I haven't played this but I thought the original was interesting. The game is too different to be held to normal review standards for what is almost like a personal digital assistant (PDA) for your playstation.

Really cool, I liked it more than the anime. The game leaned a bit more into the horror element with a higher death toll (even if you never see most people who died) so that upped the stakes of the whole thing. I also felt like the game was more clear about what was going on than the anime was, though I watched the anime first so maybe that foreknowledge just made the game easier for me to follow. I dig the idea of piecing the story together by searching through files, with some files just being codes to access other files so that the game is open but also just structured enough where you're like to see some parts of the story in a certain order. The anime will always be more popular but this is the definitive Lain for me.
