>"The system went on to sell a worldwide total of 24 million units, including 16 million in North America; however, Microsoft was unable to make a steady profit off the console, which had a manufacturing price far more expensive than its retail price, despite its popularity, losing over $4 billion during its market life. With its initial retail price of $299, Microsoft lost about $125 for every system sold, which cost $425 to manufacture, meaning that the company would have to rely on software sales in order to make any money. These losses were further exacerbated in April 2002, when Microsoft lowered the retail price of the Xbox even further to $199 in order to further driving hardware sales."The Chad's at Microsoft gifted to the world a $425 powerhouse for only $199. Chuds came along and proceeded to pirate it blind, and now they are in their 40s complaining on online imageboards about how the game industry went to shit because making good systems and games that put the gamer first aren't profitable anymore. Lmao.

>>11329787The OG Xbox is an interesting console. It had PC games, but PC gamers weren't buying a console to play them on a console and it lacked the definitive PC game, Deus Ex, despite the PS2 version existing. Sony gamers weren't switching due to the fact Xbox had very little support from Japan, and the titles they released never made any sense. The console was legit carried by 2 games.. Halo CE and Halo 2. It's insane that the OG Xbox maintained life thanks to that 1 franchise and that Microsoft corrected the Japan problem with the 360.

>>11337141Yup, my neighbor had an Xbox that we played halo and halo 2 on, but that's really it. Playstation was where it was at
>>11334825Vendetta landing on GC but not Xbox is very unusual. The console itself wedged its appeal as a distinctly hardcore experience. For gamers who wanted to experiment with new ideas and technology. It got all these interesting sequels and versions of PC games, usually excellent ports like Max payne on xbox runs at a solid 60 almost entirely from beginning to end, except a drop during the Asgard Building where it tickles 40 or so. Even then that only happens in one room. This is in comparison to the PS2 version which runs unacceptably poor for a console that handles the far more impressive Devil May Cry at a locked 60.Microsoft offered something for all kinds of markets too. I'm into snowboarding games and Amped 1 and 2 are some of the best in the genre. Super technical and satisfying to execute in. A friend of mine who's into golf lavishes the Links series on Xbox, wouldn't surprise me if it's for the same reasons I love Amped. What it shared with the competition is one thing, most people these days talk about how it had the best multiplats (which it did to an extent) but its unique identity is far more interesting to uncover.

>>11337178I truthfully loved my Xbox. I know it essentially became my Halo machine in the end of its life, but man did it have some really great ideas and power behind it. I think Microsoft just dropped the ball in terms of software. Like, pic related. Imagine liking any of these titles on Xbox and then realizing that so many more entries are on the competitor's system. Xbox is also the only console that didn't receive a Resident Evil game; not even ports of 1-3 (which the Dreamcast got, but was old hat obviously).
>>11337361I have to disagree with you about the software. So many of the games that did land on there, especially after Live launched made the Xbox a totally unique experience. Free DLC, excellent online play and integration with other games. Having it at the time would have been a stand out affair but going back to it today? Everyone knows Splinter Cell looks better, but it also has exclusive DLC that's only on Xbox. There's so much worth playing on there.
>>11337375Such as anon? Not disagreeing with you, mind you, but I truthfully couldn't tell you. I just know a lot of killer games and sequels or spin-offs didn't make it to the Xbox, but I also know that Xbox had the superior hardware and superior online gaming service with LIVE.
>>11336935Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is worse on Xbox than Dreamcast because it's based on the downgraded PS2 version instead of the Dreamcast version. >>11337384As far as exclusives go (at least console exclusives), Both Amped games are stellar, Armed and Dangerous is a riot, Blinx 1 and 2 are slept on through titters of magazine taglines but are solid platform games once you get a grasp on them. Blood Wake is still a unique boat combat game, and Microsoft had a swing at flight combat with Crimson Skies, a truly impeccable game. Breakdown is well known these days but the melee combat is mechanical and satisfying. Challenging game too. Call of Cthulu has its best version on Xbox, the PC one being terminally buggy. Carve is by Argonaut and is this excellent blend of SSX and Wave Race 64, Conker has awesome online but a more enjoyable SP than the N64 original, Crimson Sea is a cool Japanese TPS game that got a sequel on PS2 only. Deathrow is a sick combat sports game, Dungeons and Dragons Heroes is one of many games that scratches that itch for more Gauntlet style games. Enclave is 3D Fantasy action by the guys who made Riddick, Far Cry Instincts is a really cool adaptation of the PC original with its own unique twists, Galleon is a Toby Gard game and has this free form and wild movement that fits his style for games. Gun Valkyrie is an intense TPS with lots of depth. Indiana Jones may as well be exclusive with how much it has over the PS2 version, same with the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring. Magatama is a cool Japanese only action game right up there with Otogi. Midtown Madness is chaotic fun that only gets better the more you play it, Outrun 2 and 2006 are well known, as is Panzer Dragoon Orta. Phantom Crash is lesser known but s very good Genki mech action game that got a PS2 sequel: SLAI. Phantom Dust is a Yukio Futatsugi deathmatch game with a cool deck building premise for battles and an eerie post apoc setting. Scrapland is a fun trip, Both Unreal Championship games rule, 2 especially, Whacked is a great party game.

