your "vision", but at least that way you avoid controversy and having your reputation as devs dragged, and you get to retain some control over the information so people aren't resorting to using AI slopdocs.

It does suck that people are so addicted to convenience but one dev being stubborn about it isn't going to change anything, it just ends up harming them.

It's hard to describe, I don't hate the game in spite of thinking the devs being faggots over docs and such was retarded, and it is certainly one of the few romhacks I've actually enjoyed playing together with Clover, Rocket Edition, Ghost Grey and Peridot, but I dunno man.
The story is so weak and contrived it might as well not exist, the progression is a complete mess, I hate the vast majority of the fakemon due to them looking horrible or having terrible stats, movepools and nonsensical types.
Slizón being a good example, I actually like it, thought it was cute and wanted to use it, because it's movepool is abysmally shit, and it's essentially a weaker Emolga with a different type, it's signature ability doesn't make up for how shit it is.
Far too many fakemon evolve way too late and have dogshit BSTs in spite of that.
I wanted to use the waifumon since I thought it was interesting, but it's stuck to the tail end of the game and again, it's stats are not great, and it's abilities don't pair up well with it.
A lot of fakemon games tend to make the fakemon strong to make them appealing, it's the opposite case with Monomyth for the vast majority.
Exploration is good in terms of how good the map is, but actual rewards for exploration are nonexistent, there's practically nothing worthwhile. I spent an hour backtracking and combing through the map and I only got fucking vitamins, which I couldn't even sell due to how much lower their prices are in the game.
I got like 3 TMs for backtracking, and besides Hidden Power they are all absolutely worthless.
A genuinely good romhack and fangame is typically one I can see myself replaying eventually, I do often with Clover since I love it to death, but I haven't even finished Monomyth and I'm already kinda tired of the game in spite of appreciating a lot of the effort that went into it.
If I had to define my feelings in few words, it would be "presentation without substance".

Since this is a game dev place I thought I'd ask you all your opinion on something, since I'm using my own sprites based on the spritesheets of other games.

You know how for some games, you have front and back overworld sprites that face... well, front and back. >>
>>59699414
You know it's funny I never really cared about stuff like that, but while working on my own romhack I realize how deliberate it actually is. Stock sprites are pretty much all pale so you really have to go out of your way to make custom assets to include brown people in your game. My game is going to have almost no brown people simply because I can't be bothered to make sprites for them, I just don't care. Also when I am placing even unimportant NPCs, I am always consciously thinking about their place in the region; why are they there, what do they do, what's their relationship to this location and the other NPCs around. Now maybe not everyone puts that much thought into it, but I feel like if you are at all serious about worldbuilding you will consider that kind of thing at least briefly.

So yeah, I still don't think it's really that big of a deal, but you can't say these devs don't know what they're doing. If they truly didn't care, their game would have few to no brown NPCs, simply because that's the path of least resistance. Including diversity takes a conscious effort. Some would argue that's a good thing, but if so, then stand by that. I've seen too many people go like "ooh yeah, I didn't even like, think about that haha" and that's just bullshit.

For how much they want (You) to play the game blind they sure made some interesting decisions that really make it difficult/annoying.

I'm trying to give a lot of these custom mons a shot to see what they might turn into. If I like their design more after they evolve, a general sense for their typing, stat distribution, moves/role, etc to see if I want to run it. But I'm well into the 20's for levels now and almost everything I've caught has still not evolved yet. My starter (which still felt late, at 20) and the 3-stage early game bug are the only things that have evolved still across like 10 unique pokemon I've been leveling (and I have at least 20 more in the PC).

Like why does stuff evolve so fucking late?
This doesn't feel like I'm being rewarded for playing blind, it feels like I'm being punished for wanting to try lots of the new pokemon.
>>
>>59699878
yeah, its like that for a long time. There are some that evolve in the 20s, but a lot are in the thirties and I'm into the 40s and some are only evolving now (or still havent) into their third stages
I feel like the intent is to match the gym curve, as I'm coming up on the 5th gym now and I guess they want you to still have evos to look forward to later in the game, but it also means its hard to tell if something evolves by level but late, or if its waiting on a stone, or something more like metal coat etc.
On the plus side, its easy enough to have a core squad of 4 pokemon or so for real battling and keep two slots for rotating in things to evolve and check out

