jrpgs during fall and winter are peak cozy
what games have you been playing lately? I am this far into Chrono trigger and I'm probably gonna to play superstar saga next
>>
I've been playing Lagrange Point for NES because the FM music (its an expansion audio game) interested me. Actual game is whatever, though. Basic spam attack combat, random encounters every 10 steps, using a basic attack drains mp for some reason,

I've also been playing Chrono Trigger for the first time. I just completed all the endgame sidequests and am about to beat up the final boss. This may be my favorite SNES RPG of all time, I wish I'd played it as a kid.

Just Moguri Mod (8.3, the newer ones have worse character models IMO). Everything is upscaled, 30fps, orchestral music, 4K widescreen so you can see parts of backgrounds not even shown in the original (I downsized that pic).
My favorite part is that it cuts out the pre-battle intros, and you can set a general speed and a separate battle speed to get the feel you like. And none of it messes with the music.

The creators would have gladly rather had more resolution to work with than what the PS1 offered. Hell, I even think the developers would have preferred it be an action RPG in stead of turn based.
I prefer it my way and will take a missing shadow for being able to see characters, weapons, and textures in detail. It plays more fluidly, too. I would not play the game on ps1 today, and I still have my ps1 copy.
Fuck "original vision," a game exists solely as it is in the player's mind. If you cannot override your cynicism with imagination then maybe jarpigs aren't for you?
>>
>>11335052
More detail is one thing, flattening the lighting and removing shadows that make the scene feel dynamic and realistic is quite another.

I'd say there is more to it than that when you factor in the weapons customization and the non linearility of the scenario at some point. Plus there are tons of characters to choose from and it has great graphical presentation.
I wonder if you'll find out the almost self-sustaining system I had going in the end game.

>random encounters every 10 steps
That's a low encounter rate by Famicom standard
>>
>>11335112
You wouldn't without a side-by-side.
I agree the shadow makes the scene look better (I am running an old version of the mod, and they claim to have corrected hundreds of visual things in the years since my version), but you don't notice when actually playing the game and the higher fidelity of everything else makes it a better experience overall to me.
I can actually see what a tonberry is shaped like. I can actually see the intricate patterns on the weapons, I can read text and signs that you never could on the PS1.
Anyway, it's almost time to get some beer and get through one of the worst parts of the game (Bran Bal) before doing Ozma and the flying castle Memoria.

Just because I want to ramble, see how the ending dungeon is an homage to that one north american poster for the original Final Fantasy? I think there may be some sort of anime that referenced this imagery lol.

I recently gave up on Tales of Phantasia because the encounter rate and slow combat was bogging it all down.

If you're up for something sort of October/Fall themed I highly recommend Koudelka for the PSX, fantastic voice acting and a decently fun little combat system.

Don't make the same mistake I did and try Laplace's Demon (Laplace no Ma). It's aesthetically very cool but slow paced and pretty dull.

If you think improving instrumentation is as simple as replacing one sound with another one, then you and your shitty HD EPIC REMIX versions of the originals are made for each other. Enjoy them. You should put some ENB ReShade raytracing bloom mods on the graphics too: after all, if they had access to the tech back in the day, they probably would've used it. Finally, just so you come out of this learning something: MIDI doesn't make any sounds, and all your favorite modern music, including your favorite EPIC ORCHESTRAL HANS ZIMMER movie soundtracks use MIDI in some capacity or other.

Yes, but unironically.
I think that FF9 screenshot looks trash, but I do actually like upscaling and widening the aspect ratio on games when possible.

For that gen I typically use downsampling with CRT shaders, but sometimes I think straight upscaling, like FF7 PC, looks great. I played through FF7 like that a month ago, and it really made the colors pop excellently on my OLED while looking good on such a big screen -- so it seemed pointless not to use the mods.
I think the recomposed tracks fit the fresher looks more, too.

It's all personal preference, though, of course.

>if it looks true to the original, why use it in the first place?
The original assets tend to look bad/jaggy/blurry at higher resolution, and using higher poly models or larger size textures that look very close to the originals is theoretically good and in the case of those screenshots is one of the few times it's been done right, minus the lighting. Fans did it better with FF8 as well, compared to the official remaster.