>>11334825Sony had a nearly complete monopoly on developers during the PS1/PS2 eras because the competition (Sega and Nintendo) were making too many mistakes. It started with the 5th gen and kept going on all the way through the 6th gen. Sega released the Saturn (before PS1) that had hardware that was difficult to program for and they got retailers and some major devs angry for releasing too early. Nintendo had a system that was limited by its cartridge space. Sony had easy to use hardware, enough space (CDs), good dev tools and a lot of financial resources for marketing and buying the exclusive rights of games. When the 6th gen started Sega was the first to release their new console but had limited financial resources because of their commercially failed past projects. Nintendo wasn't so hot because many consumers and devs had not touched the N64. Microsoft was a newcomer whose console didn't sell well in Japan. Sony was the 2nd to release their console which had a lot of hype behind it because of the success of the PS1 it also had backwards compatibility with the latter. Sony also outsold everyone even if you'd combine their numbers. The rest is history. In hindsight there was no reason for devs to even release games on anything but PS2 as far as 6th consoles are concerned.

What are some examples of multiplats that are noticeably better on Xbox? Like any where you would find it kinda hard to go back to the PS2, GCN or PC counterparts? I know at a core level nearly all games look and sound better on Xbox due to Progressive Scan, cleaner video output and Dolby Digital, and most games usually have better textures and anti-aliasing, but at least from what i've seen, most just seem to be graphicsfag stuff that you would kinda have to squint between screenshots of different versions to notice the difference, or stuff that would have gone unnoticed on a 480i CRT back in the day. Are there any that make good use of the capabilities of the system to noteworthy improvement, or even have some gameplay elements downgraded on/upgraded from other versions? The biggest examples are "enhanced versions" of games like Genma Onimusha, THPS2X and Tenchu: Return from Darkness but i'd like to know somewhat more conventional instances. The Splinter Cell games are great examples of this too, with the Gamecube and PS2 versions having noticeably downgraded graphics and also levels cut down into several sections with loading times, instead of one big area. Chaos Theory might actually look and run better on PC but it's missing the Co-Op, and Double Agent is definitely best on Xbox since the PC version is the 7th gen one lol
>>11353735Ghost Recon 2? Although the PS2 version is a totally different game. Generally unless it's done like that or it's PC+Xbox only you aren't getting more than some nicer textures/lighting.

>>11348840It's an N64 style problem. The vaseline filter was software configurable. Last I checked there are some patches to fix this but there's no universal fix.
>>11353182>>11353174It depends on how you define when the collective Microsoft "wanted to" do a console. Because sure, the complete idea of a "DirectX Box" wasn't really a thing until the DC, but the idea of a living room set top box that would help Microsoft extend their market into the communal spaces of a house was a thing they had been toying with since the early 90s. But like all such concepts many MANY ideas form and die in planning stages before a proper product happens. The xbox happened because all those malformed ideas over the years all managed to come together in some fashion to push the idea forwards. And some of the failures helped keep the bad ideas away. A gaming console with internet support built in, xbox live and such happened, but the WebTV side of life was left to rot. No reason Xbox couldn't have had a web browser and a streaming TV thing but they (correctly) chose not to waste time and money on it. And they were definitely right because allowing the "TV" folk back into the meetings was a big bucket of cold water on the xbox one announcement even before they dropped the ball with activation.

>>11355158Sony's idea with the PlayStation was to supercede the PC as the home computer MS saw this as a direct challenge to their business and decided to give it a go themselves
Tanking hardware loss money and burning money on advertising is what giant corporations like Sony and a Microsoft are able to do, it's one of the bigger upperhands they have against video game companies like Sega or Nintendo (on top of owning CD-pressing factories, like Sony). But that doesn't make them good guys. Microsoft still imposed charging for an online service first and wanted to take consoles on a different (worse) route than the japanese. The place we are now is thanks to Microsoft and Sony.
