i use crt and original hardware for anything requiring precision\skill
i dont mind using flatpanels for more "casual" fun though

>>11362995
i have a rotating list of "favorites"
but a few heavy hitters i will always love
i feel like i go through phases;
sometimes i just want to credit feed through a cute-em-up
sometimes i want ONE LIFE TO LIVE and r-type\pulstar\viewpoint style hardcore dragon breed irem gameplay
sometimes i want something different like twinkle star sprites
sometimes i want to have a two-player challenge with my cute girlfriend (cuphead, hellfire, densetsu sapphire)
sometimes i want to practice becoming a bullet hell shmup god (dodonpachi dai ou jou, espgaluda, ketsui, etc)
sometimes i want to feel the pain of times passage and reminisce on the ones that never made it, never ported to ANY system, even though they are still hauntingly beautiful to this very day on crt, "namco: nebulas ray"

I'll go with Raiden. I like that it is a bit slow paced, music is good and for the most part you fly over very real looking areas instead of the whole game being in outer space or inside a flesh cave. I play it on a PS Classic with Raiden 2, a game I also like, it's great to play with 2 players as well. It's just a good simple shmup and I appreciate that.

TwinBee
Because it has top tier comfy graphics and music, snappy gameplay that has multilayer shooting and bell juggle, good difficulty curve and also it's great to play with a friend or a girlfriend.
And it also spawned the whole cute em up subgenre and the TwinBee series itself.

Battle Garegga.

Stage design, hitbox size, bullet speed, aesthetics, scoring and ranking systems. It strikes a perfect balance between dad shmups and bullet hell, throwing a ton of shit on the screen without devolving into full blown danmaku style pattern dodging gameplay. Every stage is distinct and they're all well designed, which makes it more replayable than other shmups. I've played the first three stages hundreds of times and they're still as fun as ever.

I also enjoy Raiden DX and Batsugun, but not as much.

The appeal is pretty much getting gud by doing a lot of practic. Nobody starts these games by putting one coin in and casually beating the TLB while getting a WR score on top of that.
DOJ Death Label took a decade for anyone to post a single clear, for instance.

I wonder how many people who play shmups are people like me who only beat them through credit-feeding. They just require too much focus that I can't manage to give. The hardest one I've managed to beat legitimately is Hellsinker, and holy hell that was satisfying.

I've played Judgement Silversword for 20 hours now. I can beat it on Easy no problem. I can beat it on Normal if I have ten lives and I continue once or twice. I can't beat it on Hard. It's simply impossible for me -- even with credit feed. I will never be able to beat it on Hard legitimately.

I've never been big on SHMUPs, but lately I've been trying to get into them more and I've really been enjoying Sonic Wings Special. I'm getting hard-filtered by the last stage in every route though. Haven't managed to finish one, even with infinite continues, since they reset your progress for that level. :(

I'm 1-alling these games in order, and it's funny to me after Donpachi + DDP that the series transitions into waifucore (not complaining). Almost through DDP now (i am noob), stage 5 is coming together but getting a run where stage 5 + 6 go smoothly is still hard. Just gotta get used to this bullet count I guess, this will definitely be both my hardest 1CC and first danmaku 1CC outside of novice mode shit

Have fun, the series is pretty cool even if personally the first game (Donpachi, not DDP) isn't really my favorite at all. I started at DDP for the 1ccs.
Yes I also am not sure why CAVE decided we have the element dolls/daughters now, maybe they wanted to stand out from the typical military aesthetic used in any other shmup at the time? At very least a tiny bit since you only really saw the dolls in DOJ at the selection screen then at the ending sequence.

Resurrection went a little harder by making you fight revived dolls as the big daughters mechas, and then SDOJ pulled all stops with a lolibachi on top of constant anime girl voices and portraits around the screen. Plus the dolls themselves drive the ships I believe? I haven't played SDOJ yet but going to try eventually, I'm sure you know why. Check which console I'm supposed to own, ffs CAVE.

I only ever managed to 1CC a couple of them (Lords of Thunder PCE, Alltynex Second), but I'm also not a huge enthusiast of the genre so I don't feel compelled to bash my head until I get good enough at them to 1CC (also I suck in general at vidya). My only regret is never have been able to 1CC Gokujou Parodius, the later stages just own me no matter what. I'd say that 1CC isn't strictly a requirement to count as a clear, but there's a difference between using one continue and just credit feed until the game gives up.

