What are some of your favourite places in retro games?
I really like the area outside the Tower of Riddles in Paper Mario TTYD. It has a serene atmosphere right in the middle of a demonic dungeon.
Exploring this place for the first time is a feeling I wish I could somehow recreate.>you can never go back
This was my childhood.
>>11342487>licensed slopyou had a shit childhood
>>11342514You didn't play any licensed games as a kid?
>>11342514The first three Harry Potter games were pretty good, and had great music by Jeremy Soule.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJlWBGq-odYSadly this track wasn't in the PC version.
>>11342448This comfy lab. Somewhat chaotic and not intuitive at first, but preparing ingredients and making potions is pretty fun.
>>11342487The old Harry Potter games are very comfy, I played the fuck out of Chamber of Secrets on the ps2
>>11342514>zoomer tries to infer retro taste before he has had time to develop it.You'll get there, sport
>>11342487Damn is that pc? Looks amazing. I had the ps1 version and I'm actually planning to play it on my vita when I'm done with twisted metal head on
>>11342697>le zoooooomyou were playing this trash while I was poopsocking StarCraft and Halo and pumping fat stinky goth girls' ass cheeks every week. you are like little baby
>>11342718wtf you didn't even list some cool tryhard shit. Starcraft and halo are just as walmart as harry potter and kingdom hearts
>>11342730I was playing Eastern Mind in mental asylum and pumping my drugged roommate's skinny ass cheeks every day
>>11342730>S-StarCraft is basically just a licensed game too b-bro, it's just as gay as Harry Pottercope of the year
>>11342448I love this part in Castle of Illusion, the BGM is so relaxing and moody, the atmosphere's superb, normally I'd hate it because of the spiders... however they're so cartoony, I don't mind 'em. One of the best Genesis platformers in my eyes.
>>11342704I just got it from Google, but yeah it's the PC version. Actually the PC version of the first three games were made by different developers compared to the console versions, so it's worth playing them all. I grew up with the PC versions, so that's what I'm especially nostalgic about.
>>11342448The entirety of exploring old point n click adventure games(first person), like Lost Eden, The Day the World Broke, Starship Titanic and Journeyman Project.
>>11342758I mean yeah? Starcraft is kinda gay and harry potter is kinda good. They're both decent games
>>11343276>redneck space marines drinking beer and killing aliens is kinda gay>little effeminate British school children casting spells is mega hetero though brah>they're both decentlmaosorry you got stuck playing barnes and noble core trash of getting some actual good games.
>he's serious
I wanna go back, bros...
>>11343534I enjoyed this game but I never made it past the second boss, that worm thing in the toxic sludge, despite trying probably two dozen times over the years. I would always lose interest after that for some reason.
>>11343534Dare I say, kino?
Spent a lot of time in the demo sliding down the slopes, hanging from the pom things in the trees, jumping from the highest point into the pile of leaves below, pretending to hide in the leaves. I miss creating my own fun in games like that.
>>11342448Melee Final Destination and Starfox level (the big ship one)cs_assault and de_dustTFC 2fort and Hunted
>>11342742M-M-M-MONSTER KILL-L-L-L
>>11343534I play it every few weeks on my WiiU
>>11342532No.
>>11342742Damn it's crazy just how few polygons that thing had.
>>11342483Very true. The music still takes me back to that time in my mind, though.
>>11342704PS1 is the best Chamber of Secrets game imo. Pure kino.
>>11343534>return to Oozla>half of the cool creatures in it despawned permanently
>>11342448Vanilla wow Stormwind. Home.
Every screen inside Edea’s house (FF8) is pure sovl
>>11346004
i never really understood why so many people praise metropolis so much
>>11342740Yes that fucking park in the background just blew my mind as kid, I couldn't understand why it felt like a world continues on back there
i played a lot of point and click games on pc as a kid. my favorite was probably this one.
>>11342448
>>11342740I've always believed I would wake up here after dying.
