Trying to get into KOF98. Which one is more played, vanilla or UM? Also, does every normal>command>special>super string works? I'm trying to get my head around the combo system.
>>11107671The combo system is like ST/SFA, you can't cancel specials into supers. Otherwise yeah. Typical KoF combos go like >close C, (command normal), special / super >cr.B, cr.A, fast special / super (OR fast command normal, then special/ super) It's really not complicated. As for 98 VS 98UM… I'd say it's a tie. Vanilla is free on Fightcade and has been played for decades. But it also has quite a few barely viable characters, and Extra mode just sucked. The input reader is also notoriously tight.98UM mainly changed Extra mode, it's considered a bit stronger than Advanced now, but it's also pretty weird and not everyone's cup of tea. UM also gave some characters much needed improvements (Yuri, Heidern, etc.), and overhaul all the EX versions of many characters, making them more interesting than the vanilla game. Then again, the balance is still not perfect, some characters got nerfed to shit for no reason, while the OP ones are still OP, and there are new OP ones too.If you really want more viable characters, Extra mode, and your waifu is stronger in UM, then play UM. I prefer the original
What about Final Edition?
>>11108019That's the one on Steam. I think you will only find non-Final Edition on PS2 and arcade (iirc), Final Edition is more like a patch
>>11107671Some people think that 2000 / 2002 had crazy strong combos, but 98 still had some really nice stuff. But to get a feel of how the game is actually played you better check some tournament videos. The other way is just to get the shit beaten out of you playing in arcades or against strong opponents and learn from that, which is how I learned.https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Kof+98+tournament
