Why does the presence of day/night cycle seem to be such a make or break issue for prospective players?

I don't think it would have blown up like this had the devs just not said anything or said "yeah whatever make your own docs". overall I think it's being made into a way bigger deal than it really is, and I do think expectations for QoL have gotten way out of hand. but the dev's attitude about it all is the real issue here and they don't want to admit that so they're turning it back around on the community.
