Ridley is the real final boss in terms of being a test of your skills and firepower. The real final boss is your baby metroid frendo but because samus fed it her energy it recognized her as its parent. Thus it reinvigorates you instead.

I actually think this is the correct difficulty curve for a game.The final boss should be a spectacular moment. Not necessarily the hardest part in the game.