Checking back in, just beat the game and I really enjoyed it. My only complaints would be that the position-based part of the battle system was kind of half-baked and underutilized (especially once you can easily cast full-screen spells consistently about halfway through the game) and the difficulty in the last quarter of the game is too low for the most part. Other than that, it's practically my ideal JRPG in every way and definitely top tier among all retro JRPGs. I wish it had been more influential or got a sequel so that some of its less fleshed out or experimental gameplay elements could be expanded and refined in a more challenging game. All that said, I started on NG+ and look forward to playing more and trying for different endings.

>So what's the hardest JRPG out there?
Do you consider not knowing where to go and what to do hard? If not then I dont really know what to tell you. JRPGs are designed to get easier if you put in the work and improve your character.
>>
I started playing FFII PR again after running into how fucked the physical attack status effects were before the console update about halfway through originally and got annoyed with it, then found out the absurd encounter rate (which because of how stats work GBA and later has resulted in having fucktarded amounts of HP and evasion) is actually specific to this version. Unfortunately 22 of the last 25 doors I walked through being empty rooms and the shitty enemy variety presumably is not.

Wonder if there's a PSX romhack to change magic interference back to how it was in WSC, but playing through 70% of empty rooms the game again doesn't sound that immediately appealing and it sure is nice having magic interference actually displayed as an equipment stat.
>>
>>11337245
Hardest one I've played is probably Shinsenden on Famicom. You need to grind, a LOT (but fights can be super fast if you set to fastest speed) and even then it's still crazy hard and a single wrong decision or unluck draw will mean death. When you die you're back to your last save, too.

Deep Dungeon III was also challenging even after all the grinding

On average Famicom RPGs tend to be more challenging than what came after. It's probably also true for other late 80s and early 90s jRPGs on other platforms if not more so.

>>
>>11338043
There wasn't many released early in gen 7 and oddly enough they were all on Xbox 360, the console absolutely no one bought to play Japanese RPGs. This is honestly probably why Persona is even relevant today.
>>
>>11338084
Just lost all interest. Even Persona/SMT while having really cool lore/story and game mechanics, still just doesn't appeal to me.
Oddly, I wouldn't mind playing any of the FF pre X. Maybe it's some kinda crystalized nostalgia/familiarity at this point, but I wish I could add on new interest into this genre when I can't.
>>
>>11333272
Maybe Azure Dreams? It's not all the way life simmy, but that's part of the game for sure. I've only played the GBC version, but there's a PS1 version with a lot more content like that.

I've been playing Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest V for the first time lately. Absolutely loving them both. They're surprisingly well written games, even moving at times, very impressive for 30 year old jarpigs. The character designs are just incredibly good, too, and DQIII lets you have clowns and bunnygirls.

Red and blue are interesting because of the suburban setting with sci-fi elements mixed in. The battling is pretty simple though because the games are slow with handing out moves. Gold and silver feel like remixed versions of red and blue while also being sequels, so I would play those if you wanted more of the first games. The gameboy advance games feel pretty different in terms of world and gameplay, and honestly, I think they have more in common with non-retro pokemon than the gameboy games.
>>
>>11338482
Not to mention that the shift to HD development absolutely destroyed Final Fantasy's reign as the defacto JRPG in the west. Development time ballooned along with budgets, and Square went from releasing a new mainline game every other year to every five or six, filling the gaps with constant spin-offs and asset flips. They dilluted the brand so much at this point there's barely any connective tissue left, and every game might as well be its own series. Even FFVII Remake failed to meet expectations.

I was severely underwhelmed by Star Ocean. After Tales of Phantasia it felt like another step forward in taking everything out of SNES hardware but it's just so hollow content-wise. The plot is absolute nonsense if I recall correctly and the battles are really annoying after the fun arcade mashing of ToP. The skill mechanics are somewhat interesting and I guess novel but those have been done better in other games. Still, enjoy the experience.

Back when I was a kid they were some of the first games I emulated o zsnes and I recently replaced Chrono Trigger which got me out of a funk I was in last year. Maybe its time to replay Earthbound

I've got the PS4 versions of every FF game from I to X-2. I know it's probably not the ideal way to enjoy all of them but whatever. Which is most fun? When emulating/playing proper copies years ago I got as far as becoming Paladin in IV, going inside an evil tree in V, Terra becoming a magic ghost in VI, killing Barrett's machine gun arm friend in VII, no idea in VIII, Vivi getting taken underground in a weird village in IX. X I got to Seymour seething over something.

I find it hard to maintain momentum in longer games.

Playing SMT Strange Journey, literally just started it. I hate the design of the Demonica armour so much it's so fucking goofy.
