Bakumatsu Kourinden Oni, another nifty obscure SNES RPG from Banpresto/Pandora Box. Fight mythical Japanese spirits and other boogeymen that are fucking shit up and you have to travel between Japan and America to save the world. As to why it's not been translated yet? Probably because the dialog boxes have kanji in them and that is not nice for translators. Also it's kind of racist because the white Americans act snotty to your party and don't want to help you while the Native Americans are friendly.
>>10885221>White Americans act snotty>Native Americans are friendlySo you mean historical realism and not racism?
Haven’t heard about this one, I’m intriguedIs it an original game (i.e. not a port or based on anime?)Seems like it would be a bitch to fan translate
>>10885221another SNES RPG that once translated will prove meh and not as great as you think
this is from that ONI series that had 5 games on Game Boy before they moved to SNES
>>10885229>Seems like it would be a bitch to fan translateOP's not joking about there being kanji.
seems like a game meant for a teen/adult audience because games aimed at children didn't have kanji in them as they can't read those

>>10885221>>10885243Why does kanji makes it hard? Don't know a ounce of Japanese.
>>10885294There's at least 3,000 kanji regularly used in modern written Japanese. As anon said primary school children don't learn kanji, that's not until high school.
>>10885229It's the 7th game in the ONI series.
>>10885294>>10885315This is literally why we invented AI.
>>10885294Since each kanji or couple of kanji represents a whole word (rather than a syllable/sound for kana), and because the text appears to be oriented in a traditional vertical style, trying to fit readable translated words into those spaces would be an abominable chore even for a skilled translator/romhacker team.
>>10885375Then AI needs to stop being so shit at translating Japanese
>>10885221>muh raciststop being such whiny fag
>>10885227ah yes dear commie, because racial stereotypes are realism....
What if:野菜 (vegetable)女性 (woman)船 (boat)家 (house)米 (rice)Now you see why translating kanji becomes an issue in a video game with a finite amount of ROM space.
>>10885254>>10885315Children start learning kanji in first grade and continue throughout their entire time in public school. All of the kanji in these pictures are early jouyou kanji kids in elementary or middle school would know, but some words in >>10885243 like 救国 and 物 written in kana anyway because it's specifically targeting a young audience.
I only played like an hour into this like 20 years ago because I couldn't read anything but I still have the overworld music stuck in my head.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSx2W8IPv8s
>>10885243The kanji isn’t the problem, it’s pretty readable, it’s the top to down script that will be difficult to translate. Everything will look like thisSSDTHERISETIETGTIN..NA..GT….E….D
>>10885761official localizations would tend to chop or truncate the English dialog since it would take more space than the original Japanese dialog otherwise
it's an obscure game as it wasn't from a major publisher and it was a late SNES release from 1996
>>10885860Oh wow. That's actually top tier over world bgm.
how does the machine handle it? Like Retroarch translate tool?
>>10886943Last time I used an OCR somewhere in the 2000s, you could set it to try and recognize text horizontally or vertically. I'd be really surprised if they somehow lost that functionality and the text in the game seems to be properly kerned both horizontally and vertically.
>>10885871They could probably hack the game to have horizontal text boxes
>>10885227Historical realism would be Indians eating each other, enslaving each other (as well as blacks), and attacking wagons and scalping the travelers. Actually sounds kind of sounds like a based game.
Played through this the other year. Very solid game. You play as a secret division within the Shinsengumi tasked with battling supernatural threats.
>>10889473I don't love the character art (chibi or otherwise) but god damn, those are indeed some 1996-level graphics. Some of those shots look amazing.
>>10885761I thought the whole point of Kanji was to make sentences shorter/more readable?
>>10889473Dang it. I guess I should bite the Nip bullet and learn Japanese...
>>10888780American Indians undoubtedly made slaves out of other tribes, usually those they captured from rival tribes. The part about cannibalism was not universally practiced. It differed from tribe to tribe as to whether or not it was actually condoned. Probably more common in New Guinea, Polynesian groups and Pre-Colonial Australia.
>>10885221Google is telling me this is the 6th game in a series? Do I need to know anything about the 5 gameboy games?
>>10891089See >>10885362The main characters of the other SFC game makes a guest appearance in Bakumatsu Kourinden, but otherwise there are no connections between games as far as I know.
>>10890881good luck
the actual language isn't overly complicated (try Arabic if you want to suffer), it's the writing system that's an absolute bitch especially kanji.
>>10885871Just rotate the replacement font letters by 90° and read sideways (easy)
>>10885761Honest question, why does that limitation matter so much to people in the age of emulation? Can't we get a proper human translation to sync up with game events in a separate window without much trouble? I understand that some people prefer original hardware, but that doesn't seem like a good enough reason.
>>10892627>ArabicAnd Cantonese, as well as Ainu, Ancient Egyptian, and Most Dialects of Mayan. Basque, Mycenaean Greek, and most Uralic languages, maybe.
>>10892627Arabic is so complicated that they have grammar lessons in school for native speakers. And then once you learn it it's only useful if you want to work for the CIA.
>>10893598That sounds unnecessarily complicated. Why not just learn Japanese?
