PC has no slowdowns and a practice mode that is very useful

I love the OG and Shun to bits. They have a great difficulty curve where there are normal, easy routes with additional routes just out of reach. As you play, you'll slowly get better and learn new techniques. Because you start from the beginning like an arcade game, you're repeatedly exposed to the same out of reach doors. At some point you'll figure it out and think "hmm, maybe if I do this..." and BOOM you just unlocked a whole new game. Seriously first learning how to skip entire fields was crack to me.

The player is very organically guided through the game because access to higher difficulty fields is gated by learning the required techniques without ever being directly prompted. As a result when you do learn something new and make it to a new field, you feel like you really earned it. The input system is simple but very deep, so this pattern of learning continues for a long time.

I know how squirrelly and weird the controls are and I'll never, EVER be able to dodge the bubbles dangling like that. If it were up to me to escape hell by mastering that skill I'd suffer eternally. Neat game but I just can't do it.

Why is Japanese art so effortlessly charming, and why is western art so contemptuously ugly?

Pretty much all Umihara Kawase official art is by Toshinobu Kondo.
You've already seen basically his entire body of work; despite having a long career he has few notable credits. The small number of other games he designed for are vastly more obscure than even Umihara. (Have you ever heard of Doki Doki Poyatchio? Me either)

>Why is Japanese art so effortlessly charming, and why is western art so contemptuously ugly?
There are two ways to draw anything: You start simple and add detail, or you take something complex and make it simple.
Very skilled artists benefit from the former method. They can keep adding more and more detail and make the art better and better. Artists like this include Gil Elvgren, Keith Parkinson, and Kojima Ayami.
Everyone else benefits from just focusing on bringing out the simple, essential elements of their subject. This is how most Japanese artists draw, but in the West it is standard for artists to be taught to add detail, not remove it.
Detail has no inherent merit; a piece of art is not better because it is more detailed. The benefit of detail is what it adds to the work. Unnecessary detail can distract or even detract.
In effect, many Western artists put in a great deal of effort to make their art look worse. Often their sketches will be worse than the finished work because their painstaking detail added nothing. The Japanese method sidesteps this and is comparatively "effortless" (although making something simpler while retaining it's qualities is actually very difficult).

there are unlimited ways to draw anything. it all depends.
issue is that general western public sees anything deformed or stylized as "for kids", hence the ultra-realistic approach.
That's about all there is to that.

Surprisingly rage inducing game
