My 12 y/o nephews leaving his laptop with me to do a bit of maintenance. He has an interest in older games and I was thinking of setting up a few classics for him as a little surprise. I know to throw in Doom, Half Life, maybe some Roller Coaster Tycoon, but trying to think of other good ones to throw in he may like. Suggestions?
>>
>>11325569
What kind of games does he like?
>>
>>11325615
Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, Among Us. Hope that helps.

He's up for anything really, though not sure his attentions fully there for something more slow burn like say, Morrowind.

>>11325621
Doesn't play Fortnite, likes Minecraft, actually makes Roblox games which is fun to see since I actually work in Dev. No idea on amogus
>>
>>11325569
Why don't you just attach a cup and ball to his laptop?
>>

why would some normie ass kid even care about old games?

>>
>>11325632
Probably because the new stuff is all complete trash and they only release maybe 1 ok game every other year now
>>
>>11325629
If he likes the voxel graphics in Minecraft he might enjoy the Catacomb 3-D games, Wolfenstein 3D, and Blake Stone. I guess there's also Team Fortress 2 which is kind of like a precursor to the more current cartoony battle arena games like Fortnite, not sure who is still playing it online though if anybody
>>
>>11325827
Actually installing TF2 to see how well his laptop handled source games. He's been playing HL1 on my PS2 and really liked it so I was gonna get him the HL series bundle, the source and goldsrc games

Already got him, bought him pic related for his last birthday, stocked it with a curated list of all the "classics" from NES to PS1 and he seems to get good use out of it. I'm mainly trying to set him up with the kinda retro games that a controller type setup wouldn't do well with
>>

I first discovered atari roms on a school computer so should be cool. 8 and 16 bit goodsets should be good I'd say.

If he ends up liking Doom, you can chuck him Ultimate Doom Builder and SLADE3 so he can make his own Doom maps.

Diablo 1 is a very easy game to learn and engage with, and games about killing the devil are time honored. You can even play it with him online, set it up with DevilutionX and you two can play the singleplayer quests in multiplayer.
Beyond that, throw in emulators for NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, and then a bunch of the better games you can think of, gift him a basic USB controller for playing those.

>>11325623
I don't see why that's your reaction, that sounds exactly like the kind of things I would expect a 12 year old to be playing these days. If anything, Minecraft's minimalist graphics has long worked as kind of a gateway drug for a lot of kids to be more open to less flashy and advanced visuals of older games.

It IS stupid when a kid says that Super Mario Bros. and Sonic "look like Minecraft," but they're at least playing the games. Consider also how most kids these days are deathly afraid of touching computers because of how they aren't like their precious phones, so this kid is on a better track already.

>>11325629
>actually makes Roblox games
Ok, then he should know that old games can be real treasure troves in that sense, what with the wealth of mods many have, and how many of them are very easy to mod yourself.
Doom is a workable one as it has a strong core gameplay, 30 years of mods, and is VERY easy to make content for, lots of great tools and there's all kinds of good guides for learning how to do all the necessary stuff.
>>
>>11326685
>>11326701
One of his favorite games is Left 4 Dead, and a couple nights ago when I asked him to pick a movie out to watch his choice was Dawn of the Dead. I'm not gonna give him anything actually disturbing like Silent Hill 2, but I feel like cartoonish gore's not exactly the most traumatizing thing he can see at this point.

>>11326067
I ain't gonna push him towards that stuff myself, but I am thinking of leaving a couple Doom and HL1 mods pre-installed just to maybe nudge him towards the idea. I find kids don't like being told to just do a thing, theyre much more into an idea if they have it themselves

>>11326450
It's appreciated. I don't see him much since this branch of the family lives several hours away, so since I don't see him often I try to make the visits worthwhile. I remember being his age having to visit family and being bored out of my mind visiting family, and I dont wanna be that family member lol
>>
I also have a nephew. i got him a nintendo switch with a few modern games.
I really think there is no way he will like older stuff that takes more imagination and patience, unless you make sure he's eating healthy and only drinking water. my nephew is overweight because my sister buys all kinds of shit food and treats. even though he has a switch, I still see him watching youtube or playing roblox.

Civilization II
C&C Red Alert

>>11325569
I'll list a few games that noone has yet:

I remember that when I was around 12, I played a lot of X-COM

I was also into (Heroes of )Might&Magic, but that series is such a clusterfuck and is pretty hard to get into, I wouldn't recommend it to a 12 year old
>>
>>11325629

Yeah I think 12 is a bit young for Half-Life, even aside from the gore, I feel like 12 would be too young to really appreciate the plot and content of the game. It also gets pretty hard/cryptic at some parts.

