Aside from Halo, why would someone buy this back in the day versus the Gamecube or PS2?Microsoft didn't make a ton a games at that point so there was no fanbase and online multiplayer was not really a thing until 2004. Did people just buy it because it had better graphics and some PC games?
>>11387191Xbox ruined the video game industry
Well maybe you wanna go online, or you have an hd tv and you want to play some games in high definition, or perhaps you have a surround system and want to game. It's also got some really cool games and yeah it's the most performant console of its gen by far. It really had a lot going for it
>>11387191>some PC gamesNigga it had trillions. Xbox was a great and much cheaper alternative to a gaming PC.
>>11387191It's really easy to mod, and besides game piracy it made for an excellent media playerRemember that this was back when standard definition televisions were still common so plugging your PC into your TV to watch movies wasn't as simple as it is today
Because Xbox performed like an early 7th gen console. Your question makes no sense. I wondered why I had a ps2 and gamecube after getting an xbox because I never used them much after
>>11387191>Halo was a system-seller on its own>loads of PC ports that you wouldn't get on PS2/GameCube>Sega partnership gave Xbox a lot of sick exclusives>HDD for media capabilities and saving>Powerful hardware led to Xbox getting the best (console) versions of multiplats in 99% of cases>Some games even ran at 720p>Incredible homebrew scene
>>11387191It was a great console except for the video out and capacitor problems>HDD meaning you had no memory storage problems>Functional network system >It was competitive with Sony and NintendoDid almost everything right
>>11387191They were not only alive at the time, but capable of liking something yet unborn soiny/nintoddler fanbois on youtube didn't tell them to like?>Microsoft didn't make a ton a games at that point so there was no fanbaseIt was a great system with lots of good games and massively popular.
>>11387191I owned all of the 6th gen consoles back then.Xbox was one of MS greatest consoles, second to the X360 actually. MS was really trying to gain a foothold in the console market. They spent a ton of financial resources to get developers on board. For example Halo was originally a Mac game but they acquired Bungie and made it an Xbox exclusive title. They also bought Rare.In hindsight PS2 has a much larger and deeper library. GC has a smaller but really strong library. Xbox also had great stuff, usually the best multiplats and games such as Ninja Gaiden Black, DoA3/DoA-U, JSRF, PD Orta, Outrun 2, Gun Valkyrie, Otogi 1&2, PGR 1&2 and so on. It also had great online capabilities, a built-in HDD and you could easily mod it.My personal favorite console of the 6th gen is DC because it feels so unique and its life was cut short before it could reach its prime. PS2 has the absolute best library obviously and was the best console of that gen for that reason alone.
>>11387238This is a good reason to have one most other ones suck for this
Xbox was the best til 360. It lost its momentum during its end cycle and shit the bed after. Gaming has been diminishing returns since
>>11387191I wanted it for Oddworld, Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio, Burnout 3/4 and Blinx the Timesweeper.I've never played Halo on my Xbox.
Xbox having better multiplats is a fucking meme, most of them suck ass and have at least one thing wrong with them. Being in 480p doesn't automatically make them the best version. Xboxs video out is so blurry the extra resolution barely matters anyway.Genuinely outside of the couple of Sega exclusives and the occasional revisit to Halo 1 I never touch the Xbox anymore. Everything else is better played elsewhere.

>>11387431>all 3 major 6th gen consoles are validI like you anon, you get it
>>11387543>Xbox having better multiplats is a fucking memeNo, it's largely true. Even over composite on a 13" crt the difference is obvious.
>>11387191The only guy who had Xbawks I remember had a mother who was a doctor and he had every new console at the time, so we often came to his flat (which was rented by his mum), get drunk, smoke weed and normal cigs and play some good gaymes.
>>11387563I think console-warring is immature. I do get that people have preferences. Some people might prefer SNES to Genesis because of the larger amount of JRPGs on SNES. Basically nearly every commercially successful platform has quality games though.
>>11387191halo 2 single handedly destroyed quality game design in the video game industry and started the never ending graphics race. Fuck the xbox and now microsoft can't help but straight up destroy entire studios. Everything microsoft touches turns to shit and this brick turd started it. To think we could've had dreamcast sequels instead of halogearsforza boxes.
>>11387191Grew up with all 3. Played Xbox the most, then GameCube, last was PS2 - though the PS2 got a ton of burn as the DVD player in the house. In retrospect the PS2 probably had the best library despite it being my least favourite. In terms of why you got an Xbox - it was because of Halo. If you weren't interested in that, you weren't getting one. Halo 2 was on another level in this generation and we probably logged more hours on that (via Xbox Live) then we did for the PS2 overall. Other bangers for us were Fable, Crimson Skies, and Top Spin. We got the Crystal bundle for christmas (fable, crimson skies) and halo 2 as well. Pretty insane starting games for a system.
>>11387668I had an Xbox and never bought Halo, but I understand what you mean.
>>11387668We got an xbox because doa3 and oddworld. Halo was a pick up a month later. We were already fans of the old oddworld games and liked doa2 on ps2.
>>11387191because blade has the trenchcoat
>>11387191It had all the good ports.>Morrowind GOTY Edition>KOTOR I and II>Jade Empire>Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction>Star Wars BattlefrontHonestly, you could use it for just those five and it'd be worth the price tag right there, my family played and re-played them.>inb4 something something PS2Yeah, we had a PS2 also. Didn't use it for as much really, mostly to play DVDs.
>>11387194Explain?
I got an xbox about 6 months after it was released. I already had a ps2 and gamecube and mostly quit playing them in favor of being obsessed with halo and fusion frenzy. I never felt the limited library back then because I only bought a few titles for each console.I remember getting it after the price dropped to $199. I think that's what I paid for all 6th gen consoles. I would get out the gamecube sometimes for smash but ps2 fell to the wayside for me.Now that I have access to the whole library ps2 is the most played for me by far.
>>11387696what games did you play

