I've played Descent 1 and Maximum on PSX. I'm now playing Descent 2 (PC).

the *amount* of added time in remake managing inventory is nuts, because there are double the amount of puzzle items while the inventory slots for chris and jill are the same as the original. you are constantly running back and forth.

there are many more cases in remake where you have to squeeze through an area and killing is unavoidable. and i’m not talking about kerosene for burning zombies, i get that’s optional. the main issue with inventory is the extra puzzle items, not the means of dispatching zombies. in the original game you have a lot more leeway and ability to move forward in progress without constantly needing to go back and forth. there’s really no reason at all other than artificially elongating the experience for there to be as many extra puzzle items when the outcomes are the same. it’s shit design.

re 1-3 don’t have that problem, they keep it moving much better. remake taxes you and wrecks the flow of the game. don’t try to fucking tell me i should be cool with this because that’s how re games just are, because yeah they all have the item management but not to the retarded degree that remake does that adds way too much time and sucks the fun out.

you’re not fooling anyone, character movement in the remake is literally slower than the original. additionally, the models are larger on-screen and make it harder to see where you’re going or maneuver down halls. it’s not counterbalancing anything, it’s adding weight and time to the game. there should be no reason that the original is smoother and snappier and with more responsive control. except that they rushed the remake, didn’t think it through or test it enough and it’s inferior because of bad design choices. it should have been eady to improve on the original but they made it play worse.

Who here was the earliest adopter of the NES? My family got ours in early 1988 or so. It was before Super Mario Bros 2 came out because I had mastered SMB at that point and remembered seeing commercials for the sequel. I don't think it had truly nationwide distribution until 1987.

The ColecoVision was a big and hyped console by a major name with a respectable library of big name games, and it was supported for all of 3 years. Meanwhile the other consoles of the same gen lasted all the way to the Atari crash. So if it lasted three years and still was getting support from third party devs, then it was believed it would last until the next generation.

In-game, the scale is a lot more impressive than Goldeneye's, and there's a lot more polygon work on the interior, and in the details of the ship itself, where-as most of the detail is baked-in on the textures in Goldeneye.

I would say they both adequately do what they were meant to do; having tight pacing and action in Goldeneye, and being a realistic and tense setting in Rainbow Six.

Graphically, I would have to say Rainbow Six is more impressive, but Goldeneye looks nicer.
