I liked the atmosphere but the controls felt really weird, like there was always input lag or like they were too sensitive. Maybe it's because I played the ports though? Bully should be studied as peak of what makes a video game fun. Bully takes every element unique to video games and merges them into one cohesive experience that actually utilizes the simulation aspects of games to make it greater than a simple action game or racer or platformer.>Platforming/ Racing - the joy of a 3D platformer or a Driving game is in just moving around. While Jimmy doesn't do tons of jumping, the core ideal of "Make it fun to move around" is key to every aspect of Bully. Whether it's climbing buildings, skating, biking, or sprinting around, movement itself is a core gameplay component (an element often forgotten in modern games). This makes the world into a playground. And it feeds into the ticking clock, the faster you get from A to B the more time in the day.>Combat - simple to pick up, difficult to master beat em' up combat augmented with tons of learnable throws, combos, moves, and then further amplified with gadgets and prank items that also have systemic impact on the NPCs (like enraging certain cliques.>Story - every single NPC is a named, unique character with their own traits, on top of that the world is filled with larger than life characters that you hate, love, or laugh at, adding meaning and story context to every action.>Simulation - the world is totally alive, time is ticking away and you must choose to go to classes (mini games) which almost function like an RPG where you can upgrade fighting, health, get new gadgets, etc., do side missions, or mess around with the world which all impacts your status with the various social cliques. Seasons change and the world reacts, every NPC is unique and can be bullied or seduced or befriended. All of these elements feed back into eachother making the game a virtuous cycle where every moment is fun and rewarding. Moving, talking, fighting, doing classes, socializing... everything is interactive and every single thing you do in the game gives a reward. It's a masterpiece.

It's weird that no one points out that it's pretty much a Kunio-kun/RCR game in 3D.

Another contemporarily controversial game made by Rockstar, and it was good to boot, so it got a cult following. That is a neat observation, though. But I never played RCR.
>>11396441The very first arcade game even had a premise similar to Bully. You're some hot-headed asshole kid who stands up for his friend that gets bullied by various gangs. I don't doubt that Rockstar looked at it for inspiration. Bully obviously does a lot more.

It is quite possibly Rockstar's finest game. Proof you don't need a big ass map or licensed music, every NPC had a purpose to, they only went downhill from there and I sure as fuck they never touch this license again, nu RS would fuck it up so bad.

>>11401034>subtle differenceye i'm not a connoisseur, its close enough
>>11401269Me neither, a distinct difference isn't close enough.
>>11401359dude i never intended to argue about this. its not chiptune but it sounds a lot like it i.e. close enough. its gay nerd music.be tee dubs anything thats "close enough" will have a distinct difference to the real thing
>>11401602Hey buddy I said no hard feelings and I meant it, our conceptualization of the phrase "close enough" differs to the point of friction so that can't be helped. Really what it all comes down to is how varied a person's tolerance is towards stylistic definitions, you didn't seem interested in why something has a specific name so your language should match your aloof understanding. Spare yourself from having this conversation again and use the general term of "electronic music" for your own sake if nobody else's.
>>11401656Sure no hard feelings, but what version of "close enough" doesn't involve a distinct difference? I'm actually asking.>you didn't seem interestedyoure right I'm really not. infact I already knew how chiptune was produced"Electronic music" is way to vague. I like electronic music. I could have said "gay nerd music" but it sounds like chiptune and that's basically synonymous anyway. Dont take everything so literally.
>>11401681I would say "close enough" would be an indistinct difference, but what makes something distinct/indistinct is subject to personal knowledgability. That's also why I said the actual issue is not the definition but rather how varied a person's tolerance is towards stylistic definitions, for example you accurately refer to Car Seat Headrest and Femtanyl as gay nerd music and yet neither sounds like chiptune. Silver Apples uses electronic modulation, sure, but nobody would think their music sounds like chiptune music.Really what it seems like you're saying is "I think synthesizers sound like old video game music" and what I'm saying in response is "I think synthesizers sound like 80s pop". Anyways, thanks for not taking anything I'm saying literally.
>>11401750But whats an indistinct difference? Could you please give me an example? Maybe I'm being dense but it seems contradictory. No I think that particular bit of music sounds like chiptune. 80s pop is usually higher quality. The nerd music is obviously supposed to sound like something a basement hobbyist would make.>thanks for not taking anything I'm saying literallynot everything =/= not anything. Context is key. No hard feelings, remember?
It would be better if it wasnt unfinished and the ports werent garbage.
Could YOU defeat Russel in fair fight?
>>11401834Russell's pretty easy to beat, you just need to whale on him persistently. So yeah, I could do that.
>>11401774Like using chicken bouillon rather than boiling your own chicken stock from scratch. Not the same, but similar enough to be an unnoticed replacement. In the case of the music, it is indistinct to you but not to me much like bouillon is good enough for most but would be noticed by cooks.>The nerd music is obviously supposed to sound like something a basement hobbyist would make. That's it, it should sound like an upbeat dungeon synth track, it's so minimal that it's like 80s pop to me. They even used a demo beat, using demos for beats is as 80s pop as it gets.Anything is included in anything, so it seems we are fated to talk past each other. Such is life.
>>11401774>>11401994You guys are waxing philosophical as if you aren't both dumb fucks. This conversation is asinine. One thing we can all agree on though is that Dragon's Wing Comics is the best safehouse
>>11400976i actually agree with you, it's not actually a chiptune but clearly the track's artist chose those synths to evoke the feel of chiptunes, especially considering it's the theme of a gang of nerds
>>11401994Ahhh I understand. Like a difference in the process but not (noticeably (by a layman)) in the result.>Anything is included in everythingthere is a very important logical distinction between the two, similar to ∃ and ∀.
