>lock-on technology>no lockWhat did Sega mean by this?
>>10855774This is the PCI Express 16x slot, a technology with a lock.
>>10855779these things broke all the time and the RAM wasnt going anywhere anyway
>>10855779That's more of a catch than a lock.
>>10855774>invented a cool way of adding new content to old games>uses it once
>>10856495it was released near the end of Genesis' life, not many would care at that point
>>10856495It was invented to fix the disaster that was the splitting of sonic 3.
>>10855774Don't worry, Sonic was able to "Lock On" by the Dreamcast era.>>10855789You're an idiot, those are PCIe slots, not RAM slots.>>10855803Really more of just a dust cover>>10856495Like >>10856684 saidThe whole reason it was made was because Sonic 3 is basically half a game because they had to rush it due to the McDonalds deal. This thing was invented to basically finish the game that was originally intended, and they decided to toss in a few extras like essentially romhacking Knuckles into 2 and that blue spheres nonsense while they were at it so it doesn't look like it literally just is physical DLC for Sonic 3.
>>10856495>invented a cool way of adding new content to old gamesSonic 3 release: February 2, 1994 (NA) Sonic & Knuckles: October 18, 1994 (NA) Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles came out during the same year. Sonic 3 was early 1994 and S&K was late 1994. The timing of S&K was kinda ingenuous; because it released just before Black Friday and the 1994 holiday season. I think Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 was even discounted around this time, so Sega could use S&K as a marketing tool to put a spot light back on Sonic 3 for the holiday season. The Sonic & Knuckles cart can be played as a stand alone game, and obviously connected to Sonic 3 for the full Sonic 3 experience. It also contains a secondary 256ROM chip with modified Sonic 2 levels for Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Sega really marketed the 'lock on' technology for the Genesis pretty hard. But never followed it up with any other games. But then again, 1994 was an insane year for Sega as the 32x dropped in NA on November 1994. I think the 32x over shadowed the lock on thing. https://youtu.be/88KJxBhkZmk

>>10856817They probably would have released Sonic 3 in the summer of 94 with the S3&K content if it wasn't for the McDonalds toy deal.
>>10855774>"lol tendies had to wait for 5th gen for lock on tech, sonic already had it">shitty plastic flap that doesn't lock anything>completely irrelevant for gaming >meanwhile, Nintendo's lock on technology>Pic related>Literally altered the course of video games>It's still being copied today>meanwhile sega had NO 5th gen lock on>sega in the 5th gen couldn't even lock onto a consumer base>Nintendo wins yet again>still kicking every other console in the assSegays and segautists need not reply.
>>10858203>>meanwhile, Nintendo's lock on technology>>Pic related>>Literally altered the course of video games>>It's still being copied todayNintendo shamelessly ripped this off from PC games, flightsims and spacefighters especially made use of this and it functioned the same way. Once again, Nintendo never innovates, they simply bring pre-existing ideas with consolebabbies and then everyone jerks them off for it.
>>10858203Virtual-On and Mega Man Legends beat OoT to this
>>10858221>Nintendo never innovat-ACK
>>10858227>Oh, so Nintendo rips off ideas? Well, look at this idea another company ripped off!Point being?
>>10858237Nintendo has had plenty of innovative ideas.
>>10858246Every time someone tries to point one out, it's quickly discovered that someone else did it first.
>>10856817Interesting. I didn’t know the Sonic 2 levels were on the cart. I thought it was doing code injection or something instead.
>>10858251Some obscure piece of shit with a passing resemblance to something good is not "doing it first"
>>10858271>if they're obscure it doesn't count that they did it firstNow that's cope. They were visible enough for Nintendo to see their ideas and take them for themselves.
>>10858279In reality nobody knew or cared about whatever obscure pile of shit you've uncovered today.
>>10858295Nintendo did.
>>10858224You're virtually on sega's nuts>>10858221>nerd shit blah blah blah things no one even played or heard of as evidenced by the fact there's not a single example mentioned in this post.
>>10858304>You're virtually on sega's nutsNah, that was Nintendo, when they ripped off their lock-on system and then took credit for inventing it.
>>10858310>n-no u......
>>10858298>the 5 people who played the obscure piece of shit were all Nintendo employees
>>10857690Yeah I think they even tried to hold off on the Japanese release until they could release the full game but people complained that America already had Sonic 3.They really didn’t want to get caught selling only half a game and finishing it later.
>>10858314>"hey guys! Come check this out, it's the new trash sega is putting out lol it's hilariously awful"
>>10858254The Sonic 2K ROM contains the program code for Sonic 2 but almost all of the assets are still retrieved from the Sonic 2 cart, aside from anything Knuckles related and maybe some outliers.
>>10858313>>10858314Nintendo is the Edison of video gaming. Shamelessly rips off others inventions and takes all the credit for their invention because of their ability to market them. Shameless company, shameless fans.
>>10858338>my invention is just as good! People just don't recognize my geniusCope as old as time itself, literally.
>>10858338Sega is Tesla.Dead.
>>10858254IIRC it has the equivalent of ROM patches on it. When it sees Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 connected it essentially modifies the ROM with additional code on the S&K cart to make one big hacked ROM.
>>10858203>>10858221100% natural posting, in no way samefagging or intentional bait
>>10858221>they simply bring pre-existing ideas with consolebabbies and then everyone jerks them off for it.well in the defense of nintendorks they really don't exit their nintendo bubbles because their autism won't allow it so you can't blame them for their ignorance
>>10858429It doesn't patch the ROM directly, it maps the original games to the "end" of the ROM and S&K is located at the beginning. (I say ROM for simplicity since to the console everything is just an address)Knuckles in Sonic 2 is located on a dedicated 128kb memory on the S&K cart, although most of the original game isn't used it re-uses the sound driver.
Bump
>>10855779Lol
>>10855774They didn't have to put a physical lock because the connector puts a ninja deathgrip on whatever cartridge you lock on to it.>>10856495Faggot, do you want even more games to have DLCs?
>>10858315>but people complained that America already had Sonic 3.What, you mean all ten people in Japan who gave a shit about Sonic games outside of Sega?
>>10860279>Faggot, do you want even more games to have DLCs?Friendly reminder that before the internet and microtransactions, "DLC" used to be called "Expansion Packs", which most of the time had actual effort put into them and were welcome.
>>10860362Warcraft 3 wasn't from before the internet though.
>>10860419Well before Steam and digital distribution was common.
Blame Horse Armor. Ruined the reputation of the concept of DLC from the very start. If the first DLC had been Shivering Isles, DLC and Expansion Pack would be synonymous.
>>10860461>blame a non retro American game for tendies thinking sega stole z targeting from themYou need to spend some time away from here.
bampu
S&K is better standalone
>>10863997Agreed
