You posted it, really
I’ve been replaying 3/Revenge every few years for the last 19 years for a reason

No other racer has ever given my the same combination of “aggression + Jesus take the wheel” feeling

3 is also the reason I still listen to Underoath as a grown ass man
>>
>Of the PS2 Era
There were 3 other consoles, all better than PS2, you fucking Mong.

Whatever, enjoy your glorified DVD Player

yes, anon! Cars go rrv! They go vroom and woosh too!

>>10863576
Xbox played DVDs.
>>
>>10863515
Project Gotham Racing 2, I don't like racing games, but holy molly, that game is really smoking smooth.

not without the dongle it didn’t
>>
>>10863563
Either this, >>10863515 or GT4
>>
>>10863628
it played them

you needed that shit to navigate menus and shit but just a pirated DVD with autoplay you had no problem, and if you're here I assume you're tech savvy enough to figure that shit out
>>
>>10863698
MS specifically disabled DVD playback in the Xbox OS so they wouldn’t have to pay a license fee to the DVD Forum for every Xbox sold. Instead they sold the dongle to unlock playback and cover the license cost.

Burnout 3, it's not even a contest.
>>
>>10864173
Yeah that one was dope as hell, it's a shame about MC San Francisco though.
>>
>>10864145
>>10863515
one of these
>>
>>10864145
This has to be upscaled or a remaster I'm not aware of, there's no way the car model looked THAT smooth on a 2006 game.
>>

>MC San Francisco
qrd?
>>
>>10864384
It had a PC port
>>
>>10864392
Game was just unbalanced as shit, they had to release a patch to make the AI less ridiculous and it's still kind of unmanageable.
>>
>>10863563
Nah this one is better
>drift events, can race on the c1 loop, real race tracks, lap races, classic style sp battles, custom paint job/decals allow for a higher pixel count than txr3
>>
>>10864135
To give a good answer.
>>
>>10864316
>>10864392
he meant Los Angeles, the 360/PS3 game. The last of the series, sadly.
>>
>>10864470
This one feels like a poor mans Gran Turismo with its track design. I prefer the vibe of wangan and hakone in Shutokou Battle and Kaido Battle
>>
>>10863538
You have no idea how much better this board was before any 6th gen consoles were "considered retro"
>>
F-Zero GX
Mario Kart Double Dash
Burnout 3
Outrun 2
Gran Turismo 3: A-spec
Stuntman
Crazy Taxi
>>
>>10865145
every board is better with less traffic. unfortunately this one is becoming /v/ 2.0.
>>
>>10865148
Not gran turismo 4?
>>
For me it's a tie between GX, O2k6 and B3 depending on the mood.
Truth to be told, O2k6 is my game of choice when I just want to chill in general.
>>
Gran Turismo 3
Battle Gear 3
Kaido no Densetsu

Among more arcadey ones, Ridge Racer V and NFS Underground 1
>>
>>10865139
>suzuka circuit
>poor mans gt
gt4 also uses suzuka circuit you dingus
>>
>>10865809
This is what I said. As a game about closed circuits it's a poor mans GT. Kaido games are better.
>>
Underground or Most Wanted
Burnout is fun but it gets repetitive.
NFS breaks it up by having tuning and exploration to pace out the racing
This is of course ignoring any kart racers or rally games, because if it's not ignoring those, then I'll take some of those any day over both those series

Holy crap I had never thought about this. That's weirdly fascinating, the Xbox having to scramble for the DVD audience. I wonder if Gamecube tried to do the sa--oh, nevermind
>>
>>10865831
Exploration in NFS sucks, UG1 is the best one
>>
>>10865842
NFS Most Wanted was the first one with an open-world I think. It was sick. Most Wanted made my pp hard at how cool it was at the time, it will always have me as a defender. Though I played it on PC, so maybe it's not so good on PS2
>>
>>10865149
No, there's a goldilocks zone. Too few traffic and it's shit too

the mountain passes might as well be closed circuits themselves besides being able to race against characters from both series is great
>>
>>10865853

that was underground 2 and I thought it was lame that the cops in mw didn't do fuck all during the actual races