I generally disdain most of the Monomyth fakemon, but in spite of how ugly it looks, I really love Acolith.
Great mon overall, fun type, pretty reliable all the way through, only shame is that it's movepool kinda sucks ass.
It only learns a lot of the good moves it needs way too late.
Also what the fuck is it with the TM distribution in this game? You don't even have TMs for Flamethrower, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt.
Fucking hell man, they even nerfed the shit outta Surf, I'm so sick of balanceniggers sperging the fuck out over anything.
Clover was a way harder game and it still let the player have good TMs, often rewarding rare ones via exploration and other off the track means, Monomyth seethes at the very idea the player could get a good move on his Pokemon before level 40, it's fucking retarded.
There's so many gay kneejerk things in Monomyth that sincerely baffle me, this really feels like an artfag project first of all, which has caused severe strains on the gameplay side of things, because surprise, surprise, artfags are petulant faggots who hate the idea of anyone playing their game in a way they don't want you to.

But again 70BP isn't too bad for Monomyth
>>
>>59700090
Nigga are you serious? There's plenty of trainers with really competent sets, Monomyth already has a terrible issue with money scarcity even if you go out of your way to grind, TRUST ME, I'D KNOW, and you don't even find potions out and about, just vitamins, I know because I went out of my fucking way to find them.
Reducing resources away from the player is the type of crap everyone complained about in games like Reborn, why is it fucking okay when Monomyth does it? Hell, even Reborn is more generous with the TMs it gives you, and that's a game that actually has the excuse of being incredibly long, thus justifying actually gating a lot of shit way later in the game, even though it's done horribly in quite a few cases, yet again, because of kneejerk seethe from trannies.
It's bad game design no matter how you slice it.
>>59700097
Nah, it's a midgame HM, you get at the late 30s to early 40s.
And to make it worse, they massively limited the range of Pokemon that can even learn Surf, and you need Surf to progress a lot, which causes severe teambuilding strain.
Very little thought was put into this game's progression and gameplay.
>>
>>59699351
>The story is so weak and contrived it might as well not exist
I liked the purple haired rival, but the blonde rival's story and the champion felt weak and ineffectual as antagonists because of the story's pacing. I remember laughing when the big bad showed up on screen because he had a chibi overworld sprite but huge, which was hard to take seriously.
>>
>>59700053
>>59700126
Reducing resources and limiting the player is fine, and basically the only real way to balance out something like pokemon. With Monomyth though, it seems like the developers weren't as creative with designing boss hurdles. Every gym leader and relevant enemy trainer after a while just defaults to spamming confusion status moves for some reason. I messed around with the AI a bit and found out mons will basically prioritize confuse ray/supersonic/swagger if they have it, and most bosses do. It's a bit jarring going into the 7th gym and watching the leader miss a fucking supersonic of all things repeatedly because the devs have a confusion fetish.
>>
>>59699828
It's a bit of an anti-cutefag hack. They deliberately cut the cute fakemons from an earlier build. Shope and its evo replaced a pastry-themed rabbit that resembled Azumarill. There were some others that were replaced or redesigned to be less cute and more gross/scary too.
>>
>>59700142
You could argue all day in favor of it, but regardless, the gameplay aspect of Monomyth is weak and the devs threw petty tantrums over pointless crap while forsaking far too many aspects on the gameplay side of things for the sake of artsy stuff. The progression is terrible, not helped by the story basically not existing.
The game's exploration sucks because the rewards are not worth it 90% of the time.
The fights are generally not very interesting or well designed as you said, hell even a shitpost game like Clover had actual thought put into teams and how they fit the character.
As to the confusion spam, I think I know why it's a thing, apparently some Pisces devs worked on Monomyth and from what I remember the confusion spam was really bad in Pisces as well, so there's probably some correlation.
>>
Ok it's probably been discussed to death already but I'm new so how do you solve the problem that every type has its designated moves that gets spammed over and over for all pokemons? For instance water type only uses surf or hydropump, for ground is just earthquake.
If you think that's just how it is, that's fine. But if not what's your suggestion?
>>
>>59700150
remove HMs as moves and make them only usable in the field.
strip every pokemon's movepool and rebuild them from the ground up, giving them everything that makes sense for their biology
>>
>>59700147
>Not only are the designs shit and intentionally disgusting, their stats and movepools are also shit!
Honestly, I started ignoring the fakemons by the second gym. Great design, guys.
>>
Monomyth and quite a few tards on this board are a shining example as to why balanceniggers should never have a say in anything.
>>
>>59700150
Limit TMs again and don't allow many Pokemon to learn those moves via level-up.
>>
>>59700150
Create new moves that create interesting strategies, it's that fucking simple, it's like how the Fighting type was a lot of more interesting in gen 3, you could go for the reliable Brick Break or you could create a scenario were Focus Punch is a viable option. Close Combat was such a terrible idea that it has completely destroyed any variation in Fighting types.
Retards complaining about a lack of variety in sets and then saying you should strip movepools bare of literally everything are so fucking retarded that it's almost funny.
I think interesting points to be raised are how Hex and Shadow Ball aren't necessarily better than one another, but they again like the previous example, have their own ways of being used, variety is the key here. We just need more of it.
>>
>>59700176
As you said in your own post, it's hard for variety to flourish when moves like Close Combat exist to snuff out any alternative options you may want to consider.
>>