That's a minimum requirement before you get into scoring/additional loops, if you still can't 1cc on whatever is the intended difficulty, it only means you are still a little too new to the game and should play more.

if you're moving with you're right hand anyways, why not use the directional keys? I assume you're not also trying to hit shoot/bomb/etc with that same hand as well.

My direction keys are smaller/less spaced, IJKL is more comfy. I very rarely use them in any game, not just shmups.

>What's your favorite retro shmup?
I'm still pretty new to the genre, but so far my favorites are Perfect Cherry Blossom and Espgaluda.
>What makes it your fave?
There's something about the thrumming music and changing scenery while fighting a war in the open sky, half dogfight and half dance, that I find achingly beautiful.
Any game that can make me feel that way is guaranteed to be one of my favorites, and both those games do.

I almost had it. Did a full run chained through stages 1, 2, and 3. I'm actually surprised I made it this far despite of not playing Guwange for about 3 months.

DDP is sovlful as fuck. Resurrection especially, look up stuff like the Ketsuipachi mode.

Guwange is the only Cave game I could legit 1cc. There is just something about it and the 3-segmented HP bar with possible score recovery that it makes it so much more fun and easier even compared to something like Espgaluda.

How popular were these games really back in the day? Did they actually influence console sales or did most kids see them as slop?

I remember as a kid I did enjoy Super R-Type although I also found the game to be extremely difficult. The genre as a whole is something that I thought was fun but also not one I would really be super hyped for if that makes sense. Its a genre I have come to respect a lot more much later in life even though I still haven't played an absolute ton of them.

From what I could gather both going purely by memory and reading interviews with the devs, they were one of the most played genres second to fightans in arcade circles, especially in japan obviously. I think they eventually fell a little when something like DDR was introduced.
They were designed very well to be engaging in their context, but once we moved onto home console they lost a lot of their appeal for the masses.
>>
>>11384254
Shmups were absolutely huge back in arcade days. If you read developer interviews you'll see that they often talk about the issue of dealing with an excessively hardcore and obsessed fanbase, which is why they had to come up with so many complex ways to increase the difficulty of their games.
Some of them even talked about players infiltrating their headquarters to see the games before everyone else and write notes to beat them.
Shmups have been an incredibly remunerative genre until the industry shifted in a different direction, if they weren't Konami wouldn't have produced so many during the 80s and 90s.
I recommend you check out https://shmuplations.com/ you will gain great insight.

Are there any mods or romhacks of 3D space shooters that make it into a Galahad game or any other shmup? I wish there would’ve been a fully 3D shmup which is why I’m asking; not 2.5D shmups. Closest thing is rogue squadron is what we have
>>
>>11386487
Galaga* not Galahad lol.

If what you're asking for is an experience similar to a danmaku game, but in 3D, then you're looking for the "Descent" series of games published by Interplay and its spiritual successors.

Don't use your laser that much, just kill enemies with shot and mid and big enemies with laser
>>
Retarded question but how do you pronounce Espgaluda? Is it E.S.P Ga-lu-da or Ehsp Ga-lu-da

Took me a while to realize it but yes trying to laser as much as I normally do but with B-S was an issue, so I eventually solved the stage by just not doing that and playing with the shot until a turret appears.
This is so much worse than going from Type A Strong to Type B Bomb in Resurrection, in fact I got a 1-ALL pretty quickly there. But in DOJ I'm nowhere near getting 1-ALL with anything that isn't A-L

R-Type Leo has stuck with me for a good while. It's just so weirdly different to other R-Type games with a much more funky, fun loving atmosphere. Almost like a utopian bend.

Why the fuck is this mode only on phone? The soul is absolutely off the charts but it can't make me buy a goddamn iPhone.
Alright DDP Resurrection is objectively the best in the series, hands down.

So do you shmupbros on here consider Thunder Force 4 to be a top tier shmup or is it overrated? Is it at least agreed that the soundtrack is godly? Been wanting to play it again. Didn't it get a remastered version?

Now try the arcade version. If you can clear it on SNES surely you can also do that.
