What Star is the hardest to get in Super Mario 64 according to /vr/?

Also if you want to *actually* beat the game, which perfect coin score is toughest to achieve?

Tick Tock Clock 100 coins
>>
>>11049384
I don't think I ever pulled this one off. Tick Tock Clock is pretty brutal precision platforming compared to the rest of the game.

for me probably rainbow ride 100 coin

Rainbow Ride 100 coin but fuck 100 coin stars they are dumb unnecessary padding. Hardest 'real' star would also be either in Rainbow Ride, the one that requires you to get to the very top
It's all still nothing compared to some of the shit in Sunshine, now that game is frustrating to 100% even without the blue coins

i always dreaded 100 coins on hazy maze cave the most

This was the last star for me as a kid. I still think about it sometimes and wonder if I just sucked or if it was really that hard

these are the trinity of pain in the ass 100 coins
for rainbow ride, you have to do all those wall jumps to collect all those blue coins in time, so that's where you should go first
in hazy maze cave, you should head straight for the gas maze because there's the potential to fuck that up
tick tock clock doesn't have one thing that makes it hard, but it's definitely the most dreaded 100 coin for me

Imagine the smell... does anyone have the bricks one from the courtyard? Something about how they had to replace the bricks around the door because bowser was too big to fit through them. It was written like an innuendo that bowser sodomized peach.
>>
>>11049802
You forgot about Dire Dire Docks where there are like 105 coins in total
>>

>>11049919
I think the takeaway is that the 100 coin stars were never fun. I hated doing them even back in the 90s.

It's a 3d platformer staple to have some absolutely godawful and antifun challenges required for 100%
>>
>>11049930
>>11049945
Eh, 100 coin stars are fun in a different way. In a way they're THE proof of your mastery of a level, i.e. your ability to dodge the increasingly frequent ways of fucking up, all combined.

I actually managed this >>11049382 once back in the day, but it's 100% not worth the time and effort.
>>
>>11049983
>In a way they're THE proof of your mastery of a level
I agree but you know what would've been better? Time attack stars like relics in Crash 3. I think it should've worked because while not entirely linear, the levels in SM64 are not that open either, especially the ones like Tick Tock Clock
>>
>>11049436
>some of the shit in Sunshine
Can you elaborate? Coincidentally I'm about to play it for the first time.

Genuinely how were you supposed to know?
>>
>>11049384
This is easy if you just stop the damn clock and leave the collecting at the end when the whole level is accessible
>>11049436
Is also easy because of the sheer amount of coins in this level, particularly the blue coins make this challenge super easy
>>11049559
This one sucks because of how separated the coins are but hazy maze is hard to get killed in apart from the giant pit.
>>
>>11050112
Sunshine is the hardest Mario game after SMB2J if you are going for 100%. Play it yourself and you'll understand why everyone is so assblasted about it. Still most of the challenge IS intentional but there are some moments of pure random and jank.
If anything it's objectively like 3 times worse than 64 but it's still among the better platformers of its generation
>>
>>11050169
Found this by accident.
>>
>>11050169
we just figured it out
idk the name of the stage was the hint and the cannons are accessible so we just kinda assumed and as kids we went everywhere and shot ourselves into random things for fun anyway

i think thats the strongest part of being a kid during that period of gaming
you kinda just found stuff on accident because you spent way more time messing around in the game than you did actually playing it
my friend spent more time shooting each destroyable object and trying to draw with bullet holes in goldeneye 64 than we ever played it

>>
>>11050169
Other than the mission's name, I think that from certain angles you can see light poking through the line dividing the breakable part of the wall and the rest of the wall. I didn't know English as a kid so I remember that's how I first figured it out, no clue how I could fuck around for so long back then lol

>>11049376
On that note, as a kid I never talked to the Toads because I had no clue what the fuck they were saying, so the stars that took me the longest to get were the ones they were hanging on to lol. In terms of actual stars, I remember the 100 coin star from Shifting Sand Land being the most nightmarish for me, but since nobody else is bringing it up I was probably just too tired when I tried to beat it first time around.
>>
>>11050981
that one's a pain because you have to fly around the overworld to get those red coins and some assorted yellows and then enter the pyramid. same with lethal lava land and the volcano but getting the coins with the shell isn't as annoying.
>>
>>11049414

Lazy bait aside, a good over half the levels are really, really annoying to max.

Oddly enough, a popular general reply in this thread, Tick Tock Clock, is on the medium-to-easy tier in comparison to even early levels like CCM because it's relatively compact, linear, and almost all coin grabs are neatly packed in boxes. The really hard levels are the ones with lots of enemies and lots of pits where those enemy coins may randomly stumble into.

Anyway, Rainbow Ride is at the very least on the hardest tier to max obviously, if not the absolute hardest. So much random shit can go wrong in that one.
>>
>>11050184
You are either just so unbelievably bad at video games or have never played it. The controls are 100 times better than 64 and aside from the obvious levels to complain about like Pachinko, which honestly once you figure out how it works isn't that bad, there's nothing to really complain about. Blue coins are just another collectible like any other 3D platformer not this fucking demon spawn mechanic everyone makes it out to be for whatever reason. Every common complaint about Sunshine is just completely unwarranted and wrong. You're free to like 64 more but I'm really just kind of sick of people, that clearly haven't played it, putting it down for no reason.
>>
>>11051524
it's not just another collectible, it's one that annoyingly pesters you to save after touching it, and one where you need every single one to 100% the game so if you miss one you're fucked
>>
>>11051524
Oh fuck off, not even that anon and I have to admit that Sunshine is the only Mario Game I've not 100% completed because it simply wasn't worth it. I've collected all 120 stars in 64 a dozen times and have never collected all the shine sprites. The Pachinko and Lilypad levels in Sunshine are harder than ANY star in 64.
>>
>>11051524
I'm sorry for hurting your feelings. I agree that the character movement in this game is great. Blue coins suck
>that clearly haven't played it
I 100%'d every Mario platformer except Wonder. I love almost all of them including Sunshine. I never claimed it was a bad game
>>
>>11049382
as a kid hazy maze cave and rainbow cruise fucked with me
none of them are particularly difficult
the clock level can be troll-tier if you attempt it at the wrong "time"
>>

>>11050184
SMB2 For Super Players is really easy if you use the infinite 1-up trick actually. Only in Mario Deluxe and with RetroAchievements, where you are required to kill every Bowser with Fire, does it begin to become difficult

This is my pick too. It sat uncollected on my file for at least a year. I think I only found it in the end through a weird bug where the wall part unloaded.

I always accidentally hit that corner and blow it up. What's wrong with you?
>>
>>11049382
I attempted to do this a few years back and actually managed to get them all in Hazy Maze Cave, but then I tried Lethal Lava Land and just couldn't fucking do it. I wanted to pull my hair out I was so frustrated.