>>
>>59698914
I don’t like Odyssey’s variants but I’d take it over original Fakemon
>>
>>59700174
But that's what Monomyth did...
I think people fail to realize games are balanced relative to themselves. Like yiu see people complaining about the GSC level curve but you can absolutely clear that with say a level 40 exeggcute on your team no problem. They're just comparing that to HGSS type beat.
>>59700147
>Fairy snail
>Shimantle
>The little electric guy underwater
>Kotora (raitora is about as scary as a chiikawa character
>Albongo is super cute even if pre evo is precious little baby
It's def more "kaijufag" than "cutefag" but there's some gems..i think the bigger problem is how all of these are gym 4 or earlier and the last half is more "tough".
>>59700149
What was forsaken, pray tell. Doing sidequests solves the money problem, exploring gets you stuff like the lucky egg, evo stones, the only pokemon with drizzle...

>>59700196
>the only pokemon with drizzle..
there's politoed too
>>
>>59700109
>the game is pretty big and everything seems to be moved to later levels to make space for that
This is true. Level/move progression is mostly arbitrary anyway. A game ending at level 75-100 would want to pace moves in a level up pool to avoid mons capping out their potential 2/3rds of the way in, while a game ending at around 50 would have you learning the powerful stuff 'earlier.' It's the same reason why some learnsets were compressed, level wise, between Platinum and HGSS. Progression should fit the campaign rather than being a nonsensical copypaste job.
>>
>>59700247
I think capping moveset learning at the 3/4's point is not a terrible idea. By the lategame you'll have a large pool of pokemon to decide between and it helps to have the movesets fully fleshed out.
>>
>>59700150
All of the moves should be placed on a power spectrum
Moves on the right side of the spectrum are pure power, while moves on the left side of the spectrum are pure utility. And moves on either extreme should have some weaknesses offsetting their extreme power or utility (for example fire blast and will-o-wisp both having a considerable to miss)

For the most part pokemon does this, but they do so in a retarded way where the utility is often so weak and/or power is too strong so the best choice is usually just to go with the most consistent powerful option.
The main reason why they fuck this up is that too many moves in pokemon are delegated to "leveling moves" that aren't intended to permanent or taken seriously, so by the time you get to a point where you're actually building sets for late/end game, there just aren't a lot of serious options to choose between. They're sort of gotten better at this over time, but not really.
In a perfect world (and what I strive to do with my game), a pokemon at endgame might have 10+ different legitimate considerations for which move to bring of a given type, depending on the niche or role you want them to fill within that attack typing.

The second reason they fuck this up is just down to move availability and what the player is put up against. Why should every ground type NEED to learn earthquake? If not all of them do, it makes the ones who do have it stand out and have a more satisfying pure offensive option. And if the above is well executed, the ones who don't have access will find other ways to shine.
>>

Has anyone ever edited or expanded the Gen3 inbattle pokeball sprites, or is every fangame just sticking with vanilla Gen3 or later Gen4 or Gen5 ones?

