Previous Gameboy recommendations thread died the other day, I wanna have a general GB thread, I specifically want to talk about the Original and Color games but anything in the Gameboy family is also welcome for discussion.

Talk games, what you're playing, give recs, accessories, mods, homebrews, etc.

Been recently playing Operation C and while Contra 3 gets more recognition for its technically impressive downport, Operation C feels like the more thought out game design wise. Both good games, but Operation C is my preferred of the two.

Also have been playing Parodius and that is an excellent version of the game, very interesting what companies were able to push out of such limiting hardware for the time.

Kinda a shame that true handhelds are dead. There is definitely still a market for a system that's maybe $50 and fits in your pocket. Can be whipped out and played with in short 5-10 minute bursts.
Mobile games aren't the same thing because they're all F2P and aren't really designed for GAMEPLAY rather than jelqing microtransactions out of you.

Based. I prefer Alien Wars but only because I once went on a 2 week trip with nothing but Alien Wars and R-Type DX. I beat Alien Wars at midnight in the dark with my lamp. Great memory.

Good analogy - I guess its down to the GBC having a much wider color palette than the NES

Stuff like the oracle games look fucking amazing for the hardware - I love the slightly desaturated look they have on the original screen, many emulators make the colors too bright
>>
>>11378225
I guess the closest thing to this is the Playdate. Not retro but it sorta keeps the spirit, although I haven't bought one and idk if it would be up my alley.
>>11378242
I never connected the dots but yeah it's a very appealing look, I think that's why I'm so fascinated with the GBC, I wish it had more time on shelves but the GBA was just too popular for Nintendo to keep supporting it with new releases.
>>11378501
Nice, I need to get a copy of R-Type DX, that port looks really good.

For me, its Paperboy
>>
Metal Gear Solid for GBC is a solid game that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, no pun intended. Just make sure you have pen and paper handy for the cardboard box conveyor belt puzzle. I love Snake's sprites in that game. Balloon Kid is underrated as well. It takes the gameplay of Balloon Fight on NES and makes it into a proper adventure. I likely don't need to tell you to play Donkey Kong on GB, but I'm doing it anyways.
>>
>>11379345
I'm hoping to check out Ghost Bable at some point now that I got a cheap flash cart for a couple of rare games and translations.

I too love Balloon Kid, very fun game, also a weird graphical effect that only visible on Super Gameboy where they apply a warp effect on the title screen text during the boot up.

Also I never get tired of DK on GB, I used to watch my friend play it when we were kids before I'd get my own copy.
Even though I hear mix things, I'm mildly interested in checking out DK Land 2 since I have a vivid memory of me and other kids surrounding a kid playing it, I remember the graphics being cool looking as a kid even though they don't hold up too well today.

I also just discovered a Gameboy Color game reminiscent to Commando called SGT Rock based off some random DC Comic of the same name, looks somewhat decent.
>>
Wasn't expecting to dump so much time into this port of Mr. Driller. Used to own the sequel on GBA but something about the GBC version in particular is particularly more appealing to me.

Its kind of rigged on the last course, the computer players are unrealistically good, you need about -7 to get first so you need par or under in almost every hole so just about 2 mistakes means you have to restart. I think about 3 holes have a hidden bias in the direction of the ball you have to compensate for separate from the wind. My impression from the map was that more hidden courses would open up after winning but that didn't happen.

>>11377908
About half way through lemmings, really suits the GB pretty well with good music. Playing Castlevania 2, it just feels not as good as the first one even though it is smoother, feels like the levels go on too long compared to the first.

The tiles are more unified in appearance in the standard version due to the limited palette they all shared.

Mah nigga, I had mentioned it in the previous thread mentioned in the OP, honest to God one of, if not the absolute best Gameboy specifically from the ease of pick up and play and replayability. Crazy how accessible it is despite being a JP exclusive. Makes me wish the Shiren games were the same in that way, but maybe I guess there's fan translations for that.

Playing Pokemon Pinball and it might be heretical to say, but I think I like it more than Kirby Pinball. Not as many unique boards and mechanics but I like how much simpler it is on top of the Pokedex stuff.

Also played Twin Bee Da and have really been enjoying that one too, Konami really had a stranglehold on the Gameboy with all their releases (Cave Noire included). Hoping to check out the TMNT trilogy, but I was specifically interested in playing Radical Rescue.

Currently waiting for T2 Arcade as I've been mildly fascinated with gallery shooters on the Gameboy, the only other one being Punisher The Ultimate Payback. Both LJN games developed by the same studio, both being relatively decent but flawed in their own ways, still decent considering they're from LJN.

I'm not sure anyone is making custom chips like the CPU. The FPGBC is kind of what you're asking, but it uses an FPGA.

I tried out the Chromatic a couple months ago, the D-Pad is way better than the Pocket's, but the lack of a DMG display option and it solely focused on DMG and GBC is kind of a deal breaker, no GBA support and because of the screen being the exact dimensions of a GBC screen, it won't be conducive to playing other platforms, even if it's hacked.
>>
>>11387642
The best Bionic Commando is on the original Gameboy.
>>
>>11384140
Is there an English translation of this?
>>
>>11388093
There is but it isn't really necessary. Game plays perfectly fine without Japanese knowledge, but if you really need the couple bits of text translated, a translation exists. It's a game where you're going to need to remember what sprite represents what which can be done through trial and error or look up a guide/translated manual.
>>
I finally tried Metroid II for the first time. Beat the game in one big sitting. Nearly 100% the game too. Was a lot of fun. I had always heard it was slow, clunky, and awkward, but the game was great and improved several aspects from Metroid 1. I'll definitely replay the game some day.

