Hello. I've recently played Tunic and La-Mulana and both gave me newfound nostalgia and appreciation for old school game manuals and how they can integral part of the gameplay experience with useful clues and charming art. LM1 especially made me want to check out more of the old school cryptic proto-metroidvanias that influenced it so I picked up a bunch of those as they can seem intimidating with non-explained features. I thought it would be a good idea to obtain and read the manuals before playing them. And they looked cool so just wanted to share a few of them here.

Do you have any meaningful memories of game manuals? What are your favorites? Or most useful ones? Maps also welcome.

I thought this one was supposed to have the map, but English version doesn't; the Japanese version is very different and way more detailed, a lot of colorful art. Probably the case for a lot of manuals where studios cheaped out for the western releases?

I'm dowloading a bunch of manual sets for all of my favorite consoles, we never know when this stuff could get put down, same goes for ROMs.

Thanks, Apple and Nintendo.

I played Phantasy Star II recently and really enjoyed using the shitty hint book that came with it. The maps in it are fairly shit, but they get the job done and were fairly endearing. In general I think manuals (and other pack-in stuff like maps) are a huge part of the original games' contexts, and the majority of "how was i supposed to know how to do that/where to go!" are solved by reading the manual. It also helps to restore the ritual a little bit, as opposed to just rawdogging random games out of a full romset. That's just me though

I love manuals. There was nothing better than getting a new game and then opening that fucker up on the ride home to thumb through the manual, enjoying that fresh booklet smell.
There was also a very specific type of feel if you were riding home at night, trying to catch glimpses of a page as you drive under a street light.

Good thread, Anons.

I enjoyed the scanner's penciled in notes/hints on the maps, and the generally useless advice from the author. Definitely gonna be using any pack-in strategy guides in the future when I play JRPGs

I've been downloading some manual sets... but the Internet Archive has miserable downloading speeds for some reason...

What do?

I just want to mention here that if you're using Skraper to scrape the album art of your rom collection, there is a setting in there to make it download the manual as a PDF as well. Highly recommend it.

It’s really unfortunate nobody knows who did some of the art in the LoZ manual like the overhead shot of Hyrule

These collections on Internet Archive, do I have to download them one by one or is there a way to download all of them at once?