I really liked Juiced but I didn’t really get into racing games outside of it (ironically now I only play retro and iRacing) and I didn’t have anything besides it so I didnt have anything to compare it to. Also upon looking it up it appears that it didn’t review super well, but it made the PlayStation 2 Greatest Hits catalogue.
>>
>>10865906
it's because people expected nfs underground arcade but what they got instead was simcade with the throttle control and mechanical damage aspects
>>
>>10865145
>only the consoles I grew up with should be considered retro!
lol. The PS1 has been considered retro for over a decade now, so why not the PS2 after the same amount of time? Because it could play DVDs? PS1 played CDs, which the Mastersystem couldn’t do so the PS1 isn’t retro. You could do online multiplayer on the SNES, is that not retro anymore?
>>
rfagdor :DD
>>
>>10865145
Millenial here. It's better now. I can discuss SNES, PSX, but also PS2/GC without having to deal with the rambunctious /v/ crowd.

>>10865149
If you think this is anywhere close to /v/ 2.0 then you have clearly not been to /v/ recently.
>>
Gran Turismo 3.
>>
Flatout 2 is the best
>>
>>10863515
I've played them all and I would say HP2.
Most satisfying physics and track layouts.

Runner up would be F1 05. 06 doesn't have Spa on the calendar. Also Colin McRae 04, and Test Drive Unlimited for the sheer insanity of having the island of Oahu to scale in a PS2 game.
And for a non-car racing game, its Downhill Domination hands down, no contest.
>>
>>10865145
It was only bad for a couple days when 6th gen consoles were first allowed, and it was mainly from people complaining about the new rule rather than the board being flooded with 6th gen discussion
>>
>>10863628
worth the price, the remote is better to use. the dvd controls on my ps2 with the controller were fucking annoying and tedious. talking about the slim not sure how it was on other models.
>>
>>10866106
Been saying this and no one ever knows what I'm talking about

I liked ridge racer too though

this was one of my favorites, fun to play.

need for speed underground 1 & 2 were also good
>>
>>10865856
This. Too few posters and it's too easy for certain users to dominate the board and lock out new blood, so the place becomes a stale circlejerk. But too many posters and the unwashed hordes can shit up the place with impunity.
>>
>>10865120
Oh yeah, I was confusing it with Driver SF somehow.

I keep telling people not to over hype that game

I just realised that racing had a quite short peak era compared to other genres
Basically 1997 to 2010 so less than 15 years
Quite sad honestly
>>
probably not the best racing game, but i have fond memories playing dt racer split screen with my dad.
>>
>>10867860
Bait but I'll bite. Even as a resident GT1 fanboy I see that the peak started with Daytona USA and Sega Rally. Daytona in its arcade version with network play is objectively a better racing game than Gran Turismo 1, which is a more niche videogame by design. It's not niche sales wise because it has attracted car nerds outside of the gaming circles.
Now regarding when the peak has ended, 2010 is quite late. I'd say it's 2004 with GT4 and Burnout 3.
>>
>>10868051
Stuff like Motorstorm was worth it
>>
>>10868051
>2004
We still had good need for speed games until 2007 and best Forza game came in 2011
>>
>>10867521
EU or US version?
>>
>>10863538
Only the XBOX was better.
>>
>>10868051
I always thought the auto camera gimmick in burnout games seemed lame. Is there a way to turn off the crash cam for races? I remember playing a demo for one and I learned that I don't like racing games that take away control from me so I never bought any of the games.
>>
>>10868130
Both are garbage
>>
>>10863563
Are there any (relevant) differences between US and JP versions?
>>
>>10868373
No, you can actually finish this one
>>
>>
>>10869809
wish I got to play this back in the day
Think I would've liked it