Now replace Scraggy with either the Grass or Fire starter. All of a sudden your entire team is countered by the gym's first two mons.
You don't get a mon usable against the gym until after you are introduced to the gym, that is the problem. The gym is intentionally designed in a way that turns Route 1, 2, and the Webbed Woods worthless. There is one (1) mon before Catsear that learns one (1) move (limiting to level 10) than can hit Boomboom neutrally or above that also doesn't get hit super effectively by it.
Yes you can get Scrafty, Poliwag, and Shellos before the gym and they turn it into a joke, that isn't the point. The point is the entire introduction to the hack is rendered null and void, you can catch a team and a half worth of realmons/fakemons before you reach Catsear and they are all worthless.

Alright, I figured it out.
Before I run the part of the script that removes the items, I just need to place a label before it, and then after it removes the items, I have the game do a check to see if the bag still has any of those items. If it does, it jumps to the label at the start and goes into a loop that can only end once the bag is empty.

It's fool proof. (I think.)

The rar file has a readme that kinda explains how much is in the game as of current. It is unfinished and there's like 240 mons, apparently the planned final number of mons goes past the base game's typical 251 since he says there's like 20-30 missing, but you can play through Johto up to 5-6 badges, presumably stopping before you can get 7 and thus starting the Radio Tower Takeover equivalent.
As for the game itself, yeah, it's just Crystal as per usual but with the Plaguemons, some new moves, altered dialogue, new sprites galore, plus whatever various novelty features or ideas Hiki threw into the thing like the skateboard, flamethrower, LSD and whatever the hell else he felt like putting in there.

>you can unlearn HM moves and they keep them as field moves
That is such a strange, hack-y way of going about it. I really don't understand what that accomplishes over just letting you use an HM out of your bag if you have the corresponding badge. It's not like you need to plan around the move or anything, just teach it then immediately overwrite it at one of the move relearners. It's a five second inconvenience for no real reason.
>>
>>59701041
>Well that's just Hoenn
Johto too. Surf/Waterfall/Whirlpool.
And I mean yeah, you might not need them all at the same time. But in all likelihood you're only going to be using one water type, so you either stick all 3 onto them, or you have to run around to unlearn them as needed. Both are annoying.

I like the idea behind HMs, but the execution is just flawed. I don't know how anyone can seriously argue otherwise. I don't think it's all bad and that the whole system should necessarily be thrown in the trash. I wish more devs would try to find a way to implement it more gracefully. But there's only so much you can do with it to be honest.
>>
>>59700964

>>
>>59701080
That's how Modern Emerald does it but you don't need to go through the extra steps of teaching it in the first place, just have something that can learn it and you're good. Monomyth's implementation is a weird half-measure.
>>
>>59701061
>Johto too. Surf/Waterfall/Whirlpool.
Yeah, you're right. I tend to forget about Whirlpool because it is necessary for progression exactly once. But still, that's the same town with the Move Deleter so you can get rid of it right away.
>or you have to run around to unlearn them as needed
Once you're done with your mandatory Dive and Whirlpool uses, the moves can go away until you're ready to start exploring. It's really not a big deal at all. Maybe the games could do a better job at signposting when an HM is no longer necessary for progression, but you wouldn't need it past the first playthrough.
>I like the idea behind HMs, but the execution is just flawed. I don't know how anyone can seriously argue otherwise.
Because I simply don't find it flawed. You trade move slots for keys that unlock different areas of the map. Every alternative that has been attempted, from both official and fan games, has just been worse than the old system or simply not having HMs at all.
>pager that can summon anything at will, like BDSP or SM
Roadblocks each have exactly one instance where they can justify their existence, everything after that first use is nothing more than a simple A press.
>can use moves that pokemon can learn, without needing to teach them
Sucks, because you still need to catch and carry around Pokemon to use certain moves. This was annoying in Polished Crystal, because you forget how few Pokemon learn Cut in the early game.
>can freely forget field moves in the field
Similar to above, but it forces you to juggle menus way more often.

>in a game that's too hard not to use it

>>
>>59701093
>Because I simply don't find it flawed
I don't know man. I'm usually the one defending HMs but I find it difficult to believe you're arguing in good faith. Pretty much everyone admits there were issues with the HM system, there's a reason both the official games and fangames have moved away from it for a long time now. It's okay to like something and still admit that it's flawed. It's hard to have an actual conversation about it if you are blinded to the problems.