>>11347549damn this is a great answer. that chill song that loops really seals the deal. I wish the main game was less of a slog or id replay this all the time just for the garden.but for me nothing in vidya will top the sheer soul/comfy/nostalgia of picrel
>>11342718>Halo
https://youtu.be/ZbbUv1hz6mE?si=q5-m9E6PlwbvxhRb
>>11342718Did you do sweet flips in your monster truck too? Btw I knew girls in like 5th grade who played starcraft, the campaign/custom games were just as normie as Mario for a while
Ah, Farthing, home.
>>11342448Crystal Egg Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear/Master System) is an oddly comfortable and downright beautiful final level to a difficult title, especially for Sonic standards, it's rough and this, the final level, manages to be one of the easiest, I'd say the only part that's a bit of a pain is right at the end, the final boss, because it's a one hit kill as you have no rings, BS I'd say, but it's fine.
>>11343536You never saved Red Ring Rico.... she's still out there anon.... she still needs your help.... Pioneer 2...
>>11344275more games need crunchy leaf pile physics
>>11345698Any cave in a pokemon game is a fucking pain in the arse>move one space>[BATTLE MUSIC]>get mouth raped by zubat again
>>11349993Just use repel
Metro city 100%Looks like a sick place to live - walkable, rideable, gorgeous views, at the base of the most epic mountain.
Descent :: Level 12 : Callisto Tower Colony
North Gustaberg from Final Fantasy 11, sure it's a pretty much a wasteland but the music is really nice to listen to on repeat.
>>11350351Damn... I still log in from time to time
>>11342748what game is this please?
Not breaking any new ground here, but as soon as you make it to Besaid, you know your adventure is about to start for real.
always found MDK's environs very relaxing despite how surreal they were
>>11342514a licensed game doesnt automatically mean its bad despite what your favorite youtubers tell you zoomie
>>11342448this is one of many of my favorite place in retro games
>>11351337you are joking right?
muh vibes
Peak comfy
>>11353669The demake massacred the vibes here. When I saw that the rainbow stairs were replaced with lifeless regular stairs I turned it off and returned it the next day. Unthinkable.
>>11342514>>11342532What does that even mean?
>>11353998The feeling of being disconnected from everywhere else was surreal. Pre-liminal. Perfectly executed.
>>11342483I never played the Spyro games but I've always liked how they looked especially the skies, it reminds me of an NES level I really like, the second level from Time Lord (an otherwise mediocre game). Again with that level it's mostly the area up top where the sky is visible but also the music. There's this style I can't quite pinpoint, a sort of medieval fantasy aesthetic but in a very childlike fairy tale kinda way, and I really am thinking it's the skies that do it, they often have these majestic hues, like purples, deep blues, auroras, all these often contrasted with the stone grey battlement spaces of a castle, in the case of Time Lord another castle peaking out of the clouds in the background. It's all so mysterious and comfy at the same time. The closest music I've found to capture the feeling is actually called comfy synth, a subgenre of dungeon synth. But I'm struggling to find other old games or media in general that capture the visual style. Is there a subgenre of fantasy this would fall under?
Traverse Town
>>11346361It sounds like the same feeling I had in the beginning of Mario 64 when Mario comes out of the pipe, and in Mario Kart 64 when you could drive up to Peach's castle. Melee also had some great shit like towns in the background if rainbow road and the zelda level.
>>11342718You've never seen a real goth, lil zoomie.
>>11351645Being cunty to someone for asking an honest question is something only really insecure people do.
>>11355669You're not allowed on this website unless you're insecure.
I would love to have a drink in this bar
>>11355610Brazil....home.
>>11355610honestly, do guys need anything more than this?
>>11355765Nope thats almost literally my house
>>11355752Ha! Nope. I wish the favela was this nice.
The shipwreck northwest of Seyda Neen, near the mouth of the river. When I play a thief/bandit type character, that's where I stash my fat loot.
>>11357296I like the boats and shipwrecks because so many of them have moon sugar, and I like to make my sugar stash as big as possible. It's actually a pretty decent "potion", and more fun thematically than other potions.
>>11357813This was the first game I ever remember playing that had an entire section dedicated to just playing video games and screwing around. It left a real impression on me.