>>11387191consoles this gen were cheap. I had all 3 and used my xbox for halo and multiplats since the xbox multiplats were better. My ps2 and gamecube were used exclusively for exclusives.
>>11387191In hindsight, GameCube + Xbox was the superior combo for Gen 6
>>11387191I actually didn't even know about Halo pre release. What won me over were the unique launch window titles like Blynx, Wreckless, Kung Fu Chaos, Munch's Odyssey and Gunvalkyrie.

>>11388498PC monitors have been able to 720p and beyond for a fucklong time. Regular TVs however, not so much.
>>11388786HDTV sets became available in the U.S. in 1998 and broadcasts began around November 1998. You had to be filthy rich, but these sets existed and the Xbox appealed to owners thereof.
>>11387191Nearly every multiplat was better on XBox. You can play many of your favorite games with a sound track of your choosing. Mulitplayer was always better on Xbox. Easy to Mod. Great to Mod. I modded two of them in Highschool with the Ex2 chips.
>>11388786The xbox didn't exactly have VGA out, so the point is moot.
We millenials were teenagers and it was considered the "manly, not gay" console to most people. I had all 3 and a PC, I played the PS2 way more, I even played GameCube more. People often buy into things for the image it presents. There was Halo, JSRF, and KotoR... and that was about it as far as I was concerned. Gran Turismo kicked Sega GT's ass.
>>11387191When it came out, I remember it being more expensive than the PS2 and also hearing it was more powerful with better graphics. My friend got one and we played some pretty cool games.I had a PS2, didn't have an Xbox until the 360.
>>11387783Is this real the only one with Trenchcoat is the xbox version?

>>11387635Yeah, the fucking machine that ruined console gaming. What little amount of positives in its game library, and even in it's software in the 360 era that made couch/split-screen play much better than its competitor by allowing multiple profiles in tandem offer the PS3's single profile limit rendering player 2 fucked as far as game progression went,It's thanks to MS and it that every single console now forces you to pay a subscription just to have access to the multiplayer components on games you fucking buy, plus the shit you mentioned.
>>11388580I did borrow one from a black neighbor once, played Hunter: the reckoning and Luigis mansion on it. I was totally underwhelmed. Bizarre console, weird control, little discs.

>>11387191>Aside from Halo, halo was a killer app man. but the xbox had the most power, ethernet, and a harddrive. it had really good games, but it doesn't get a ton of cred because most of them aren't locked on the system. spilnter cell was kind of mind blowing at the time. the ps2 was jank.
To get the third one after i already had PS2 and GCN
>>11387191>Aside from HaloThats a major exception because this game alone was a huge drawThat being said, it was new and exciting and for the parents who werent dirt poor, those that understood that the game library wasn't that deep would just buy a playstation 2The "families using the PS2 as their main DVD player" was not a meme, I remember that shit vividly, a bunch of homes I went in to in that era the PS2 was the family console, not tucked away in some kids' roomWith the xbox, I remember seeing one, maybe 2 homes with the playback kit, most folks just got a PS2>GamcubeAgain, some parents know what games their kids wanted to play

>>11387191Splinter Cell and Riddick were also hyped to no end.>>11387860Not him, but:-got the industry to first sell "extra content" as DLC, and before long stuff was being blocked within games that you have to pay for. Now it's normal to buy incomplete games. -pushed developers to focus on deliberately online games that require paid subscriotions to play. Offline modes deliberately got short and shitty to "encourage" spending more to get more out of your games. -held up HD gaming by an entire generation of systems without even once releasing a single game on their short-lived HD-DVD format, and then getting all 3rd-party devs to make games in the X360 resolution then porting from there to make sure the PS3 also only got X360 resolution. Don't forget that Sony invented blu-ray for Ps3 HD gaming, and pretty much only the exclusives made use of it.-used their money to destroy exclusive agreements for other systems, and even soured years-long friendships doing that. -steered the industry towards needing an online account even to play single-player offline games so gamers can be monitored.