I do agree that all the attempted alternatives are equally flawed, if not more so in some cases. I think it's just a fundamentally flawed and limited system, and no matter what you do with it will have issues. It's a shame, because as I've said I really do like the flavour of having to use your Pokemon's unique traits to navigate the overworld. It's just difficult to implement that in a way that doesn't have drawbacks. If I had the perfect solution, I'd scream it from the rooftops, but I don't. I think devs just have to choose which drawback they'd rather have in their game.

Well fuck you, then. I'm giving reasoning behind why I like them. They're literally just fine. Not perfect, but I'd rather stick closer to what was than abandon everything.
>there's a reason both the official games and fangames have moved away from it for a long time now
Game Freak has been making the games more and more linear, and removing any sense of exploration ever since the 3DS games. Is it really surprising that they'd just completely axe HMs too? Do you think that's a good thing to follow.
As for fangames, how many of them blindly follow everything Game Freak does? And if not for that reason, it's people who love to exaggerate how bad HMs are and simply remove them entirely.
>It's okay to like something and still admit that it's flawed.
I have. But those flaws aren't big enough to warrant extreme changes. It's just small shit like not putting smashable rocks in Victory Road after you stopped being blocked by them 4 gyms ago. Earlier and more frequent access to a move deleter would also be nice, but that's not a huge deal.
>It's hard to have an actual conversation about it if you are blinded to the problems.
I'd argue the same for you. You aren't accepting what I have to say. You are in literal disbelief that someone just doesn't find an issue with the same things you do.
>It's just difficult to implement that in a way that doesn't have drawbacks.
The drawbacks are the whole point. If there is no give and take, why bother having them at all?
Cut is my favorite example of an HM. It's undoubtedly a suboptimal move, but it's seldom needed for the critical path past the first couple of gyms. If you hold onto it, you get rewarded with access to areas that you normally wouldn't. If Cut was a great move, there would be no reason not to use it and therefore all of the areas blocked by those trees might as well not exist.
>>
>>59701138
But Cut is just one example. Surf, Strength, Fly, and (post-PSS) Waterfall are all perfectly serviceable moves. There is way less of a downside when it comes to learning any of those moves aside from an autistic fixation on having all 24 of your party's move slots being perfectly and unnecessarily optimized.

Monochad here

Where is the evolution methods nigga at? Some of my shitmons are getting high leveled and still haven't evolved

I haven't been able to find him and Gemini keeps hallucinating and being retarded guiding me to the wrong cities?

And when do we get fly?
>>
>>59701149
She's in North Edelweiss next to the Pokemon Center
>>
>>59701149
>Some of my shitmons are getting high leveled and still haven't evolved
quite a lot of them don't evolve into the 30s or 40s. I've got some third evolutions that are apparently coming in the 50s.
>And when do we get fly?
Right after the 6th badge
>>
>>59701151
Use savestates before confirming what you want to look at, you can only do one evolution read a day normally which is utterly abysmal for some of these evolution methods, especially some of the fakemon evos/splits for official mons.
>>
>>59701151
>>59701153
Thanks guys. I was wondering if it was worth traveling back or not. don't feel like doing to forest puzzle again so I'll probably wait. I'm about to fight the 5th leader anyways. I'll just wait until I get fly and they might even evolve by then regardless.
>>
>>59701138
>Well fuck you, then
Alright, yeah man. I was trying to have a legit discussion about the game design but I'm not gonna waste my energy with somebody getting hostile over HMs of all things. Cheers.
>>
>>59701155
>you can only do one evolution read a day normally which is utterly abysmal for some of these evolution methods, especially some of the fakemon evos/splits for official mons.
I get that they wanted there to be some cost to the seer but the once a day limit is annoying, especially as so many pokemon evolve at late levels and its hard to tell if you're just waiting for the right level or if they need a stone or something more
I'd prefer as many times you want in a day but with a higher cost or some item trade involved (a common but not infinite one, like berries or apricons or something)
>>
>>59701155
>you can only do one evolution read a day normally
Alright, this is where I'm drawing the line. Not releasing documentation is one thing but intentionally kneecapping your own in-game solution to the problem you created is asinine. All that does is push players even further towards making their own documentation and actively punishes players that play along with your mandated mystery. What the actual fuck were they thinking? If I can stomach playing any more of this detritus I'm going to use a wiki out of spite.
>>
He's still got it
>>
>>59701174
you are aware that gamefreak made new games with new evolutions and didn't even have the courtesy of an centralized resource that tells you every single evolution of every single pokemon right? like is that not already still more generous than the framework we're all used to?
>>
>>59700968
Most fakemon look awful, I'd rather play a new region hack with pre-existing pokemon than a bunch of new ones that's a mixed bag leaning on dogshit more than anything. Pokemon Prism knew to only have them as legendaries for the Naljo region and that's it.
>>
>>59701192
Does the financial situation get any more bearable at any point? I wanna catch all the freaks I can but I'm too bum ass broke to afford enough vials.
>>
>>59701194
A toddler can faceroll a modern Gamefreak game, it becomes more of an issue in a romhack that expects more out of the player.
>>
>>59701194
gamefreak has always licenced strategy guides with evolution info etc. or at least they used to, I don't know if they still do. but anyway.
now those books were 100% a money grab but they were in fact a centralized resource. gamefreak has also surely been aware of the existence of online resources, and hasn't really done anything to try and stop them. they even do promotions with sites like Serebii knowing that it acts as a centralized resource. so if the monomyth devs don't want to make their own documentation fine, then let the community do it. oh, but they are bitching about that too. they are not acting anything like gamefreak.

