What's your favorite retro strategy/tactics game?Bonus points if the combat isn't slowwwww
You asked about strategy game. I don't read thread titles and OP pictures can sometimes be unrelated
>>10885339Fair enough but the combat is slowwwww because Jason won't take his fucking turn, quit trying to jump and just use the sheep
I've never played one not called FFT that wasn't boring. And even FFT was maybe just the novelty of itNippon Ichi made a bunch of weird ones but because they made so many it backfires on them because now they have a bunch of games all competing with each other for attention. I played Disgaea 1 and thought it was okay but then that was it, I was done with NIS because they had like 10 different ones I could've went for next so I chose noneHoMM3 is good but kinda repetitive. For what it's worth I'm pretty sure you can speed up HoMM3 so it's probably what you'd want OPI kinda wanna mention Valkyria Chronicles even though it's not retro because despite being modern it's also really slow and that's also why I've kinda held off on playing it. It's kind of amazing that slowness is just inherent to the genre almost
I've only played 2 -- Ogre Battle (SNES) and Fire Emblem (GBA)The Fire Emblem game was great. Super slick and fast paced. Really enjoyed it. Ogre Battle I gave up on. It took me several attempts to beat the tutorial fight which was entirely rng. Completely awful game.
Fire Emblem 7Super Robot Wars Alpha GaidenSuper Robot Wars JThey're are my reliable favourites
>>10885381>slowness is just inherent to the genre almostI wouldn't be surprised if it's due to processing power needed for the AI
>>10885313I love Military Madness.I've beaten the Playstation sequel to that has even more levels. It's great, but the graphics are ass compared to the TG16 original
If you turn off battle animation in the Langrisser series, the game plays out entirely on the map without ever switching screens at all. Makes things a lot faster.
>>10885313Shining Force 2 motherfucker
Shining Force 2 is one of my favorites.
>>10886151I will never forgive them
Also maybe I'm just trying to block out the existence of FE Fates, but I swore there was a retro samurai/ninja SRPG out there. Like more than just a single FFT class, because I definitely remember spritework
>>10886186Any Nobunaga’s ambition games?
>>10886172Soulless gets thrown around too much here, but this remake really was a textbook example.
>>10886193Good guess but I think my brain was conflating FE with Dynasty Warriors tactics of all things.
For me it's probably a toss up between Shining Force and Zone of Enders Fist of Mars.
>>10885313>Bonus points if the combat isn't slowwwwwMost of these have faster combat than your average JRPG though, no?Anyway, I like the SF/FE style games though I never liked the permadeath of FE.I'm not a big fan of FFT/Disgaea style games because I never liked isometric perspective and I don't think letting you turn your characters around and attack from behind makes for an interesting or strategic mechanic. My favourite SRPG is not retro however.Ultimately, I think they're just, poor man's strategy games and you would be better off playing HoMM3 or Daisenryakuu.

>>10886186onimusha tactics for gba?
>>10885313how does the length of an average SRPG compare to the average JRPG?
>>10885313What was the first SRPG game?
>>10891798Ultima 3
Not just a retro favorite but one of my favorites in general
>>10892131The single most powerful strategy game of all time.
Jagged Alliance 2
How is Front Mission?
>>10890570They started longer in the 8 bit era when ultima style jrpgs were shorter, then when jrpg length exploded in the tail end of the psx years they were usually shorter, and now that jrpgs have slightly shortened up again about the same
>>10885313Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite tactical game and one of my favorite games in any genre.Loved the battle system, the plot, the characters, the job system, the music... It's also not too long compared to other tactical games and has a great pacing.
>>10891910Because of the battlefield style during encounters?Laser Squad (precursor to X-Com 1993) was 1988, not really an rpg in any way itself though. X-com is about as rpg as jagged alliance 2
>>10892131It's an amazing game, though I personally always preferred Age of Wonders.
>>10892180thiscompletely mogs all Japanese SRPGs
>>10885641>Super Robot WarsThere are apparently dozens of them and look and play like a FE game but I have never seen anyone commenting on them here.
Strategy: Master of Orion II, HoMaM 3, Age of Empires 2 and KohanTactics? Gorky 17 and pic
>>10887713Pokémon Conquest (not "retro") uses sprites. But I guess you'd probably remember if there were not only ninjas but also Shedinjas in the game you were thinking of.