>>11356520>2004>Ragtag group formed in capital city>Gets lost a few times, a few wipes but eventually clear it>Healer forgot to collect the quest item>Everyone stays for a 2nd clear, join their guild after>2024>Forming group in global chat channel>DPS fighting over loot priority on a ring>Healer won't join unless we skip the 1st half>Tank refuses to move without a summonTrying the re-release was a mistake, modern players are insufferable
>>11357856It was thematically relevant to, since the point was the enemy distracting you from your goal. I did end a lot of attempted playthroughs there because I had already spent another hour playing Gradius, or betting on horse races.
>>11342448I love this level in Lucky Dime Caper.
>>11342448I love the 2nd level in Return of the Sinister Six, it's got the best aspects of this title, how it's an open level design, without being cryptic, quite vertical, but not in a frustrating way when you eventually fall, it just feels nice, and finding the items gives it an exploration aspect that I really appreciate. I wish all of its levels were more like this the only other decent one in this regard is the 3rd level, but still not as good as this.
>>11354467games that were made with a license
>>11360771Isn't this the level that you can fall into a pit and hardlock the game, requiring a complete reset? One of the NES Spider-Man's has that.
Bandora in Radia Senki. It's been almost two decades since I played the game so I don't really remember what was up with this location but I just remember finding something eerily cozy about an abandoned town in the middle of an inferno.
>Footstep sounds on snow, moss and wood
>>11360840I think I get what you mean, but no, there's no hardlock that requires a reset, there's a pit that, if you fall into, it can be hard to get out of if you don't have a good grasp of the janky controls, and most people don't when playing this early on, as this is the 2nd level this means most just get stuck and give up, but it's possible to get out of it, it's just jank and difficult to pull off at first.
>>11360926This guy gets it. The sound design was so phenomenal in these old Black Isle games. Also, spent hours in pic rel just exploring and browsing the shops, talking to NPCs and just chilling in the inns, after I got out of the dungeon. One of my former AD&D group players killed a shopkeep in a LAN session there, when we were all stocking up and selling our stuff, because he thought the shopkeep was insulting his dwarf. Good times.

>>11342448i like upper playfields. i'm not fond of jets because i often forget i'm playing pinball in the time it takes the ball to leave them
>>11361290This. Up there with Zeal for me. Such a cool, magical kingdom. I loved this place.
>>11361292Google is so bad now I can't even find a map of Mother 1 what the fuck.I loved Mary's Castle too. Especially the music.https://youtu.be/-vxjeAdSHTs
A lot of places in Earthbound, specifically the first four main towns. I think my personal favorite is Threed both during and post-zombies. They're all very endearing and cozy in their own way. It's Pax Americana in game form. I remember reading an old interview with Itoi saying that he was inspired by the mid-century American sitcoms he grew up watching so I guess that shouldn't be a surprise.
>>11349987Why did i never know about that character?
>>11347549Yoosh
>>11353669https://youtu.be/oW5tZOk7Y2g?si=sGhjVQctJoq7KE6G
>>11361331The first four towns are by far the best parts of the game (although I do like the stuff after as well). I always tried to imagine what he was going for with each, as far as type of town, what/if real life American towns they're closest to being like, what region of the country, etc.
https://youtu.be/bjCi4eT7yC0?si=SFOfX8k2I0wXrC2_
>>11361331>all very endearing and cozy in their own way.Autumn and Halloween is my favourite season so I live autumn levels and towns. It seems kind of rare too despite how popular Halloween is.
>>11361524
I love anything by the water
>>11355484it looks like a legend of mana town

super comfy
>>11357920the difference between then and now is that you were a kid/teenager who didn't know any better with no responsibilities while you're an adult now with 20+ years of experience (on top of 20 years worth of documentation and optimization behind classic) AND adult responsibilities.keep in mind raiding in WoW and/or other "hardcore" MMOs is basically someone's weekend with a bunch of prep work in buffs leading up to it and if you fuck up or wipe you've effectively wasted that person's week and ruined their weekend.>>11361178i always liked the cities in guild wars 1 & 2 the best...>ascalon city (pre-sear)>lion's arch>kaineng city>droknar's forge>gandara>vabbi>divinity's reach>lion's arch (vanilla GW2)>palawadan>hoelbrak>new kaineng city...are my personal favorites.
comfiest city in vidya history 10/10 would live there
>>11362490>if you fuck up or wipe you've effectively wasted that person's week and ruined their weekend.Good.
