What's your favorite retro shmup? What makes it your fave?

>>11362995>What makes it your fave?girls, flashiness, quintessential MD aesthetics/sound and it's relatively accessible (I'm a cashul)
>>11362995The shmup stages in Guardian Legend are nuts. You're flying at fucking light speed, it's so insanely hard to keep up and they're all like that. Not a single one is easy.
>>11362995>What's your favorite retro shmup? What makes it your fave?I'll go with Raiden. I like that it is a bit slow paced, music is good and for the most part you fly over very real looking areas instead of the whole game being in outer space or inside a flesh cave. I play it on a PS Classic with Raiden 2, a game I also like, it's great to play with 2 players as well. It's just a good simple shmup and I appreciate that.
>>11363137trouble shooter is basedmy recs for this thread are gg aleste 2 & 3
TwinBeeBecause it has top tier comfy graphics and music, snappy gameplay that has multilayer shooting and bell juggle, good difficulty curve and also it's great to play with a friend or a girlfriend. And it also spawned the whole cute em up subgenre and the TwinBee series itself.
Thank you God for Battle Garegga and Darius Gaiden
raiden 2 because i used to play it at my pizza place so much. the sound fx and graphics were incredible. i loved using that purple homing laser as a kid even though its not ideal usually.

Detana!! TwinbeeRecently fell in love with this one!
>>11362995>What's your favorite retro shmup?Battle Garegga.>What makes it your fave?Stage design, hitbox size, bullet speed, aesthetics, scoring and ranking systems. It strikes a perfect balance between dad shmups and bullet hell, throwing a ton of shit on the screen without devolving into full blown danmaku style pattern dodging gameplay. Every stage is distinct and they're all well designed, which makes it more replayable than other shmups. I've played the first three stages hundreds of times and they're still as fun as ever.I also enjoy Raiden DX and Batsugun, but not as much.
>>11362995Life Force
I've been playing Judgement Silversword a lot lately. It's v fun but the final boss is such a dick, especially on Hard. And I don't even mean the secret final boss, who's probably an even bigger dick.
This genre is what made genesis beat snes for me back thenI still think the same now. Snes is overrated to me
I have fondness for a pretty basic one called Vapor Trail because I had it as a kid. I never beat it, but the levels bring me back.Besides that, I think either the Parodius or Twinbee games are my favorite shmups, specifically Gokujou and Yahho!
>>11362995Not a huge shump guy(i like the genre but suck at it) but I really dig Thunderforce IV. Gorgeous game with a kick ass soundtrack. A top ten Genesis title for sure.
Was about to do a thread but since there is one already...This is AI, she wants /v/ and /vr/ to play a shmup game together.
>>11362995none of them, i can’t git gud, i can’t find the appeal, therefore i can’t have fun.
>>11369669The appeal is pretty much getting gud by doing a lot of practic. Nobody starts these games by putting one coin in and casually beating the TLB while getting a WR score on top of that.DOJ Death Label took a decade for anyone to post a single clear, for instance.
I wonder how many people who play shmups are people like me who only beat them through credit-feeding. They just require too much focus that I can't manage to give. The hardest one I've managed to beat legitimately is Hellsinker, and holy hell that was satisfying.
>>11369714It's not "beating" if you credit feed because you literally cannot possibly lose. But sure, that's a way to practice until you eventually just don't lose all your first credit lives and that's your 1cc.
Blazing Lasers for the Turbografx-16.
>>11363002What a cool little stick.
>>11369714me.I've played Judgement Silversword for 20 hours now. I can beat it on Easy no problem. I can beat it on Normal if I have ten lives and I continue once or twice. I can't beat it on Hard. It's simply impossible for me -- even with credit feed. I will never be able to beat it on Hard legitimately.
I've never been big on SHMUPs, but lately I've been trying to get into them more and I've really been enjoying Sonic Wings Special. I'm getting hard-filtered by the last stage in every route though. Haven't managed to finish one, even with infinite continues, since they reset your progress for that level. :(
>>11369754You know the answer in your heart anon. Play that last stage every day, at least once. Even for literally 5 minutes. Try to not skip too many days however.

