Post examples of licensed /vr/ games featuring bizarre interpretations of the source material, be it visual, tonal or gameplay-related.
>>11373210In fairness1. S1 Simpsons is bizarre2. This game was made by some Japanese guys who likely had not seen the show in a language they understood
>>11373210If I had to make a Simpsons beat em up this is probably exactly what I'd come up with. If I had to do a Seinfeld beat em up it would just be the 4 of them, digitized sprites like mortal kombat, walking the streets of New York, fighting random characters from the show. Newman would have an abobo type role. Soup nazi would be a stage boss, set up like whack a mole, 3 of him pop out, 2 fake, if you hit a fake one you get hot soup thrown on you. You could have stages like Jerry's apartment and the diner, despite them being small in the show they can be the longest levels in the game.
>>11373210I played The SImpsons Arcade Game recently and wondered what it would be like if it was made nowadays, since there's a lot more characters and references you could have in the backgrounds.
>>11373210Marge had a huge ass in this game for some reason.
>lets put this triceratops enemy on the cover>is he in the game?>no
>batman uses a guni would imagine they just shoehorned the batman ip into what was originally a different game
>>11373368There was a mobile version, but you could only play as Homer.
>>11373341Never have I thought about a seinfeld video game but now I really wish they made one.
>>11373341Your post reminded me of this post I managed to find again in the archive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJMdfUBNHUs
>>11373403come to think of it, a lot of the retro batman games are basically run and guns
>>11373368The Simpsons was never even a popular show in Japan either
>>11373210IIRC, this game was developed before the actual card game rules were set. As a result, FM and its sequel Duelists of the Roses are oddballs in the franchise, with rules and gameplay unique to them.
>>11373285>1. S1 Simpsons is bizarreYeah there was a lot of elements of Life in Hell in there still. S1 into 2 was a whole different beast so it's weird to see games and other material that where based on it.
Universal Soldier which was basically a sprite-swap of Turrican 2 with a few different levels and giant Dolph Lundgrens.
>>11373560It's a good job Matt Groening was replaced with writers who could actually write comedy from series 2 to series 8.
>>11374093I don't know about Matt Groening's comedy but S1 of Simpsons is the comfiest shit, it's just different from other seasons, but not in a bad way.>>11373396I think there were consistently putting Triceratons on covers without actually having them in games. Still, TMNT on NES is fine example of what this thread is about, enemies were as bizarre as possible (but only for a cartoon series; after Archie's comics, those seemed more natural)
>>11373210>Fever DreamsQuite literally
>>11373210
>>11374101It gets even better: this started out as a Bobby's World game
>>11374203Somehow this makes more sense, given that Bobby was a quite imaginative kid.Kevin, on other hand, just don't belong there, even if it's a dream
>>11373341>>11373210Tim Taylor fighting a velociraptor with a chainsaw
>>11373210>You know Winnie the Pooh? What if we made a kid-friendly horror game out of it?Seriously, just listen to the OST and tell me that it belongs in a fucking Piglet Movie tie-in game.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPOSgDijVpg
>>11373285Simpsons was dubbed in Japan.
>>11374210Is that the level where Piglet wanders through the grated otherworld forest after hearing that siren and fights Pooh's mummified corpse?
>>11373396SEYMOUR! THE FANBASE IS ON FIRE!
>>11374209Always wondered if this was some other game that was just reskinned into an American tv/movie game like Yo Noid. The kazetacci chainsaw really makes me think this was some ninja roaming around a dinosaur world type game in Japan.
>>11373392
>>11373403Ackshyually he did use a gun in the earliest comics.
>>11374501No, mother - it's just an appeal to the dinosaur zeitgeist.
>>11374210Winnie the Pooh was always horror, remember the huffalumps and woozles?
>>11374210Piglet's Big Movie? More like Piglet's Big Movement, as in a bowel movement! What a load of cockadookie buffalo diarrhea dogshit!
>>11374097S1 had this bizarre sense of melancholy about it that I really liked and miss. I think that's what really helped it stand out from the current trend of family sitcom rather than it's sense of irrelevancy and "edginess." Characters lost. They were depressed. They weren't what they wanted to be. But that didn't mean they also weren't satisfied in their way. Things weren't great but they could also be worse and they found joy in that middleground.
