Out of all of Nightdive's re-releases, which ones are considered superior to existing sourceports? ROTT is the first one that comes to mind, but there's surely more.

Have they fixed multiplayer for all 4 people that actually care about ROTT yet?
And no, everything else is worse.

Are any of you having problems with the most recent version of Raze? Duke Nukem works great until I reach the window right before the back door entrance to the theater, then my mouse locks and I can't look around until I move from in front of the window, then it works normal.
>>
>>11177629
Arguably Quake 2, but more so because the existing sourceports branched off into a bunch of different directions than the Kex port actually doing anything revolutionary. Now the other ports have something to converge on with regards to supporting the new expansion, MD5 models, and dynamic lights.

>>
>>11177629
I would argue Doom 64's official port.
The previous port always felt like it was held together with duct-tape and gum and I just never particularly liked the way it felt. Just something off about the whole thing.
>>
>>11177761
That's like saying that Quake 1 KEX is better than existing ports, because DarkPlaces, Quakespasm + forks and FTE do different things.
Nerfing Railgun alone makes Q2 KEX the worst.
>>
>>11177801
And to think if those dipshits wanted to nerf the railgun they should have just reduced the amount of ammo it carried instead of just making it weaker. The most retarded way of balancing a weapon in a pve fps
>>
>>11177629
>>11177761
I definitely like KEX Quake 2 the most but then again I'm not a big fan of the original Quake 2 in the first place. Railgun nerf being one of the few downsides.

The side by side double barreled shotgun is the holiest weapon to ever grace man's hands. It epitomizes the core concept of God's world of causality - that everything is a constant push and pull to achieve balance and satisfaction. That in order to know great success, you may have to subject yourself to danger. That with great skill, luck, or divine fervor, you may triumph over this danger and reap your reward.
The railgun is an affront to this holy craftsmanship. The railgun spits in the face of such balance. The railgun bestows great reward for no effort, for no danger. It even has the audacity to lay claim to damage values equivalent (or in lesser games, superior) to a perfect shot with the double barreled side by side shotgun. The hubris and pride of its handout faux-power-fantasy threaten the fabric of the universe. Endless gain is unsustainable. Wielders will know no joy, for they know no sorrow. Snipers will invariably suffer, and they deserve it. Purge the long ranged precision weapon from your hearts, from your wads, or make great effort to humble it with nuanced balance. Never should the vile take precedence over that which is pure.

But yeah Q2R's specific nerf is fucking retarded.

What do we think of the Quake 2 scene revival? Some pretty cool little jams have been made since the remaster. I love that it resurrected Q2 mapping. That shit was dead, yo
>>
>>11177913
Adding onto that closing statement;
The Railgun nerf was 100% implemented to prevent broken quick-swap combos with other burst weapons, since Q2R drastically increases weapon switch speed.
But you know what they could've done instead of touch its damage?
LEAVE THE SWITCH SPEED TO AND FROM RAIL AS SLOW AS VANILLA
This fixes that issue, and lets other burst weapons have an edge over rail that they otherwise wouldn't (and frankly should have).

How do you even go about balancing this broken piece of shit?
>300 damage just for scoping in from any range

Big map anon here. It's more or less finished.

I still gotta join some sectors (which is a pain), but here are the preliminary final stats.

>28361 vertices
>33562 linedefs
>53407 sidedefs
>6603 sectors
>2238 things
>100% cooler than mood latrub (I hope)

It's been a wild ride, but the map is finally beatable and complete to the best of my skills. All that's missing is dehacking one monster (a plasma guy), reskinning the chaingunner and maybe lost soul, adding more sounds and then playtesting the fuck out of it.

Been doing a lot of playtesting with Kustam. Overall I am pleased with this iteration of my sad robot man. He can fuck shit up real good with his guns but if you get tunnel vision you'll run out of ammo and get caught with your metal pants down.

