How would you rate Koei's strategy games?
>>
a solid i don't care out of i never played them
>>
Uncharted Waters 2 is a solid 10/10 for me, does it count as a strategy game?
>>
They're the main ones I play. RKT2, 9, 11 and Iron Triangle might be my favorites
>>
I had Gemfire on NES as a kid. Not the best game but I liked it.
>>
I do not like games based on China. There, I said it.
>>
>>10870439
More like RPG. Instead of walking, you travel with ships.
>>
>>10870417
Basically menu simulators at best. It takes a certain amount of Autism to even figure out what the fuck to do in these games, let alone in the modern era, trying to find someone on YouTube that has any sense of how to play, even with GameFAQ guides in mind.

However, I do respect these games as we wouldn't have any of the Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors or Warriors Orochi games without them.

As you can tell, maybe my IQ is too low for them desu. I think the best hybrid of these types were the Empire series for the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games since at least the combat was good.

Maybe when we have more generative AI for rom hacks, we can make a ROM hack for these games to force it to have fast paced Fire Emblem type combat, and more general menu simulator type sections that are just easier to understand.

All in all, great scope, terribly executed for the average person.
>>
>>10870417
cool story and concept. but combat and troop building feels tedious and clunky.
certain factions are also much stronker than others.
>>
>>10870834
This post made me laugh. You might like RTK7 man because the menus are real fast in that game and the combat is also pretty polished.
>>
>>10870417
Best strategy games ever made and a very diverse catalogue coming from just one company. Tendo, Iron Triangle, Rot3K X and New Horizons are the GOAT.
>>
>>10870952
PTO 2 as well is the best Pacific war grand strategy game.
>>
>>10870430
Based
>>
>>10870939
Just saw a YouTube vid of it, looks ok.

To be fair I love the soul of the SNES games. I just am too retarded to figure out what to actually do.
>>
>>10870417
I like them a lot, but only from PS2 onward. Anything before that is a little too dry for me.

Thanks dude, good idea about Gemfire.
>>
>>10870417
I love the art, making all these chinks look like absolute chads.
>>
they made eighteen fucking thousand games based on the same book

Gemfire is great. The soundtrack is superb too.
I wish they made more fantasy wars instead of remaking the same historic conflicts over and over
>>
>>10874650
Movies, anime, novels, etc etc etc it's one of the most important book in asia
>>
>>10875773
>novels based on novels
There isn't that much media based on Rot3K but Koei in particular in positively fixated on it.
>>
>>10870417
I prefer Nobunaga's Ambition if only because Japanese history is easier to follow and more interesting than that dry, boring Chinese clusterfuck.
>>
tried playing Rise of the Phoenix a couple times to no avail. Had no idea how to manage resources, who were all those subordinates and what i was supposed to be doing with them. Led my starting armies in a couple battles until they were exhausted and that was it.

i'm used to playing total war games so i guess that made me dumb
>>
>>10876184
The Genesis version of Nobunaga’s Ambition is my favorite combination of simple gameplay, easier to deal with menus & options, and cute graphics.

I’ve tried the later SNES and earlier NES versions and they can’t compete. Way too complex and convoluted.
>>
>>10870812
same, any game with a chinese theme is a hard pass
>>
Aerobiz, GK: Clan of Grey Wolf, and Gemfire were all amazing. Uncharted Waters 2 though is probably what I played the most.

They had a serious run there on the SNES where my friends and I played there games almost exclusively
>>
>>10876198
Watch a TV series called King's War (Legend of Chu and Han) if you want to know the story of Rise of the Phoenix. It's in Netflix. If you watch Three Kingdoms (2010), you'll find many familiar faces.

I've only really put time into the ROTK series (and only the PS2+ games at that,) but they're my favourite games of all time. Unfortunately, it feels like there's no real definitive version of ROTK with officer style gameplay. ROTK7, 8, and 10 are all great, but they all have weird flaws that prevent them from being perfect. I guess that's a good thing though, cuz I find myself cycling through the 3 regularly. As far as the retro ruler-only games go, I've only played 9/11 (heh) and I could never get into 9. 11 is amazing, but it becomes a bit of a slog toward the end of a match where you have no chance of losing, especially if you're playing on a PS2 instead of the PC version.
Imo, 7 > 10 > 11 > 8 > 9. They're all fun though, like Paradox games but simpler. I really need to give 9 another shot one of these decades.