Im consistently around $3000, and I'm just after Bugsy, though I'm saving more for pokecenter trips after careful grinding sessions

Aww shit so 2 of my mons require stones neither of which I have or know where to find
The game is great and all but no documentation is something Benjamin Netanyaho would do if he was releasing a romhack
>>
>>59700970
>>>>the game is too hard
you really want to admit this? like, in public?
>>
>>59700488
>3rd playthrough
>Game has been out 4 days

That guy is a schizo but I think you might also be insane anon

if you want to know, you can get some stones at the casino in south edelweiss once it opens back up, which it should be if you're at north
and then the others at the circus boardwalk, which is the town after the 5th gym
>>
>>59701059
I like it because it lets you pick which of your mons does the thing. I'm not really fond of Gen 7 onwards solutions where your pokemon don't get to help you in the field anymore
>>
>Heartfelt Gold
Is it good? Feels like there's no longer any time for community QC with how shit gets poured out now.
>>
>>59701288
THANK YOU SO MUCH BLESSED ANON I HOPE YOU GET A BJ FROM YOUR CRUSH
>>
>>59701326
Tried playing it, game crashed when I caught an alolan geodude
>>
>>59701288
Aww hell no the slot machines are some BULLSHIT

I'm just gonna pray the thunderstone and dusk stone are in that circus place
also looked through the /vp/ archive and saw there's one in oasis cave but idk if I want to walk all the way back there lol
>>
>>59701288
Thanks for the help anyways though
>>
>>59701427
At the very least you don't have to really dick around with the slot machines, you can just save state to brute force the roulette game until you can afford to do the same with Hold'Em, which provides the absolute BEST profits of anything.
>>
>>59701427
>dusk stone
I'm positive I've found one of those in the wild but couldn't tell you where
>>
>>59701430
actually tried this before I gave up I think they're rigged against the player

I kept hitting 2 7s on multiple machines and gave up savescumming after 10 minutes since the third one would never land kek
I then bought 500 points (almost the rest of my money) so I could try it with the poker machine only to realize I needed 1000 kek
I might boot up the game again to try hold'em
>>
>>59701433
>>59701431
I'm a retard i literally had a dusk stone in my bag the whole time since I pick up every item I see, could've evolved my girl A LOOOONG time ago

Now all I need is the thunderstone
>>
>>59701438
Since I can't imagine the oasis cave is that far from south eldewiss I think it's faster if I just walk there then bet my heart out at the casino

You win again...willpower
>>
>>59701446
Ok I did it I got my fat retard dillo
Now my team is nearly complete
And I can go to bed without my OCD bugging me
>>
I gotta say i did not predict what pokemon Twinz evolves into
>>
>>59701483
yeah that came out of nowhere
depending on whether you use the shiny or dusk stone they're facing a different way and I think have different stat distribution which is kind of neat
>>
With Pokecomm AND Eevee Expo putting up "no AI" rules, when will a third party rise?
>>
>>59701490

Yeah they get att/spatt swapped around
>>
>>59701496
Hackdex is cool with AI.
>>
Any decent SM/USUM games that I can play on a real (hacked) 3ds?