>>11363420that type of attitude is part of the problem >>11357920 is complaining about.

>>11361526FF7&8 have a lot of cozy little scenes like this.
>>11342448I only play smw to chill in vanilla dome and star road
>>11365070Looks like Jet Set Radio
>>11364481It's from an old mid-2000s cyberpunk MMORPG/FPS called Neocron. I haven't played it since those days, but apparently it's still going on life-support with a small dedicated community. For whatever reason it never took off in popularity and the population was only ever a few hundred players per server. Many, many fond memories of it though.
>>11342483The most beautiful games ever imo
>>11365097you and me both, brother
>>11365097SMW has an extremely cozy overworld.
>>11354926>The feeling of being disconnected from everywhere else was surreal.NTA, but damn... I never thought like that. A perfect depiction of a childhood, to be disconnected from everything and not a single problem from the outside world can touch you. Then you have Twilight Town with that feeling of friendship and how the world felt orange back then.KH is amazing.
>>11365070>>11365128Jet Set Radio Future. Great Xbox exclusive that still holds up.
>>11365689The End of Time is my favorite home base in an RPG. I also love how the character themes kick in when you add them to the party.
I like the church in Hitman 2
I only just started Baten Kaitos for the first time but goddamn this game is beautiful and Im only at this tiny fishing village.
>>11354926>>11365560I got the impression from concept art that in a rough draft you were all supposed to be castaways and there was no mainland. We only see the inside of Sora's house in the main game. You can't actually see that island on the tiny Destiny Island in KH1. Also makes the whole sailing away on a raft thing and eating seagull eggs make more sense. But, I think I like how they made it more mundane and normal. Plus Kairi is still a (magic) castaway
>>11366461
>>11366463Theres a lot of cute art of them cooking and eating
>>11366461>>11366463>>11366468So cool.
>>11362802I spent quite a few hours in this a few years ago. I went on a dead-mmo spree and this was one of the few that stood out. A lot of the other zones felt boring though, too "sterile sci-fi" for me.
>>11367779Dead MMOs are uniquely haunting.
>>11367093Kh concept art is crazy
>>11367786>>11367779Is Worlds.com still alive? I used to love going there
>>11367915It's peak soul. You can see the Disney influence even in something that is just a draft for a draft.
>>11343534Is this PSO? Is it emulatable at all?
This is a commonplace game to pick, but all these years later I still feel an intense excitement and sense of adventure starting up Zelda 3 and going up through the early regions, especially the Eastern Palace area and seeking out Sahasrahla. It always feels like a real "event" to me, like it's not just me playing the game myself, but something that's happening that I'm a part of. It's a carryover I think of the nostalgia from when it was released and teased in magazines, bits and pieces at a time, young me staring dreamily at the shots and blurbs showing off the early areas in that great way old mags used to do, with fanciful text boxes that walked through it like they were going on the adventure with Link in real time. So every time I play myself I feel like that new sense of discovery that everyone is sharing is still "going on" and I'm participating in it.
>>11361186Guild Wars was such a weird game, in a good way. It's strange remembering how crazy Kaineng City felt back then and the long circuitous journey you had to go through just to navigate the smallest pieces of it due to no jump button. It really felt like you were lost in some ancient asian megalopolis. GW2 New Kaineng is such a pile of goddamn slop. All of Cantha, really. Hell, all of GW2. Ok HoT is pretty great if you play it without mounts, but still too new.
>>11342448Pretty much the entire world in Majora's Mask. The game makes tremendous use of the N64's color and lighting to evoke a place and a mood.
>>11370976Private servers are a thing
>>11342448I like quake 2, just in general, all the areas
Nice
