I'm fond of many jrpg towns that contain little more than a shop, an inn, and one or two houses with NPCs that deliver worldbuilding information or hints regarding future quests. I don't think the realistic spaces of all modern games are bad, but maybe they aren't necessary for every game in every genre.

This is why I can't take people who fixated entirely on race too seriously; it's fair to say that despite similar genetic lines, the average Chinese and Japanese person are more alien to each other culturally than the average White and Black Americans are racially.

In jrpgs I usually just assume they are all japanese unless explicitly stated or its obvious based off their name or skin color.