We'll see how some of my other playtesters feel about him. I'm also trying to figure out what else I can do for this update, because I'm sure as hell not going to be able to do a giant final update before the year is over like I wanted to do, because it's late August right now. This compromise upsets me, but at least you guys will have something good before the year is out.
On the plus side it gives me more time to focus on the eventual trailer and some other cool shit I got planned.

You look for the def or script folders in pak000, choose the monster or weapon you want to mess with, and make changes just with notepad. Most of what you’ll change for weapons are in the def folder. Slade has been good for this.

It’s available on the original Xbox as well so it’s very “retro” and relevant. It’s games like Bioshock, Fear, and Quake 4 that are more “arguably retro” - they’re on PC before 2007 but otherwise part of the seventh gen.

I guess I'm usually careful about the soldiers I encounter or have under my command in vidya. The POWs crawling on the floor, bleating like sheep, put me off, but I'm assuming it's meant to be a nervous laugh or something.
I'd call a MEDEVAC for them if I could.

That's usually not an issue with idgames since the person fixing it is the person who uploaded it in the first place.

This Bethesda shit is flooded with older versions of wads already.

I installed picrel to check out the new episode and the physics felt off to me. Changing direction took too long and doomguy had too much momentum when stopping. It gave the game a sluggish feel when doing anything but running forward. I thought maybe it was because I hadn't played Doom in a while, but I fired up prboom to compare and it felt absolutely fine. I can't find anyone online talking about this. Anyone else had this experience?

Look up Cleve Blakemore and see the truth.
A bunch of outlandish claims about sirtec and it's demise from a contract worker there. I don't know if it's just maturing tastes as I've gotten older or what but some time after Doom Eternal dropped I completely turned around on Doom 3.

I think something about the thought of Doom 3 being the final game to ever come out of the series and permenantly sticking it in a weird spot kinda soured the game for a lot of people.

Now I appreciate it as a weird fucked up alt universe spinoff that feels like playing as more of an average joe caught up in the nightmare.

I still really wish Eternal didn't totally drop the alternate viewpoints concept for the DLCs. I get why they axed the idea but I loved the thought of playing through a more modern idea of that, maybe as an ARC trooper during Hell's invasion of Earth, or one of those guards who's bodies you find in the UAC Mars base in 2016.

Immortal Locks encounters are not even that bad. You are given a respawning pentagram and a respawning quad in the last one
All you have to do is run around the crowd kiting them into nice clump and keep penta and quad up at all times which is easy even on the hardest difficulty.
The only wrong thing you can do in there is gathering a cloud of Vore projectiles which can fling you out of the arena if they all connect.

the problem with trying to make a painkiller map
1. it's only gonna be somewhat engaging/hard when on trauma difficulty
2. you have to make the map's baseline architecture decently simple and lock the player in small areas so the dumbass enemies can do stuff/target prioritization is forced over disengagement
3. you have to shove an imperial fuckton of normal enemies in those tiny spaces and/or use super strong yet jank expansion enemies that everyone hates
4. the unenlightened masses who do not play on trauma difficulty will see points 2 & 3 as laziness and padding, instead of a meticulous effort to make a challenging yet fair experience, because the game plays itself on nightmare and below no matter what gets thrown at you

Same here. Making shit in Doom is therapeutic, playing shit in Doom is therapeutic. When I'm feeling down I find a slaughtermap and play it with a slaughtermod, or I just sit down and walk around in Sunder with no monsters, sometimes I see how far I can get playing it normally too.

Anyway, map's done. Waiting on some feedback after adding two obscure and optional areas. Here's one of them, I made it on a lark but I think it's a good practical example of why Doom's colormap and fake contrast are pretty essential parts of it. Kinda wanna do this again but really flesh it out into a full map and not a reference that's very abridged.
>>
>>11180252
Yeah, sorry, I don't actually know much about the original games; I only got into the series with the world of assassination, though I played Absolution awhile back on sale (which was one of the worst?).