So far this year I've played/beaten:
>Ninja Gaiden GB (beat) (okay, but incredibly easy)
>Metroid II (freaking sweet)
>Link's Awakening (really good)
>Both Mario Picross games (some of my favorite on the handheld)
>Star Wars EP1 Obi Wan Adventures (garbage)

Ayy, I had the same revelation with Metroid II as well, very good game.

Here's a rec I previously made in a separate thread, Sumo Fighter. It's a rare game so just find a download, relatively simple but fun action platformer that plays between a mix of Kung-Fu on NES and Shinobi.

It has a lite RPG system where obtaining items from breaking blocks or killing enemies can increase health or damage from your abilities.

It's worth mentioning the game has input commands, albeit nothing too complicated, usually amounts to double tapping a direction and pressing A or B. These activate your sumo abilities and some are necessary to beat bosses.

I get a little further each time but it can be hard, especially on hard mode where certain enemies show up earlier in the beginning levels and be bullshit.

Two other rare games worth looking into are Ninja Spirit, a port of a cool action platformer, and Chikyū Kaihō Gun ZAS, one of the most impressive shmups on the Game Boy, but absurdly rare.

I'd forgotten they were a thing. My brother owned the game boy color so I didn't get one until years after their release. Also, doesn't chromatic just skip the boot logo entirely? I don't think changing the palette would be possible unless they moved that functionality to a sub menu

Boot up your GBC/GBA and before the logo disappears on boot, you can cycle through the color palettes with the inputs mentioned here >>11388762 and you can keep cycling until I think roughly 10 or so seconds or unless there's no further input from the player.

It's one of those FPGA handhelds. All the Chinese ones are so cheap because they're just running an emulator on top of Android/Linux on budget phone chips. It makes a hardware clone that reads the rom data instead of reading the rom data and then translating it to a different platform.

The two competitors in the field are the FunnyPlaying FPGBC ($80 for the motherboard, then another 10-15 for your shell and buttons of choice or pre-assembled for $100-120 depending on vendor) and the Analogue Pocket ($250, also does GBA and has purchasable cartridge adapters for other systems)
>>
>>11391912
I'd rather just use a modded handheld.

The 1:1 screen is the real draw. I'd get a kit if they decided to release one. Apparently they're looking into GBA soon too which doesn't have a perfect screen option at the moment.

If you don't need RTC, Everdrive x3. If you do, get an EZ-Flash Junior. But be aware with the Jr. that the clock isn't totally accurate and the battery dies quickly.

Building on this, there are hacked versions of Pokemon GSC that let you just change the clock whenever, which is the one thing that can't be reproduced with the X3. Otherwise it wasn't really used.

Admittedly I've played very little of the NES original, practically a blue in my memory (outside of Hitler getting his fucking head blown up), but man I'm really digging this game. The gameplay is tight, it took me a minute to adjust to the mechanics but it's a really fun game. The difficulty is also just right, a little tough but well designed. Password system is a little obnoxious but I thank the modern age where I can just photograph the password easily with my phone.

With a dead battery, you have to do like what >>11392129 mentioned for the Everdrive. You have to press the reset button on the cart and back up the save manually. It also doesn't remember your recently-played list, but I seldom use that feature.

How reliable are gameboy colors in the year of our lord, 2024? I have some basic soldering skills and am capable of replacing bad caps and whatever but I don't have a lot of knowledge about other internal components.
>>
>>11394112
The only thing that typically goes bad is the speaker. Which is one of the easiest solder jobs in history.
>>
>>11394116
I think the power switches also go bad with corrosion and drain power usage
>>
>>11394131
The power switches do get corroded and unreliable sometimes but you can cheat at fixing them without having to replace or open the switch by carefully dripping rubbing alcohol into the switch from a q-tip and sliding the switch around. If you can, stretch out the q-tip a bit and slip that into the switch as well. Its a contact issue not a part failure issue so if you can get the corrosion off the inside of the switch it will normally work correctly again. I fixed my childhood GBC power switch that way. Otherwise you have to solder the metal top off the switch, wipe it out, and solder the top back onto the switch or just replace it outright.
>>
>>11394489
I found that this only somewhat improves it
I recently just got a new switch for my GBA which cleared up the drain of the battery so the LED no longer flickers
It also cleaned up the speaker clarity, but I assume that's unique to the GBA
>>
Sometimes I just like to pick up my GBC and hold it. Maybe press a button or two and look at it in my hand, but that's it.
>>
>>11396156
I tend to do this, but I'll at least boot up a game or two for a minute or so, I'd I get in the mood, I'll elongate my session. Sometimes I'll just boot up a game for a couple minutes, put it down, then star back up again after finishing errands around the house.
I love how easy it is to just pick up and play games on Gameboy.