>>11373183Wow rude, but I get to say the line at least. Ahem. This is Shotia from Dodonpachi, she wants you play a shmup game about angry bees and chaining.
>>11373185I'm 1-alling these games in order, and it's funny to me after Donpachi + DDP that the series transitions into waifucore (not complaining). Almost through DDP now (i am noob), stage 5 is coming together but getting a run where stage 5 + 6 go smoothly is still hard. Just gotta get used to this bullet count I guess, this will definitely be both my hardest 1CC and first danmaku 1CC outside of novice mode shit
Pic related.>Why?First game I could play duo with my dad. We also had R-Type Delta, but that was only single player. I love my dad.
>>11373423Have fun, the series is pretty cool even if personally the first game (Donpachi, not DDP) isn't really my favorite at all. I started at DDP for the 1ccs.Yes I also am not sure why CAVE decided we have the element dolls/daughters now, maybe they wanted to stand out from the typical military aesthetic used in any other shmup at the time? At very least a tiny bit since you only really saw the dolls in DOJ at the selection screen then at the ending sequence. Resurrection went a little harder by making you fight revived dolls as the big daughters mechas, and then SDOJ pulled all stops with a lolibachi on top of constant anime girl voices and portraits around the screen. Plus the dolls themselves drive the ships I believe? I haven't played SDOJ yet but going to try eventually, I'm sure you know why. Check which console I'm supposed to own, ffs CAVE.>>11373426Holy fucking based. Remind me to play these, I saw them on /v/ quite a lot and it looks like the devs had fun throwing whatever they thought it will be the most entertaining both in gameplay and surreal dialogues.
>>11373447>Remind me to play these, it looks like the devs had fun throwing whatever they thought it will be the most entertaining both in gameplay and surreal dialogues. As a kid with no grasp over the English language, it was surreal to play Castle Shikigami. It's so uniquely japanese. Also the music is amazing.
>>11373482>Also the music is amazing. That's true for so many shmups. Blessed genre in terms of OST.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpCL9KsoYbs

>>11373498I believe I have heard this before, still on /v/God I miss the Shikigami posters, one of them posted this girl due to her absurd dialogue lines, the other casually dropped a 1cc a little less than a week of the last game plus 1miss for Ketsui's TLB for some reason.
>>11373513>I like girls, but now, it's about justice!
>>11373519Why was that so badly translated anyway?
>>11373525Published in English on the PS2 by a budget games company, and on GC and Xbox by a... Japanese telecom company.I actually didn't experience the meme dialogue and voice acting because all voice acting was removed from the PAL version.
>>11373543>pal versionI have heard about the Mobile Light Force incident but that's a new one. At least a little more accurate.Give me some time to put down Resurrection once I realize I will never beat the laser wheels in stage 5 for loop 2 requirements and I might try this series out finally.
>>11373549I should really play more shmups. I've only played that one, R-Type Delta, Final 2, Ikaruga and a bit of Kokuga. And also some 1942 but that doesn't count. What's a good one for someone who doesn't enjoy torture?
>>11373558>And also some 1942 but that doesn't countI'd count it.>What's a good one for someone who doesn't enjoy torture? You have played Ikaruga and you don't enjoy torture? Anyway ever tried the very first Gradius?
>>11373565>IkarugaPlayed doesn't mean finished.>ever tried the very first Gradius?Nah, I've played a bit of Parodius though. I've heard good things about Dodonpachi DaiOuJou and Radiant Silvergun, are those alright?
>>11373569>Nah, I've played a bit of Parodius though. iirc all Parodius games are harder than the first Gradius so you are more than ready.>I've heard good things about Dodonpachi DaiOuJou and Radiant Silvergun, are those alright? Both good for sure, but DOJ in specific is a particularly hard game. However if you beat it you will make this girl proud so it's worth it.

