The King of Fighters '98 turned 26 today. Say something nice about it.
It's fun
Why is kof so /fa/
>>11109994Had good time emulating it with NeoRageX back on my old 400MHz Pentium 2
>>11109994The SNK's Super Turbo!
>>11109994>say something nice about iti think 99 is my favorite but a LOT of people love 98i love them all
Uh I guess it was neat to see the USA Sports Team and Rugal with brand new sprites. And the Masters Team as well, which by the way was an awesome concept for a team. Odd that Eiji and Kasumi didn't make it though.I suppose this game is superior for competitive play but I'm not really competitive so I kind of prefer 97 for the presentation and story/endings. "Dream match" games like 98 always feel incomplete to me due to lacking that element.
Twenty years ago I got a Neo Geo at a flea market for twenty bucks from a guy who likely pulled it from the trash. Spent five bucks on a Genesis 1 AV cable and was surprised to see it worked. Bought Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Shodown II, and KOF 98. Took it to an anime convention at the community college and made friends there that lasted all the way through high school. We spent a shitload of time playing KOF 98 and had tons of fun. Despite that being a really hard time in my life I had this gem to help me through it. Shame I don't have as much free time or as many friends these days.
>>11111935Europoor here. Never saw a NG machine or console in my life. For me it was 21-22 years ago and some emulator like NeoRage or Kawaks. I downloaded KoF94 first because it was the smallest one and my dialup was slow as fuck. Soon after I downloaded KoF98 because the description said that it had the biggest roster. Love these two to this day. Might be nostalgia but when I tried 95-97 later they just didn't click with me like 94 and 98 did. KoF99 and later ones required decrypted roms to work. Later decryption on the fly was added to the emu but it was a very long wait when you started the game.Long story short, me and my school mates played KoF98 a lot. We did our own tourneys at lan parties (everyone also played Counter-Strike during that time). I had a guide from GameFAQs printed lol.
>>11111906>Odd that Eiji and Kasumi didn't make it though. They were added back to the later version. For what that's worth. I think she should still be more regular though.
98 is still my favorite Athena outfit
>>11112071Same. To me, it's her most iconic look
>>11112085I actually like that she always changed it up but 94-98 had a more obvious sense of evolution that I think sort of made it stand out more. And while I do like a few of her post 98 ones (2k2 is nice) I do wish she'd sort of step back into a more kung fu look.
>>11112089Never noticed how her legings shrink in 97-98 transformation frames. Cool.
>>11112071She has some nice balls
>>11111968>Never saw a NG machine or console in my lifeyou never saw a single big red cabinet ANYWHERE?pizza places, arcades, bowling alleys, movie theaters, malls, laundrymats they were fucking everywherethere is still one in tomorrowland\disneyland (LA) to do this day>>11112071>favorite athena outfitSVC chaos bikini
>>11112089For me, it's the '95 Athena artwork. Though '98 ingame sprite is the best indeed.Speaking of KoF'98, what do you people think about it's system? I think it might be the most fun fighting game system ever: the movement options, the almost free form combo system, the way counters work, evades, max mode. It's a bit more interesting than what SF games had but is still very grounded. I mostly play 3rd Strike and Alpha nowadays and I miss movement options in those games while 6 buttons feel redundant.
>>11113930I've never been one to hugely break into a lot of fighting games mechanics the way the more hardcore players but I do like the amount of options you can get just to move around. I have some trouble with things like hops but being able to either dash or dodge and roll are nice.