>>11387191>Halo, PC GamesI mean, that is a pretty damn good selling point 23 years ago>because it had better graphicsIt varied, but you also had a decent number of multiplats that had either added content or some improved features. Seems like the only time you didn't get the best version was with PS2 games that were extremely optimized for that hardware and thus had trouble being ported to XbawksBeyond that, you also had a solid amount of exclusives that have been slept on as time passed but got their spotlight back then, and don't underestimate the value of the modding scene. >>11387191Halo was a huge draw, Xbox simply would not have survived without it. LAN parties were LEGENDARY, like what we experienced with GoldenEye but on crack. It was also the "not PS2" because there are always contrarians out there and they were growing since console gaming started to go mainstream.GC was far too childish lookingXbox was mature, edgy, American. Splinter Cell, Gotham Racing, Ninja Gaiden, Fable, Riddick, KOTOR, etc. were all solid.Prior generational failures like Dreamcast and Saturn simply didn't have enough appealing games to the American market. Saturn was a monstrosity, almost unknown to even the people who liked the Genesis. It didn't have the games and the Playstation was the new hotness. The N64 was the death knell for the Saturn. The Dreamcast was just too little too late almost. Actually it was too little too soon, really. Sega jumped the gun on the next generation. While it had some good games and was a much more svelte console (especially compared to the Saturn, with it's useless cartridge in the rear) like I said before it just didn't have enough appeal to the American market who were really settled in with the N64 and PSX>t. 39yo milennial

It is well-known that gamecube pushed the most polygons and looked the best for some games, eg. Rogue Squadron 3 pushed far more polygons than any xbox game ever did. The main character in the gamecube version of resident evil 2 has more polygons than the entire scene on ps2. >GameCube was the best technically. While Xbox had faster clocks and more ram, it was bottlenecked by a slow front side bus and low memory bandwidth. Had Xbox been given eDRAM and a faster bus it would have been no contest.https://www.neogaf.com/threads/6th-gen-hardware-wars-game-cube-vs-xbox-og-vs-ps2-vs-dreamcast.1491157/Having played lots of games on both consoles I don't know, the gamecube graphics strike me as being better, however for 3rd party games I'm really not sure, a lot of reviewers sometimes slightly prefer the xbox version. While xbox might have been SLIGHTLY technically superior to gamecube, the actual visuals it put out compared to what Nintendo put out including the aesthetic - thinking Nintendo IP games here, blow xbox graphics out of the water. But sure, the xbox is technically very competent and I do believe may be incrementally better in some 3rd party visuals. Nice bait though, look at all you got me saying.
>>11393942>It's a well-known fact zoomerIt really isn't, the Xbox was a generation ahead of the PS2 and GameCube and it shows. >>11393942>more polygons on screenBig oof. That's not the best yard stick of performance at the time anyway. Good, yes, but The Xbox hardware prevailed in many other areas anyway and was way more developer friendly. Nintendo hamstrung themselves trying to have a cute little package in multiple colors in an era where people started to care more about raw horsepowerXbox ended up winning regardless. Yeah they said the console was a beast but nobody cared and even when they did you'd find the GC was taller and had to flip up the cover to put a disc in where the Xbox had a front loading tray making it more friendly on the entertainment console to boot.Package all that up with the fact that the game catalog of Halo, Gotham Racing, Ninja Gaiden, Splinter Cell, etc. looked better to American teenagers (THE growing vidya demographic) than Wind Waker, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Animal Crossing and Super Mario SunshineNintendo's saving grace was they got some decent ports and Capcom exclusivity for a while. If I hadn't already had a GC I would have got one just for RE4That was the other thing. Their tech demo of Zelda blew everyone out of the water with a badass sword fight between Ganon and Link and then we get... Wind Waker: kid link with cel-shaded graphics. OOT was huge and if they had continued with mature Link and those graphics I guarantee you they would have done way better in the US>>11394067All it comes down to is who made better looking games and it's Xbox, hands down. Metroid was good, RE4 was good, but they don't match up to Riddick or Ninja Gaiden in graphical prowess.
