A lot of old games need the open source treatment. This is great because then you can modify the game to be compatible with modern machines and also have modding support.
How is the third one? I only played the first one.

Descent 3 3.6/5 not great not terrible positives 1. great graphics for 19982. lots of new robots & enemies and weapons(mass driver )3. some great levels especially the descent add on mercenary campaign (seven extra levels)negatives1. Difficult is wrong rookie is like hotshot , robot AI is very tough now 2. when you get full map upgrade it shows you everything, does not mark places you have not been, making it worse than useless3. No high score table4. No lives counter , lives mean nothing5. Overall story starts out great first few levels but descends into mission of the week , many of them bizarre. 6. over complicated mission objectiveness and puzzles bizarre puzzles. i.e. Turn on the generator power , enter the switch sequence , locate 4 bypass connectors , charge the plasma, etc etcsome missions literately require scores of steps. I get getting away from the whole blue yellow red paradigm but they went too far , descent is a fighting FPS abut combat the puzzles are figuring our how to resources to defeat the enemies. not running around solving puzzles and operating machinery and reading logs.7. omega cannon is screwed up8. Vauss cannon is screwed up many robots bounce off shot cannot not devastate them like with the Gauss or stun lock them like the vulcan.9. energy is too abundant unless you use omega cannon a lot, you rarely run out 10. various bugs in game partiacly level 13 some of them related to core mission objectives 11. Feels like game was rushed and not play tested enough. Overall with improved story and level/mission objective ,design it should be possible to use descent 3 engine to create a great game. I would love to see all 3 games re made with this engine and a huge variety of weapons and enemies
For me, it was always Forsaken. Descent was alright tho.