My last run got clobbered because apparantly NPCs can see thru bathroom walls. Would have been fine if it wasn't a showdown mission. I went back to New York and just cleaned the place out. Now my latest irritation is 'haha let's just spawn you right in the middle of every single enforcer lmao' or 'hey here have a place where some asshole shoves you 1mm into a trespassing zone so react fast I guess.' That last guy got immediately tanto'd and shoved into a box.

honestly I mostly hate Colorado because the instinct is to retreat from the compound and thats a fucking mistake because there is no useful cover out there and you get flanked all day. My go to strat is start on the tower, or get there, dance around on the roof and kill all the ammo pinatas who come up the stairs, then plink at anyone I can to make them mad and come over to join the party. It's painful, and tedious, and annoying, but will never get tired of deathmatching basically everyone on the map, because there's always that ONE TIME I get careless that gets me killed and re-maximizes my desire to glass that area..

I'm stupid and posted this too soon. Even left a question mark in the wrong place. I wanted to ask: Would you draw a line between "partial conversion" and "map pack with some extra resources"? I feel like something like "Ancient Aliens" is still very much Doom to be considered a partial conversion, while something like "Pirate Doom" makes use of Doom resources but it feels like its own thing, to a degree.

Doom + Doom II is missing a lot of features. I think it's a perfectly cromulent option if you're stuck on consoles.

I forget the specific details but a lot of ports used some wonky shit for their launch stuff, where doing it the wrong way ended up becoming the norm so a lot of launchers followed suit, while DSDA changed their shit to do it the correct way and suddenly the older versions of stuff like ZDL stopped working with it.

Yeah, I think it might be worth to wait a bit more and see if they make a version that's more progs-friendly. What is there is pretty cool but having played Sprawl it does feel like the enemies should get nerfed. In the actual game most fights are pretty small and close-up, but it somehow feels like Quake still has too many monsters and their replacements can feel rather spongy by comparison, given how much more mobile everything is.

TL;DR: It's fun but I think it could be more balanced.

I bet it could be balanced into being a more literal who-dun-it feeling game.

you have to make a seperation between pre-forever duke and post-forever duke. The Hive ruined the duke character character with no redemption.
>>
>>11182136

There's a fun theory, due to the expansion, that you're not even playing Duke in the main dnf story. You're a dukebot.

But I like Time to Kill, Zero Hour, Advance and Manhattan Project, as well as Atomic Edition Sunstorm expansions, console port stuff and AWO...

I think midi playback only breaks with game speed in a recent update, seems like a bug inherited from Woof. You can fix it for now by switching to a different midi player.

>>11181359
I consider the terms "partial/total" conversion to be pretty useless for this reason. Every mod is a partial conversion because it alters something in the engine, even if it's just map data. The line where it becomes "partial" or "full" is completely arbitrary. Unless it changes everything, in which case it's not really "converting" anything, it's just a new game.

Map knowledge is everything in Freelancer. If you haven't played the maps enough to have unlocked all the story missions you haven't played them enough. Note that I am not saying you should play with story hints (or any kind of hints and help while we're at it). It's perfectly possible to get all the stories by just playing the level and not being retarded.

A launcher would streamline that process, I use the Doom Launcher that has multiple methods to launch with presets and specific files.
In it, you can make multiple "source ports" that are all gzdoom, but launch everything with different files.
You can add files to specific wads, which gets remembered next time when you hit play.
Doom Launcher even records your stats, if you care about that.

You can also just make a shortcut on windows with extra launch options, added to the file path destination under properties, to launch with a specific file via:
-file SmoothDoom.pk3
then just drag your wad into that shortcut and hope that it works.