>>11373341I imagine Seinfeld would be a point n click or something like the waynes world platformer.
>>11373210My favorite sidescollers/snes games, but it's like the heavy metal version of the IP.
Panther Goes To Hollywood bro reporting in
>>11374093Matt Groening didn't wrote 1/13th of the s1 episodes, the Simpsons Christmas special. If you think that's bad writing you're a faggot, which is bad since you're obviously already a know nothing zoom zoom
TMNT on NES was based on the first three episodes of the 5 episode pilot miniseries, and a bit of the 5th episode. It had a bunch of enemies that made no sense even in-universe and were never in the cartoon or comics. It also provides a "what-if" about a different ending to the 5th episode as the ending of the game.Talespin on NES is a complete corruption of the cartoon. In the cartoon, the Sea Duck that Baloo flies has no guns. His only way of dealing with the pirates is to run away, or out-fly them, or hit them directly with his plane. The Sea Duck not having guns of any kind is actually a minor plot point in one episode where someone hijacks his plane and gets captured because he didn't realize the plane was unarmed. In the game? Yeah, you have a gun and fly around shooting the shit out of the pirates.Krusty's Fun House on just about every platform doesn't make any sense either, unless you know it was just a reskin of some Amiga game. Krusty personally dealing with a rat infestation instead of just throwing money at the problem? Right. Would have made more sense if you played as Bart, volunteering to help out Krusty.
>>11373210tbf when you only have like a season and a half a material to work with, it's gonna turn out pretty fucking wierd.
>>11373538>IIRC, this game was developed before the actual card game rules were set.Ditto with the Duelist Kingdom part of the manga.
>>11373396tbf those dinosaurs are in the comics, they just didn't put them in the game because.....shrug?

>>11375080And this is how SuperSponge was madehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36ACKZn_-Kw
so fucking weird
>>11374203>>11374206Actually it started as a Home Alone game, then they changed the license to Bobby's World and then it was cancelled.
>>11374203dang he looks like kid paddle
>>11373210that shit was fun, especially at the arcade with a couple of friends
>>11374774Didn't someone try to make a legit Seinfeld point and click, and ultimately got denied the license, so it just silently died? Shame, could have been reworked into something Seinfeld.
>>11375446Seinfeld inspired*
>>11374974You probably think the early Homer illustrations and voice are good too. You are gay
>>11374210Kek this wouldn't be out of place in a Silent Hill game
I think rental factor adds to the "fever dream" emotion, you'd rent a game, play it a lot in the course of 2 or 3 days (sometimes just 1 day) and then maybe never again, so you's have hazy memories of it
>>11375157LMAO what the fuck was that at 3:36? That shit it's like a random Youtube Poop.
Ghostbusters for the Genesis. Has nothing to do with the movies or the cartoon. But I think it's better than the other Ghostbusters game that were out at the time...
>>11373210treasureland adventure is quite the trip to begin with, and for some reason ronald mcdonald is in the center of it all>>11374717the part where homer walks boulder in hand to go jump off a bridge and the old couple casually and gleefully discusses how it "looks like young simpson is about to kill himself" somehow always catches me off-guard whenever i see that episode.
Not so much of a fever dream, but the Power Rangers video games made by the Japs always portrait Ivan Ooze as this otherworldly powerful sorcerer, that when I revisited the movie many years later and realized Ooze is just a chump that sprays people with slime, it really broke my mental image of him.
>>11373368you cat like there aren't other Simpsons games>>11374704epic>>11378201this shit was hard>>11378394that's weird, are you an avgn fan or something
>>11374832It annoys the shit out of me that people are even willing to talk about these games.
>>11374774That's not what the kids want when they think of Seinfeld. They want Elaine doing jump kicks and Kramer's special where he smokes a cigar and blows fire out of his mouth.
>>11378918Yeah. Mostly his older vids though.
>>11374209Greatest instruction manual of all time.
The peak of ALF licensed games. It is a Sega Master System exclusive.
>>11378375wow jesus christ. that was like saltybet ear raping me
>>11379561Those fucking BATS, man.Rest of the game is not actually that bad. Very basic and inexperience obvious but not horrible or anything.Worth a playthrough on emulator for its reputation, but I would probably have been pissed if I had actually bought it back then also because of its short length.