I've heard good things about the campaign for Counter-Strike Condition Zero. Not sure if it's actually good though, haven't played it yet.

like fucking what? that can mean anything. how long has he played a retro game? what are the ones he likes and doesn't like?
>>
>>11327889
12 yr olds arent that stupid
>even aside from gore
Were you ever a kid? Youre recommending a level-by-level game about antiterrorism you havent even played over a colourful game, complete with portals and low gravity platforming sections, about a scientist who kills aliens while “the man” is after him
>>
>>11327889
Half-Life's violence and gore is kind of cartoony. As for its plot and narration, that's not very important, but I certainly appreciated it at his age.
>>
>>11327889
>It also gets pretty hard/cryptic at some parts.
half life writing is kinda bad honestly. it has GREAT lore but the actual story is poorly written and paced. at least in 2, 1 is better with it
>>
>>11326048
how the fuck are you supposed to play PS1 games without shoulder buttons?
>>
>>11327913
Half-Life shows some violent deaths and some pretty graphic gore. Counter-strike isn't as violent or anymore violent than other games kids already play like Fortnite.

Most kids wouldn't admit that stuff would bother them, but if they don't already play games like that then they probably don't like it.
>>
>>11328102
barnacles and their gibs are just kind of silly. i think zombies are a little unnerving, though
>>
>>11328102
you telling me kids dont love obscene violence and gore like they used to? that would suck
>>
>>11328107
the barnacles and gibs are pretty gruesome desu, and the zombies are scary, but when i was a boy being put off by that would make you a pussy. shit i got nightmares from the sixth house in morrowind but that wouldnt stop me, nothing wrong with being scared by scary shit.
>>
>>11327889
>12 is a bit young for Half-Life

Tell that to him lol, hes been playing the fuck out of it on my PS2 during his visit and loves it, already up to Lambda Core. I wanna get him the PC version so 1: he has his own copy and 2: he can comfortably play the expansions and maybe even some mods, since he seems to have an interest in custom game stuff

As for the cryptic bits, I'm in my late 20's and trust me that shit doesn't become less nonsensical with age lol. I've been playing with him though and every now and then I'll help him get out of a tough spot (though thats mainly because PS2 port's kinda shit at letting you go to a previous save)

>>11328102
He grew up watching Walking Dead and actively seeks out horror (not FNAF/Poppy/etc slop, proper slashers/monster stuff), I think he can handle a scientist exploding into red chunks after clipping through a door

>>11328040
It has em

>>11327901
Holy shit you're actually gatekeeping a strangers 12 year old nephew thats amazing. But to answer, I don't know his specific favorites, but his mom/my sis tells me he liked playing the games available on NSO, and I've since got him the handheld emu in pic related which he plays a ton. I've also mentioned gamecube around him before and he mentioned wanting to try some for himself (I've since put Nintendon't on his Wii U and set him up with some essentials)
>>
I'd personally just say make a Steam Family group and give him access to your library but you do seem concerned about curating what he has access to, so that may be a bit difficult. Then again I think he could be added as a child which should give you better curation options I think
>>
>>11328152
Considered that, but not only are there games in my library I don't want him accessing (a combination of me having a couple NSFW games, and a friend and I having an ongoing game where we gif each other the most inappropriate steam games we can find), but his laptop's far from a gaming machine, and I could absolutely see him getting frustrated not even knowing which games will launch and what won't

Man I'm not sure why /vr/'s recommendations are so uninspired these days. Doom and Quake are so boring next to the modern games OP's nephew plays. Your nephew loves sandbox games obviously, and perhaps open world games too. I don't know what Roblox games he loves the most, but here are some classics he might enjoy.

>easygoing park sim where he could enjoy building stuff
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis
Zoo Tycoon 1&2
Deep Sea Tycoon + Atlantis Underwater Tycoon, my childhood pretty much.

>easy to play random sandbox games
Delta Force games (played it when I was 11 myself, it was so easy to get into and really fun).
Star Wars Droid Works, not sure how you could make it work in modern machines, but this game is extremely fun and very easy to get into as well.
Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, etc. Trust me, if he's smart enough to make Roblox mods, he's not too young to get into those games.
Black & White. Simply a classic.
Ghost Master

>other games
The Simpson's Hit and Run, there aint no little kid in the world who won't love this game.
Hard Truck Apocalypse. Underrated open world truck combat game.
Jimmy Neutron vs Jimmy Negatron. Dumb, but fun game with pretty creative sprawling level design.

Those games are great OP, he'll be open to just about anything you throw at him and give it a chance. I would listen to the people being legit in this thread, I think he'll really enjoy Rollercoaster Tycoon a lot if it tickles his fancy.
If he's capable of it, I would recommend installing Unreal Tournament (UT99). If his laptop has an AMD card you will unfortunately have to install a minor fix to it (easily findable).
I would also recommend the OG unreal while you're at it.
As for other swanky games, I would honestly slap some old point and click games that were intended for kids - there's nothing wrong with throwing Pajama Sam on there, regardless of age those games are unironic kino. Putt-Putt is and always will be my nigga.
Other games I played as a kid were Futurecop (that'll really bust his balls), Mechwarrior 2 (I'd recommend it heavily), and probably whatever you personally think would be best. Really stretch what you think is possible for him, old games really don't take up that much space, and you can easily make them just launch with DOSbox.
Since you also said he liked Goldsrc, I would recommend you play some Sven Co-op with him. Great bonding experience to play Toonrun and then you get to fuck around installing custom maps like Pizza ya-san and other ones.
Honestly, goldsrc and source are just fucking great. I think if you shop around for older multiplayer goldsrc/Source games that support bots (looking at you, The Specialists) you'll honestly be able to have some dank as fuck LAN parties with him. There's a lot of really fucking good times to be had playing games like UT99/futurecop/half-life with people.