Also thinking about replacing the snake imp with another frankensprited version. I'd be taking Pirate Doom's dynamite imp and giving him the normal one's blue (denim) shorts. Even E2M1 is harder than E4M1. The only way I could see getting filtered by this if you never found the rocket launcher secret or if you can't function without medkits. The ammo and bonuses are pretty generous given how small the map is, and outside of the NIN secret, you have to contend with a single baron (that you no less have 10+ rockets for).
>>
>>11183220
You actually insane if you think that.

You have to watch your ammo much more carefully on E2M1 or you'll end up at M2 with 0 shells and a handful of bullets, it's a much stingier map. You can also easily get fucked in the secret room with the first caco and plasma rifle.
>just find the secret bro
It's not much of a "secret" when it's the only way out of the lava pit and you can literally see that there's a room there through a small opening. The only card this level plays is teleporting in loads of trash enemies. As soon as you realize you can just hug a wall and shotgun anything as it comes through a doorway, the gig is up and the only challenge left is a single baron that you can either cheese when he's down in the most or just kill him two times over with the 12 rockets you're given. It's an easy level.

I'm talking about those people who, for whatever reason, cannot ever acclimate themselves to Doom's bobbing. I know of some people who struggle with that who can then get used to it for a period, but if they don't keep it up and then come back to the game much later, they're at square 1 and need to acclimate themselves all over again.
Then there's those who simply cannot at all, they're never able to get used to the bobbing, and for a lot of those, being able to adjust the bob and sway to be milder, or outright turn it off if needed, will completely cure the motion sickness for them and they can play the game.

Then there's those people where this doesn't help, but what DOES help them is to use a crosshair. Adding a small dot or something to the center of the screen provides their eyes with an "anchor point," not so much for aiming (you don't need that with stock Doom gameplay anyway), but it puts an element in the center of the screen for their eyes to intermittently return to, and that completely solves motion sickness for them.

Oh. I find pronoun stuff annoying in modern games because it's done for cheap political points, but in this case it's just because the source port doesn't know if you're a guy or girl and takes the easy option of just using "them" instead. What's the problem with that?

>>
>>11184107
The use of Singular They in the English language predates modern gender faggotry by centuries, frequently being used to describe an indistinct party, like for instance the unidentified perpetrators of a crime, which could be a group of individuals. It can also be used with the intent of being polite.
In the classic sense, Singular They NEVER had anything to do with made up genders or respecting imaginary identities.

I don't see how the usage fits into the context in the image though, and furthermore its grammatically incorrect, the proper form should read:
>Player killed themselves.
>>
>>11184126
What even triggers this lol, just being in combat before picking it up?

>>
>>11183404
I noticed a pair of bugs: The Crooked Sheriff (WestShotgunGuy in the files) is harmless, he has an attack animation but doesn't actually fire anything.
Also, "TheOutsider" has his DropItem set to "shells" instead of "Shotgun", this can prevent players from getting a shotgun when the mapmaker expects you to get it from the monsters.

>>
>>11184145
Huh, you know I never thought about if the low health pickup message works for items that AREN'T health related. That might be worth looking into. If not you could always add a CVAR to enable an option for funny pickup messages like DAKKA did.

Some mods have it as well by default like High Noon Drifter
>>
>>11184195
Not sure if GZDoom has it, but DSDA and Nugget do as options for extended HUDs. Why you want that unless you're trying to be a streamer or a Doomtuber I don't know, but the option is there.
>>
>>11184195
This thing existed since 1998 and is presented in pretty much any Boom port direct offshoot and its descendants. Turns any adventure into a completionist chore though, where you must score the most points possible. Also, classic status bar is prettier.
>>
>>11184138
That's strange. It works in mine. Not sure what to do there. Unless you have a version from before that. I renamed Sheriff to Lawman.

I can fix that. It was like that in the original so I didn't touch it. Think I'll make his spawn more rare too. And looking at him I need to fix his attack sound.
>>
Continuous or pistol start? I'm thinking of playing Going Down and honestly it makes more sense going through it continuously, but most maps are made with pistol starts in mind...
