And it's time to unite feudal Japan yet again.
>>
>>10882932
I was just thinking of this game. The only one I’ve played is Pokemon Conquest lol.
>>
how many of these fucking games are there?
>>
damn, three years to get a US localization
>>
>>10883017
>how many
after almost 40 years I'm still waiting for the spin-offs that explain how the fuck after each campaign unifying Japan it gets de-unified again every single time
>>
>>10883017
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobunaga%27s_Ambition

A lot. Many especially after the cartridge era have never been released outside Japan and they're still making new ones. The PS1 games were all passed over and we never got any of them in the land of the free.
>>
I know, right? Nobunaga must live in some weird Groundhog Day loop where he keeps going back in time and has to unite Japan over and over and over and over.
>>
>>10883017
>>10883053
there's also this for a more spiritual kind of sengoku
>>
>>10883053
My theory is that Koei's cartridge era games were expensive to produce and not big sellers so they had to localize most of them for North America to expand the market for the things and make back their costs but that stopped being an issue with the PS1 so they could just sell them in Japan and make a profit on them.
>>
>>10883209
No that's not it. They didn't localize the PS1 games probably because SCEA hated 2D games and actually made a rule that all games must contain at least some 3D content to pass Q/C.
>>
>>10883219
Wait really? All the best PS1 games are 2D lmao.
>>
>>10883223
All the same SCEA and SCEE both mandated all games had to have 3D content somewhere in them while no such requirement existed in Japan. That was why Namco Museum had those silly museum sections--it was so the games would pass production guidelines.
>>
The two PS2 Nobunaga's Ambition games were also not localized until really late (one of them was 2008) since SCEA didn't care anymore at that point about enforcing the 3D rule for PS2 games.
>>
>>10883017
Koei made:
16 Nobunaga's Ambition
5 Taiko Risshiden
5 Samurai Warriors
2 Eiketsuden (total is 5 but the rest are based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms)
2 Kessen (total is 3 but Kessen II is based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms)
2 Nioh
1 Inindo
And many more spin-off games based on the Sengoku period.
>>
Koei also ported Civ1 to PS1 and of course that was only in Japan as well.
>>
>>10883053
Uncharted Waters was definitely a more time consuming game than NA1 and 2 both of which can be finished relatively quickly once you know what you're doing.

Be really nice if these were translated. I'm not going to learn moon runes.

Look how cute the first game is!

It's a great game. You don't need to know Japanese to enjoy Japanese games. I learned playing these games by experimenting.
Taikou Risshiden 2 is even cuter. Look at those cute soldiers in battle.

I forgot to mention there is an English patch, but I never like those Koei games' English patches. Looks ugly.
>>
>>10883472
This is so cool! Look at those graphics. This is what I mean when I say that I want cute stuff. It even has the firearm wielding infantry! I'll just have to use my phone to translate it then.

Thank you for the recommendation!
>>

It's the DOS version. I uploaded a link >>8459879 long time ago, but the link is dead now. It was still up about a year ago. There is a PS version but it's 3D version and I don't like it. It might be cute if you like 3D stuff.

Japs can draw something that doesn’t resemble manga.
>>
>>10883493
I would prefer the DOS versions. Those types of graphics are very comfy vs the 3D Playstation version that looks pretty bad.

I'll keep looking for the DOS versions in the meantime.

>firearm wielding infantry
There are 2 types of battles:
>castle siege
>field battle
Castle siege are the top 2 in that pic >>10883472. This battle is just standard Koei battle (just numbers, no animation)
Field battles only happens in:
>training (only if you don't control a castle, daimyos automatically control a castle)
>attack an enemy army when it's marching out or besieging a castle
Field battles are fun but it's quite rare. The cavalry and firearms can only appear when you're fighint enemies. Only infantry appears in training.
>>8459692
You can start as other officers instead of Hideyoshi if you have finished the game at least once. You unlock Akechi Mitsuhide, Shibata Katsuie and a create your own character. The last one is a ronin (jobless samurai) so you must find a lord to serve. You can rebel once your lord gives you a castle to control.
>>
too bad the cpu map turns take forever in this version
>>
>>10883573
Thank you! I've actually just found the first game too for DOS so I gotta start that one first in DOSBOX. I'm so happy to be able to enjoy these now!
>>
>>10882932

God damn, I like Koei and I think I even own two of these SNES Nobunaga ones and still I thought this was a fake box image. I mean the tagline! How have I never even encountered the subtitle of this game before? Nintendo Power let me down.
>>
>>10883601
Good luck, anon! Hope you enjoy the games. I prefer Taikou 2 because it's much more refined. I did play Taikou 1 (DOS Chinese version) but didn't get far. I finished Taikou 2 in mid 90s, later part is tedious because there are too many castles to conquer. I just attack, attack, attack castles until my army tired then went back to my base. Rinse and repeat until I conquered all the castles.
>>
>>10883601
Taikou 2 requires Japanese font, I use DOSJP in DOSBox. Just type play.bat to start the game. Don't forget to set your DOSBox cycle to 10k or higher (game is lagging if cycle is too low).
>>
>>10883594
Not a problem if you play in emulators.
>>

I tried Snes9X with CPU overclocked to maximum PLUS fast forward and it still took long.

people still use that? I mean I did too but I've since switched to staging.
>>
>>10884009
It has save state feature. Original DOSBox doesn't have it. Both the original and SVN-Daum versions have no update for years (last time I checked).
There is a newer DOSBox posted here but they change most the shortcut keys and it irritated me. The new one can run Japanese games.
>>

no
>>
in old Nintendo Powers the game counselors they featured frequently claimed Nobunaga's Ambition was their favorite NES game. Is it actually good though?
>>
>>10883594
Doesn't help that it's a SlowROM game.
>>
>>10883472
>You don't need to know Japanese to enjoy Japanese games. I learned playing these games by experimenting.
I know Batista Harpu plays untranslated SNES games by brute forcing it but I'm not hardcore enough for that.
>>
>>10884143
>brute forcing
That's what we did it in the early 90s. No internet yet and nobody but me played these Japanese games. I successfully convinced some of my friends to play those Japanese Koei games and other Chinese/Japanese games. I had to taught them what I knew after brute forcing and experimenting with the games.
>>
>>10884030
ah yeah the savestates. I used SVN-Daum for fluidsynth and shaders when the original DOSBox didn't have, but now there are DOSBox-X and DOSBox Staging both of which have what I needed (X also has savestates btw, but I don't use them because last time I tried it didn't work well). DOSBox-X is still kinda iffy with KOEI games, though, RTK3 literally crashing the program when you use dynamic CPU which is far better and it works in Staging.
>>
>>10884157
I did this with so many games during the 90s and 00s, you really had to replay games over and over working out what worked and what didn't. I actually enjoyed it quite a lot, it feels a little different nowadays even with access to ROMs in Japanese, so much is documented overall.
>>
>>10884167
you can search Japanese sites with Google Translate to find info or strategy guides on games i suppose