>>11374832Super star wars was critically acclaimed though, and at my local game store it was the most request game to played on the "big screen" in their game room. (They had like 16 normal 27" TVs and then one big projection screen for the hottest game of the month). You paid like $2/hr for unlimited gaming, for kids who didn't own consoles.EGM had it as action game of the year, and most people had it in top 5 SNES games of 1992. It was extremely popular. That was the year of Zelda, mario cart and contra 3. Not much else memorable that year comes to mind.
>>11378394When it came out it was one of the games made made people stop and look. They had it on a demo at the mall and crowds would gather to watch people play it. 1990 the genesis was very new to most non-gamers, and the graphics spellbound people. Ghostbusters had sprites detailed enough to actually identify the actors which is something these people had never seen before. The staypuff marshmallow man looking in the windows blew peoples minds. This came out at the same time as dr mario and castlevania 3 on NES, batman and final fantasy 1.
>>11375087I wonder if they just put them there because of the dinosaur craze of the late 80s/early 90s. Like maybe it was just a marketing thing.
>>11373469Were these A-Team games official or just hacks? That one is using the Star Wars theme for fuck's sake!I remember playing a ROM of a bizarre one on the 2600, it was just the head of Baracus flying around shooting things, I later found out that it was just a reskin of an existing 2600 game.I start to question if there were any legitimately made A-Team games.
>>11378658On a related note, I'm almost positive that the SNES version of MMPR The Movie originally had Lord Zedd as the final boss, but he was hastily replaced with Ivan Ooze so they could market it as "based on the movie" when it had nothing to do with it at all.
>>11375890You probably are dilating right now troon
>>11378940You got Filtered that hard eh?Back to /v/ so you can play the newest handheld slop
>>11380523Uh. I rented Super Empire Strikes Back once. These games are unreasonable on purpose, to pad for time, to artificially make the game seem "worthwhile." You gonna defend LJN games too, fucknose? They did the same thing. No one beat Arcade's Revenge.
>>11380518>You probably are dilating right now troonI'm dilating your mouth with my giant troon cock right now.
>>11373396Probably on account of being one of the earlier playmates figures released. So they were recognizable without really being in anything other than the Mirage comics.Triceratons didn't show up in the 87 cartoon until like... right before the red sky season started.
>>11379471I want a nude mod of Elaine where she's got a dumptruck like >>11374641
>>11373210It always felt uncanny to me that Smithers was the villain in this game and he had that evil smile in most of his appearances, he looked out of character. Also, his colors don't match and he wears a cape for some reason.Another example that crosses my mind is Bart vs. Space Mutants. Overall the game was weird, and it was also weird the aliens weren't Kang and Kodos.
>>11381516He was antagonistic towards Homer more often in the early seasons. I can see why the Japanese developers misunderstood.
>>11379561Wasn't that the only Alf game?
>>11381516His colors seem to be taken from his earliest appearances, minus the tan.
>>11374210Is this actually a horror game
>>11373210The Predator game on NES.Like what the fuck?I'm punching scorpions and plant things (?) And there's random soldiers.Every time I play it I'm just asking myself "what the FUCK is going on?" Fun game though.
>>11374641Built for Nelson Muntz
Fever dream pretty accurately describes a lot of 80s and early 90s licensed games.Hikari no Senshi Photon is a strange one. Based on a US lasertag chain, presumably released in Japan because their home use lasertag toy was released over there. The game itself is pretty unremarkable, a corridor maze shooter (would've made more sense as a lightgun game), but game's existence alone is rather bizarre.
Home Improvement, where Tim Allen fights dinosaurs. Most of these weird licensed games were probably something else entirely during development. But using an established IP meant more sales, so they'd force it in at the last second even if it didn't make sense.
>>11378918I was talking about The Arcade Game, not other Simpsons games. Mostly because the developers tried to have a lot of background details and characters in each level.
>>11381750who's steve jobs?
