A thread for those using their phones for retro-gaming, from emulation to ports of retro-games.
I have a Poco M4 Pro and I use Retroarch with a Bluetooth controller (one of those cheap ipega controllers) and it works fine outside of N64 emulation giving me stuttering, heard I'm better off using mupen64fz instead.

>>10896131
I guess the thing is if you just buy an affordable controller that is compatible with your gaming console and your phone, you didn't spend enough to warrant turning yourself into a disciple of a brand or product. There is nothing fancy or complicated with buying a BT controller, either it is adequate or not.
>>
>>10896236
fine.
Is Duckstation on android better than the ps1 cores on retroarch? for some reason the games I have make the emulator crash (ridge racer revolution, wipeout 3 se and tenchu).
My current ipega controller works fine even if the dpad isnt that good.
>>
>>10896251
Cores are usually, and just slightly, behind the standalone emulator. In the particular case of Duckstation I prefer the standalone version. The configuration is pretty easy and it should detect your controller without issue.

I usually don't use anything on retroarch except mgba and gamebatte because you can't really move the control placement on the screen like on lemuroid. I would usually go with stand alone apps and just do a frontend like daijisho. Wish gamebatte and mgba had stand alone apps on android.

I tried to get into Android emulation. I just can't, at least with what I have in hand now.

I recently got emulation running on my ipad and its fucking killer. My xbox one controller connects instantly through bluetooth, no lag, everything runs lickity-split. Buy a gamepad mount for DualShock or Xbox controller, it's better than a chinkpad and you most likely already have one of those controllers.
Also if you want to get into PS2/GC/Wii emulation I really recommend you to get a phone with Snapdragon, otherwise it doesn't matter too much.

Is there a reason to get a more powerful handheld than something that can play Metroid prime?

I don’t have my PC with me right now, so Delta being up in the real app store gives me something to mess with. It would almost turn my phone into a portable game console if not for airplay sound lag. PS5 controller sync, airplay to tv, everything looks good, but sound lag. It works well enough on the phone by itself for turn based games. I want a skin for NES games with a large screen horizontal, but the only one I found rounds the screen edges.
>>
>>10895760
I used that same ipega controller back in like, 2015. I don't like the controllers that have the clip for the phone above them. The weight distribution sucks. After playing with different controllers, I found a physical USB connection with a horizontal layout is best.

I now have a Gamesir X2 and it was ALMOST perfect. It has two major flaws however: the USB port is on the wrong side, flipping the audio orientation, and the port isn't long enough to fit the phone without taking the case off.

Where do I even start? From what I gather the recommended retro emulator is lemuroid. Where do you even get roms now a day? All the sites I used to visit have been dead for literally a decade and I don't think I'll manage to find my old floppy disks and cd roms.
>>
>>10906014
>Where do you even get roms now a day?
You can just google "[game name] rom" and you'll get dozens of suitable results. Vimm's Lair and CDRomance are the best, Vimm has everything even Wii and PS3 but CDRomance is great for all the prepatched romhacks/translations. coolrom is fine if you're not playing Nintendo, since all the Nintendo games got removed.

The whole point is to leave it in the phone and never take it out.
2. The controller: self explanatory. Designed for horislop on most phones but also compatible with foldables for a DS like experience. Which I don't have, but keeping the phone vertical would be the next best thing
3. The type c extension cable: with 2 right angle magnet brackets on each end, it connects the controller to the phone and holds it in place in portrait mode
4. The silicone band adds additional support to keep the phone from sliding down. It rests pinched in the telescopic joint of the controller and extends diagonally across the phone, nice and snug.
I can play whatever I want since the screenspace covered by the band is just blank in Retroarch, and if I wanna play anything else I can just resize the window since it's a Samsung.

I come to 4chan for this.

But I do have a serious question: is that controller compatible with most emulators out of the box?
>>
>>10917872
Also, to expand upon this subject. I'm sure you can find a controller + clip that rotates. That would allow you to have the phone on portrait mode. That may be a more elegant solution, but I admire the ingenuity of your current solution regardless.

>>10917872
Oh yeah, it's just X-input which is recognized by Android and works with most apps. Retroarch Auto maps it perfectly and everything. I also use it for Citra and Roblox

I was thinking of maybe 3D printing something like that. Or maybe using one of those phone dashboard mounts. That way I could get more of a GPD XD/Retroid Pocket flip type of feel. But honestly, might be too much work, and of course there's always the weight distribution factor with something like this.

>I feel bad for your generation, sincerely. You never had any actual experiences. Look at how much of a retard you turned out to be, god damn. I could almost forgive your circumstances if you said how you mowed lawns all summer to buy an old N64 and played Mario while your friends were playing Fortnite, there would be some soul to that. Unfortunately your actions further confirm that anyone born after 2000 is a soulless husk with capacity to appreciate art or beauty. You should probably kill yourself before things get worse.

Citra Vulkan renderer somehow got fucked around build Nightly-2030 of Canary.
If you device doesn't have AdrenoTools support, you're pretty much screwed.
>>
>>10919506
You mean the GPU driver thing? Yes my device has that option but all the drivers I found are for the adreno 6xx series and up. Is it safe to use them on a 540?
>>
>>10919620
Yes, there are ones that are still compatible with 5xx GPUs.

I'm playing occasionally on my general phone, so a Samsung A54.

I haven't taken the plunge in getting a controller yet, but have been having playable results using Pizza Boy and Pizza Boy GBA with my touch screen. It becomes less playable if you have a more action-y game though, I'm sticking more to Zelda and Pokemon.