I'm a Touhoufag so i suck at shooting games. I can 1cc pretty much any Touhou game on normal, and some on hard. Are there any good retro shooting games that would fit my skill level?(I refuse to play on easy modo)
>>11373912Darius Gaiden, Hishouzame, Outzone, Batsugun Special version are some good arcade ones that aren't super hardCompile games like Soldier Blade, Spriggan mk 2, and MUSHA are pretty long and feel different as a result of being console shmups but are fun in their own way. Lots of bombing. Also difficulty select
>>11362995what are some easy entry ones? Never got into this genre
Don't look for easy games, figure out a practice routine you are comfortable with instead. This genre thrives on difficulty, although only a few are really insanely hard. And it's almost all CAVE
>>11373647The strongest controller of them 'em all.
>>11369714I only ever managed to 1CC a couple of them (Lords of Thunder PCE, Alltynex Second), but I'm also not a huge enthusiast of the genre so I don't feel compelled to bash my head until I get good enough at them to 1CC (also I suck in general at vidya). My only regret is never have been able to 1CC Gokujou Parodius, the later stages just own me no matter what. I'd say that 1CC isn't strictly a requirement to count as a clear, but there's a difference between using one continue and just credit feed until the game gives up.
>>11374279>I'd say that 1CC isn't strictly a requirement to count as a clearDon't make me post the cold-stare DDP doll so early. That's a minimum requirement before you get into scoring/additional loops, if you still can't 1cc on whatever is the intended difficulty, it only means you are still a little too new to the game and should play more.
>>11374219>laptop>not proper keyboard and mouse

>>11374307That laptop keyboard has seen more clears than you ever will.
>>11374395>keyboard>MAME>autofireNone of your so-called "clears" even count.
>>11374638Nor do yours, unless you own the cabinets. Not that you have clears in the first place lole, no one who matters gives a flying fuck about the input device, whether you are emulating, and certainly not autofire of all things.
>>11374649The cabinet also has to physically be in Japan to count.
>>11375945>he didn't personally fly to Japan to play the cabinet in an actual arcade>he didn't have an audience watching over the run, which included people recording it and CAVE employees >he didn't record his high score with his unique initials>he didn't receive a roaring applause for beating the WR, and given a life-sized Shotia doll(because if you played as anyone else it doesn't count) as reward from the original character designerYou did not 1cc DOJ.
>>11362995>What's your favorite retro shmup? You posted it.>What makes it your fave?I love how big the map is, all the weapons you can get, the "Labyrinth" and "Dungeon" modes you would go into, I could go on. I also love all the art it has, both official and unofficial.

I find myself going on 1-3 day Batsugun benders pretty frequently at this point, even if the scoring is so simple. Awesome game

>>11381367Guwange is the only Cave game I could legit 1cc. There is just something about it and the 3-segmented HP bar with possible score recovery that it makes it so much more fun and easier even compared to something like Espgaluda.
>>11362995How popular were these games really back in the day? Did they actually influence console sales or did most kids see them as slop?I remember as a kid I did enjoy Super R-Type although I also found the game to be extremely difficult. The genre as a whole is something that I thought was fun but also not one I would really be super hyped for if that makes sense. Its a genre I have come to respect a lot more much later in life even though I still haven't played an absolute ton of them.
>>11384254From what I could gather both going purely by memory and reading interviews with the devs, they were one of the most played genres second to fightans in arcade circles, especially in japan obviously. I think they eventually fell a little when something like DDR was introduced. They were designed very well to be engaging in their context, but once we moved onto home console they lost a lot of their appeal for the masses.
>>11384254Shmups were absolutely huge back in arcade days. If you read developer interviews you'll see that they often talk about the issue of dealing with an excessively hardcore and obsessed fanbase, which is why they had to come up with so many complex ways to increase the difficulty of their games. Some of them even talked about players infiltrating their headquarters to see the games before everyone else and write notes to beat them.Shmups have been an incredibly remunerative genre until the industry shifted in a different direction, if they weren't Konami wouldn't have produced so many during the 80s and 90s.I recommend you check out https://shmuplations.com/ you will gain great insight.

>>11386487Galaga* not Galahad lol.

Retarded question but how do you pronounce Espgaluda? Is it E.S.P Ga-lu-da or Ehsp Ga-lu-da
>>11386831Took me a while to realize it but yes trying to laser as much as I normally do but with B-S was an issue, so I eventually solved the stage by just not doing that and playing with the shot until a turret appears. This is so much worse than going from Type A Strong to Type B Bomb in Resurrection, in fact I got a 1-ALL pretty quickly there. But in DOJ I'm nowhere near getting 1-ALL with anything that isn't A-L
>>11387132I say the latter btw. It's written as a single continuous word.