AliensHook
>>11381905
>>11381727>Home Improvement, where Tim Allen fights dinosaurs.Everyone only mentions the dinosaurs as if that was the whole game and this was originally a Jurassic Park game or something, but the dinosaurs are just the first act. I don't blame most people for not getting past the first two levels since they are long as hell and the game sucks, but the whole point was that Tim was going through different movie sets on the studio. There was also a level that was an Egyptian-like temple, a monster house, and a space station level. Unless they chopped up several games into one, I don't think it was a different game that was re-tooled (pun intended) into a Home Improvement game.>Most of these weird licensed games were probably something else entirely during development. But using an established IP meant more sales, so they'd force it in at the last second even if it didn't make sense.I don't think that's the cast for all, or honestly even most of them. I think for a lot of them whatever IP they are based on just doesn't really translate even halfway faithfully into any sort of game, so they just come up with whatever with elements from said IP they have the rights to. The vast majority of the time this results in just a generic platformer with the characters and other references plastered all over, but I don't think the majority of them were something else that they bought the rights to a random IP to just to reskin it as that IP. I feel that these games would feel much more similar to each other and like they came out of a cookie-cutter assembly line if that was the case. Fact of the matter is that videogame publishers see an IP for something that is popular, and want to cash in on it while the iron is hot, regardless if the IP does not at all work as a game.
>>11373396that's because a bunch of the TMNT games just reused or modified covers from the original Mirage comics
>>11374641
Wasn't there a Full House fighting game on the SNES?
>>11382691my dad cracked the plastic shell of my SNES when he threw it at my mom's face
>>11378375>Him pulling has arms into the air as he fucking screams his guts out>the other dog is just doing some epileptic danceYou are right....Somehow.
>>11382691No, there wasn't. You just watched this video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTg4KIxdpic
>>11382691no
>>11383726I like how Lum-chan grows and changes clothes until she's old enough to get married. Fun game.
>>11375000>Talespin on NES is a complete corruption of the cartoon. In the cartoon, the Sea Duck that Baloo flies has no guns. His only way of dealing with the pirates is to run away, or out-fly them, or hit them directly with his planeThe thing is, you can play the game pacifist if you want and shoot nobody (except the bosses). But you still need to get armed well for Don Carnage fight, that shit is unfair without powerups, took me two dozens of tries.I still think that game captures the show's spirit better than whatever the fuck was that Genesis game.
>>11373210In hindsight, Garfield: Caught In The Act is kind of weird.>The plot is about Garfield accidentally creating a glitch monster out of TV parts>The levels in the TV in-between the themed levels have an alien atmosphere>Sometimes bosses/characters from the Garfield series, sometimes they're not.>The Glitch uses pre-rendered graphicsGranted, Garfield does occasionally get weird spinoffs, but still.>>11378201All three of the South Park games of that era have that vibe, doubly so these days when they're based on the show's early days, so you have stuff like characters who aren't relevant compared to characters who became so in the show's later years.
We take them for granted because Mario is the face of video games, but imagine if it was an obscure Japan -only franchise, it's really strange and fever-dream like

Let's be honest, the last thing you expect from your cereals is them getting turned into Doom.
>>11388881less jews involved in gaming back then
>>11389525You can't blame the jews for this. they'd want a game that makes money.
>>11374676Heffalumps and woozles are the enemies in that game lol
I've been having these weird thoughts lately...like is any of this for real... or not?
>>11389554they'd die from inbreeding diseases
>>11378658Well, if you talk about images the games gave that it really wasn't like that, there's Super Shredder, a super cool final boss with different powers but in the movie he debuted he literally buries himself after transforming without doing anything.

>>11374832These games at least had 70% accurate stuff and were honestly fun games. The NES games are the most horrendous pieces of shit i've ever played.
>>11374974My brother and a jew he met in college wrote that. He's still working there (my brother, not the jew) and they still haven't paid them the cut off merch they promised.

>>11391894Wheel our mom died I did an impromptu ama on /tv/. It's lame as it's my brother who's the show runner not me. I'm 13 years younger. Anyway, he had Matt sign that calendar for me. Martin Prince is loosely based on me.
Anyway, is kind of off topic, but I'm technically part of the source material. As for the game, I did play it a child times but I generally avoided quarter eaters. As far as the op topic, I'd say the worst example, maybe not the most fever dream, is ljn's x men for the nes.
>>11388547Those rock guys with little arms that transport you across the quicksand and jumping up that giant tree are burned in my brain forever. Am I remembering correctly the spear throwing enemies in the tree were gingers instead of Abos?