Fallout NV too but that's probably only if he liked Oblivion
>>
OP here, final update since nephews back home now. We finished playing HL1 on my PS2 and he seemed to really enjoy it (I had to tell him about the crystals in the final boss but other than that he held his own in Xen pretty well), so I gifted him the rest of the series on his laptop (excluding Alyx ofc, it's just the source/goldsrc games). Along that I gifted him:

- Doom 1+2 (the modern release with all the extra wads in it)
- Doom 3 (bfg edition cause I felt he'd get frustrated with the flashlight controls)
- Duke 3D (eduke)
- Roller Coaster Tycoon 1+2
- Psychonauts (Win 10 release)
- Bioshock 1 (I know I'm pushing retro there but it feels old fashioned enough to warrant throwing in)
- Fallout 3 and NV (Also pushing retro but see above. Felt like it'd be easier as an introduction to that style of RPG as opposed to TES games desu since he already has an interest in shooters and post apocalyptic stuff.)

I know there's probably more I could have added, but one, I didn't wanna overwhelm him with choices, two, he had limited space and I didn't wanna hog too much, and three, this feels like a good variety of games to get him introduced to what PC has to offer. I feel like this should be enough to get him comfortable with exploring more stuff like this on his own once he's gone through these games. Was a nice visit.
>>
>>11333649

You really dont need to play 1 before 2 (theyre from 2 different eras and the plot isnt exactly complicated) but honestly 2 might be a struggle anyway. Thief would be a better jumping off point for Looking Glass’ games.

By the way if you really want him to experience Steam there should be a sale coming up with Halloween and the Valve bundle is usually discounted
>>
>>11333649
>Doom 1+2 (the modern release with all the extra wads in it)
This version is really scuffed and unfinished, besides stuttering and crashing, it has the censored .wads (as in they take out the red crosses on the medkits and remove the swastikas from the secret Wolfenstein levels).

Rather, take this pack:
https://litter.catbox.moe/7spkzy.zip

You know computers, you can set this up for him, and he should be able to figure out how to do the rest from there, assuming he finds a lasting appeal in the game, which he may or may not do.
>>
>>11334116
Ah, shit. I woulda just set up a sourceport with the wads for him if I knew that was the case. That said, the censored wads aren't that big a deal all things considered. It's unfortunately too late for me to do anything about it, he lives pretty far away which is why I wanted to make sure the visit was good, don't see him often.

Doom 3 did spook me when I was young, but it was also the kind of game which taught me very well that jumpscares will wear the fuck out if abused, I grew basically numb to them after about an hour or two of playing, because they were always there, and I remained armed to the teeth.

The Tick crawling out from behind the computer monitor was the only later game one which got me, because spiders scare me.

i'd be a bit annoyed if someone installed programs on my computer without me knowing beforehand, you should tell him or at least give him an idea that you're going to do that

Which is why you don't run Windows

If I could make a suggestion or two, give him a game like Left 4 Dead, Ace Combat 4, Scaler, aaaaand Blinx the Timesweeper.

Most people are NEVER going to be open to deal with Linux because they don't want to ever have to deal with compiling software, chase dependencies, run Wine, or using substandard FOSS alternatives for their software, they want to just install the program and go. One of the reasons Apple has done well is because it's in some ways even more straightforward than Windows.

Windows is hardly perfect, but it can be learned, and you can hack away bloat and change things to be less retarded with very little effort.
Valve seems to be getting some popularity with their prepackaged Linux based OS for the N-Gabe, and perhaps some day a better and more appealing competitor can spring from Valve's developments from there, maybe, but Linux as is will continue to only appeal to a minority of computer users.

>Why yes, I do like being annoyed because someone installed programs on my computer without me knowing beforehand. How could you tell.

I mean, maybe? It's either GOG installations or drag and drop source ports of games, nothing intrusive, I made sure there's nothing deeply rooted or tied to any kind of account to ensure removing a game would only take a matter of seconds. And considering a couple days before I did this he was telling me that he wanted to try more PC gaming, I feel it was worth the "risk"

>grrrrr zoomers zoomers zoomers, i hate them, i think about them all the time, I'M NOT OBSESSED

Report back if he's happy with them.

I get being annoyed with some things zoomers do, but if a kid exhibits sincere and serious interest in classic games, I'm all for giving him a hand and showing him some of the ropes, he'll figure out the rest as he goes if he likes it.

Original Quake
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Icewind Dale 1 and 2
Clive Barker's Undying
Morrowind

Also this might not be VR but an important sidenote: Place on the computer the complete series of The Greatest Story Never Told.

Nah when we got our first PC the guys that fixed issues (format PC, install hardware etc.) would always install some pirate games as a bonus and we loved it. I remember when I got a new PC some years later the dude from the store installed Crysis to show that it was good enough to run it.
Yes this is a 3rd world country