I'm replying IX right now. No EN version for PC so I played CN version because couldn't find JP version.
>>
>>10881596
God damn those graphics are gorgeous.
>>
do you guys have any hope for the rtk8 remake? knowing koei i'm sure it's going to be terrible, but i'd be so happy if it actually turned out good by some miracle
>>
>>10881624
I don't think it's really gonna be that much different from the original except the graphics, addition of more standard officers, and several relationship gimmicks. Personally I'm not really hyped up because I've played 8, 10, 13, and 14, and between all those I don't see the appeal of the 8 compared to 10 or even the newer ones. Maybe the turn based battles for those sick of realtime in 13 and 14, but then again 10 exists.
>>
>>10881596
I really like ROTK7's look

PC version looks better. But console version has bonus characters. I prefer the pretty look.
>>10881734
I played the PC CN version too. I love playing as Zuo Ci because he can summon thunder. He is weak though and the thunder sometimes backfires and hits you or your allies.

why couldn't Civ 3 look this good before they moved to 3D stuff?

One thing I don't like about Civ's map is too many stuff on the map. You build irrigation, mines, railroads, etc. It makes the map look ugly.
>>
>>10881734
ROTK7's city screens are peak comfy.
>>
>>10870812
I was the same way, so when I was a kid I just made dozens of custom officers in the ROTK games and would set up countries for them. None of them were chinese characters, so it made the game a lot more relatable for me. Then I started getting into the setting, years later.
>>
>>10882057
Civ was always ugly. 5 is the only one that looked good. 6 went back to ugly.
>>
>>10882539
I don't know about Civ 4 or later. I only played the first 3 Civ games.
>>
>>10881734
Is that Liu Bei? I know by the handsome face and large ears.
>>
>>10882621
yeah
>>
>>10882621
He usually has the highest charm/charisma in the game.
>>
>>10881734
>that map
The games always make Cao Cao (or later Cao Pi)'s hegemony very overpowering in the north compared to the others, but in the literature and movie they make it sound easy for either Wu or Shu to just waltz to Xuchang.

Do you have a download link? All I could find was a version on TheArchive but the disc image is corrupted

>>
>>10885245
yeah, just Rotk 7 and Dynasty Warriors 5, for both I can only find shitty copies that don't work
>>
>>10885395
I just used the one on CDRomance, but to make it work on PCSX2 you need revision 0.9.9.r5326 - compiled on Jun 25 2012
>>
Cassiopeia must have done the soundtrack:

I like some RTS games, like Warcraft 3. I like some TBS games, generally more recent stuff though. I like grand strategy games like Europa Universalis. I love the turn based/RTS hybrid Total War series. I like strategy games.
I do not like Koei's strategy games at all. They do nothing for me.
>>
>>10885461
Funny, the ones you like do nothing for me.

love many of them.
Peaked in the PS2 era.
s/o to Gemfire.
I nominate Dynasty Tactics (1and 2) for games only I played.
>>
>>10885475
I even like the source material. I was obsessed with Dynasty Warriors 2 and 3 when I was younger, played all of the other releases and really got back in with 8. I've read the novels multiple times and watched TV shows based on them. Don't like the Koei strategy games at all.
>>
>>10885718
Novel, singular. Brain fucked up because my copy of it is a 4 parter.
>>
>>10885446
Obviously I meant the PC versions of both
>>
>>10870417
The only winning strategy is not to play them.

But his soundtracks are so hot. Never thought I could get amped for a turn based battle in ancient China, yet here we are:

They could easily remake those old classic strategy games with some paradox style implementations. The market is there.
>>
Dynasty Tactics 2 is my favourite. You're going to need a lot of patience though, once you're about halfway through, it starts taking a very very long time, especially planning and organizing your generals/officers and which cities/chokepoints they're attacking/defending.
The enemy AI is smart (sometimes) and will usually attack your weakest group with their strongest officers, and those battles take a looooong time.
>>
>>10887289
Feels like they spend 90% of the ROTK budget on soundtracks.
>>
>>10870417
Spoonfeed me on the differences - some are grand strat others are simulation?
>>
>>10887478
>paradox style implementations
Non-stop MTX for half-assed games?
>>
>>10887720
Most are grand stat, only a few are more simulator RPG like Uncharted Waters
>>
>>10888243
Aren't a couple of the Rot3K games more simulation/rpg?
>>
>>10870417
Rotk x is my favorite just because I like role playing and not giving a shit about conquering China
>>