Mupen64, Snes9x and redream are all working pretty well on the games I've tried with them, but you're really hampered by not using a controller there.

PSPP I've had a more slowdown with when trying to use it, but still playable.

I'm considering getting a dedicated second hand phone for some of this though.

Wow, this is exactly my setup for platformers, bought new DS4 a year after PS5 release was not easy to find, and exactly the same clip like on picture. Bought it in addition to XboxOne pad, after I unable to pass fucking flying bug boss in Demon's Crest because B button on XboxOne controller is dogshit and the dpad is barely okay. The pic is the most comfy way to play AM2R with widescreen.

Will just leave this here - http://opentouchgaming.com/zeta-touch/ - because the Build engine is the best thing that ever happened with FPS games after Doom, and this thing runs Build games flawlessly and has advanced support for controllers. The funny thing is that Build games are better to be played with aim assist on, because the engine was designed for keyboard-only and mouse support sucked, this aim assist works perfectly with controller.

> I guess the thing is if you just buy an affordable controller

Even this is usually not necessary. Highly likely almost everyone already has an android phone and some old x360/xone/ds4 controller. Phone clip is 10 bucks. Good (short enough) usb-c to microusb cable is harder to find, but it is surely not expensive. Hardware setup is trivial - phone, clip on controller, connected by a short cable. No batteries, no controller recharge, no bluetooth sync - just connect and it works on any android. Software setup - most emulators are more polished and feature rich on Android than even on PC. Magic DosBox for example. Want to play this new Supet Metroid romhack? Getting rom from archive.org, hacks from Metroid Construction and applying them to ROM file - all this is 5 min on the phone itself, no need to boot the PC and research how to run this rompatcher on linux. Someone already done an android app for this. Bored of playing Dreamcast FPSs (there was Unreal Tournament on Dreamcast btw) and want some Hexen2, Blood or Half-Life - they all are easier/same to run on android as on PC. This thing is just perfect when stuck somewhere, like at airport or in hospital.

Recommendation for Drastic is Soma Bringer game with English patch and highres enabled in Drastic. Everyone played SMT on DS, but virtually noone played this gem (on actual DS at the time). It looks better than many 3ds games. Spent like 100+ hours in it about 5 years ago (pre covid).

>>
>>10925363
Yep, I am retard who cannot read. Though maybe bluetooth headphones will solve it for telescopic switch-a-like controller? Never had one to test with a phone, prefer first-party console controllers with a clip.

It's good to see us smartphone users getting a bit of love around here. How are you all doing? I've been posting on /vr/ a lot less sadly, as life just finds things to throw at us when we start working and all, it's a pain, but whatever. Right now I'm still with my Galaxy M30, which I'll keep for the rest of my life since it's the smartphone I had when I began talking to my GF for the 1st time, and I have the feeling I'll marry her for sure, and then there's the MOCUTE-060, which despite not indicating its battery level properly anymore, it still works well, so I really can't complain much.

I'm probably going to replace my laptop at some point this year or the next, for a tablet, probably a Samsung since I'm familiar with them, I used to prefer desktops and laptops over smartphones or tablets before, but recently they've seriously been growing on me, my GF's iPad certainly helps with that... and I think I might just have the tablet be my main machine for everything, plug it into a TV for a more console feel, and use a telescopic controller for a handheld feel, it feels like a nice and cheap Switch like emulation machine, and a laptop at the same time if I attach a keyboard.

This.
It's either a software issue, or a hardware issue.

I use my S21 to emulate PS2 titles. So far, I have tried Gran Turismo 4 (pic rel) which runs perfect without any tweaking, just install and play. I have also tried MGS2 and 3, both of these run almost as good as GT4 but there are a few graphical glitches (breaks the game on MGS2 since I can't use a sniper rifle and is very annoying on MGS3 because it breaks the water textures) and cutscenes do overheat my phone, thankfully these can be solved easily, but are quite annoying sometimes.
I don't see why hate phone emulation and yet have a raging boner for chink handhelds, soon the latter will be rendered obsolete.
Also, I don't use any sort of controller, it's not impossible to get used to the touchscreen.

My smartphone is far more powerful than my laptop. I used to think like you do, but then I realized that mobile technology has improved so much it's unreal.

>Nah, stick to a laptop for your new device.
How come? Of course, I can understand all of the advantages a laptop has, mainly the OS, its native keyboard and all of the ports, but I don't plan on diving head first into this, that'd be rash, I'll go in with a cheap tablet just to see if I like it, after my GF's iPad made me like them for the 1st time, if I manage to enjoy and adapt to owning one, I'll go for a switch, if not then I'll just get a new laptop.

I just think it's so appealing, I'm already used to Android nowadays, so OS wise the switch would be fine, also don't mind needing an adapter for a few ports, since I don't use them all that much...

I just find the idea of having my desktop, when I plug it into a monitor, my laptop and a dedicated handheld console... all in one place, way too fun and convenient, I'm a minimalist I guess, I like it.

See, that's the thing about both smartphones and tablets. You buy the entry level/budget/poorfag version and you get fucked in the ass, those devices don't last at all and rarely perform to an acceptable level. Even mainstream brands. You'll basically get a shitty experience that will slowly deteriorate until it shits the bed. This is quite different with the flagship phones of most mainstream brands, they are actually quality (sometimes) and can last several years.
Laptops on the other hand, have all those qualities you mentioned but what's more, they are naturally more robust and will last to the point that you get what you paid for.
>I'm a minimalist I guess
Then you should know it's best to buy something with at least an acceptable degree of quality.

Never.
All smartphones are the same thing now.
There's not enough demand.
