Japanese Rockman box art is definitely superior to the US art.
>>10865864
It's fascinating to me that RT-55J (the green mechaniloid that guards the body parts upgrade) is featured so prominently on the Japanese box, despite just being an optional miniboss. If you knew nothing of the game and were just judging things based on the composition of the artwork, you'd think RT-55J is one of the main characters, alongside X, Zero, and Sigma.

There's a lot going on and it was satisfying to look at as a child, but what's even going on in it? All the mavericks are falling down Toxic Seahorse's stage?

MMX3 defender btw
>>
>>10866474
It seems like the US MMX box artists were convinced that they needed an actual location for a background and to have the characters sized as though they're all located in the same 3D space, which is fine in theory, but in these cases the results wound up looking like characters floating around and kinda-sorta-not-really interacting with eachother and their environment. The stylish voids of the Japanese box arts better sell the whole "it's just the characters striking cool poses" idea.

I know MM7 came later, but there's that theory that RT-55J is related to Auto (RT...Rightot?). Who knows what they were thinking, as far as I know it's the only miniboss that guards a capsule and that can have implications.

>>10866557
And then the CD-based port of X3 shows Auto just chilling in his own apartment in the catfish's stage intro.

It seems RT-55J, Auto and the intro stage boss from X2 were all based on the porky figure of Yoshihisa Tsuda, an ex-Capcom employee, who worked on X2 as graphic artist and 7 as director. The X2 staff "lovingly" refer to the X2 intro boss as "Tsudarobo".

>look at boxart
>wow, this game looks cool as fuck
>buy it, run to your home excited to play it
>it's some pixelated shit on a black background with not a single thing recognizable from boxart

NES games were especially guilty of this.

I always liked the Sonic CD NA artwork. I think it was one of Greg Martin's better Sonic covers.

they goofed with castlevania 3's box art despite it being the better version of the game. 4's isn't as good either but it's at least okay and doesn't have goofy faces for no reason.

I really like stuff like this that blends the in-game pixel art with a cool hand drawn background.
Anyone have some other box arts like this?

I never owned a Master System, but I had one in my possession for a while, with a pretty sizable stack of games for it. Along with Zillion and Zillion 2. That Zillion box art is one of my favorites, for just how vague it is. Zillion is some sort of multi-media collab Sega did, where there was also an anime series in Japan. I have only ever seen clips of it online. The show looked neat. But I never got into it. I did like the game with its hacking element. I never really played much of the sequel. But that box art...
