Has anyone tried the ball bearing mod on the 8shitdo m30?Supposedly the hole in the dpad stem can fit a ball bearing to act as a proper pivot, that way the dpad rolls around the center axis (like a proper saturn dpad) instead of the whole thing depressing when you push down on it. Basically stock it's like the later revisions of the genesis dpad, very good but getting it to roll elevates it to perfection.
Why not buy an original saturn controller + raphnet adapter?
>>11414790because an M30 2.4ghz has less latency wired and the same wireless compared to a raphnet. Check the mister controller sheet if you don't believe me. Also the whole 30 year old plastic thing. The M30 is $15 when it goes on sale. Again, out of the box it's great but when you give it a proper pivot it gets elevated to GOAT status. The question is what's the best way to do so. Having it roll on a ball bearing seems to be the way to go but I have no idea what size to use etc
>>11415161measure the inside diameter of the hole the BB goes in with some calipers and get a BB of that size, dummy.
>>11415348Assuming OP doesn't own a caliper they could also just buy like a variety pack of ball bearings on a place like AliExpress and see what fitsSince it's a dpad you don't need anything even remotely resembling quality due to there being fuck all pressure on the bearing
>>114153605/32" should be enough right?
saturn dpads don't use ball bearings
>>11414790og controller + reflex ctrl
>>11415573no one said it did
ok fellas ordered 3.5mm, and 3.94mm steel bearingsI also found a listing for nylon 3.5mm so I grabbed that too, in case a steel ball on the PCB causes issues. Surprisingly cheap, the only issue is that I now have about 300 ball bearings on the way when I only need like 2...
>>11415573They do kinda, its just molded into the stem
This is what the 8shitdo is likeGonna jam a fucking ball in there
>>11414650How are the face buttons on this thing? I had retrobit genesis shit and the membrane just broke after 100h in SoR4 lol.Anyway, waiting for the progress report, cool idea.
>>11417805I have a 2 year old bluetooth m30 with a few hundred hours on it, no issues on my end
>>11417569that's not a saturn dpad
What is the best thing to get for that Sega feel /vr/? 8bitdo or the retrobit saturn/genesis controller? I don't necessarily mind the 8bitdo not being modeled exactly after the authentic controllers I just want something that feels good enough.
>>11419034Switch three button or pic related
>>11419151I like the big 6 myself as well, also since I prefer the croissant shape over the boomerang design. Not sure about durability, but I used mine (wireless on original console) for about a year now and I play the genesis regularely
>>11419151It triggers my autism that they're using 6btn arcade genesis d-pad variant instead of the d-pad found on the original genesis 3btn model. That og d-pad was much larger and more sturdy, also had less travel time and was more clicky.Point being is that those retrobits have loose d-pad that is prone to misinputs.
M30 has the best dpad in production today. What does adding a ball bearing gonna do for it?
>>11419605>does gonnagood morning
>>11419605It has a great shape but it also has issues with misreading diagonal inputs which makes the controller worse for games with 4-way movement.
>>11419605No/very shallow pivot
>>11414650>instead of the whole thing depressing when you push down on it.I have a Saturn pad right here, it does the same thing.
>>11417643k, keep me updated
>>11419919I just bought the retrobit genesis pad, same bullshit whole thing presses in. ITS AN EXTRA HALF A MILIMETER OF PLASTIC YOU STUPID MOTHERFUCKERS HOW DOES NOBODY UNDERSTAND HOW TO MAKE A PIVOTING DPAD ANYMOREThe rest of it is pretty good feeling though, especially considering it was $10 on sale
>>11419151All the retobit shitters are trash, the dpad always fully depresses with a very shallow pivot
>>11421154>>11421542I see what you are talking about, but to be brutally honest I really don't see how this affects gameplay, maybe with the exception of fighting games (and even then you can still get by with no pivot if you just try it for a while). In that case the only thing I can think of is the Switch pad and the Genesis Mini pad which are basically modeled 1:1 after the original pad, I just tried them and they do in fact have the pivot point.
>>11421675>I really don't see how this affects gameplayBecause you're a fucking retard NSO genesis pad and the genesis mini (which is just the retroshit) all have the same shallow pivot issue
This plebbitor went full monkey mode and drilled a hole out for a 4.7mm ball, but I think if you use a 3.5 or maybe 3.9 they should just fit
>>11422347It sounds more like the controllers always had that and people didn't realize until now. Even >>11415573 and >>11419919 reported the same issue with the og Saturn pad, unless we are all lying
>>11422356May as well use a trackball or analog stick
>>11422363It's not the ball bearing that's important, thats just how the original model 1 genesis controllers had a pivot. I just think using a ball is the best way to give a pivot back. The JP saturn controller should only have a slight give and not depress all the way like all the other shitters itt. >>11422367actual retard jfc

Just got done trying this out, for the steel bearings I found 3.5mm to be too small and still allowed a click down. I switched to a 4mm bearing and it stops the center push down but it makes the dpad feel tight, maybe too tight. This is on a brand new M30 so maybe i gotta break it in. Tested with King of Fighters and I was hitting my moves without a problem. Gonna sync up my M30 to my Genesis and play some Popful Mail or something to see if I like the 3.5m or 4m ball morehttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09C1J2JPSThat's the kit I bought.
>>11430584Wrong kit and wrong size
>>11430786How is it the wrong size? I measured the balls they are the size they say.
>>11430852As in you're using the wrong sizes
>>11430584You're also installing it wrong if you're just dropping the ball in. Probably why it feels tight
Retroshit genesis was also a success
>>11431038Can you share some more details on how it's the wrong ball bearing and how I installed it wrong
>>11414650So this is going to be the new "metal bearing in N64 controllers" thing, huh
I put a metal ball genesis pad in my switch 3 button controller. Had to cut the membrane a little bit but it's functionally perfect.
>>11431070RetardYou ruined a perfectly good old controller when all you needed was a little ball boy
>>11431058The shitty plastic gears grind themselves to death, makes sense to replace them with proper metal ones
>>11414650I own the first version of the Pro 2 with no hall effect joysticks and my complain is why the f is the vibration so soft? Is already maxed out in the app or I can't make it a stronger vibration? Anyway, it weights way less than an og ps1 dualshock controller, could that be because the vibration motors are not as good? I used 2 other controllers with my games and there are some vibrations the Pro 2 does not reproduce, why are people praising this controller?
>>11430584Doesnt this fuck up the PCB if you're constantly rubbing a steel ball against it?
Wouldn't a teflon bearing be better and easier on the surrounding plastic?
>>11431842With those sizes its gonna be either too small or too big and tight
>>11414650I want to buy one simply because it looks fun to play with.
>>11431917They're regularly $15 on aliexpress
>>11431050Fine guess I'll spoon feed you a bitYou installed it wrong, you need to pop the dpad off the stem before snapping and screwing the controller back together. That'll fix the tightness I'm still deciding what size is best in terms of feel and PCB safety. If you install it like I told you the PCB shouldn't have pressure on it, the only damage would come from the slight metal friction of the new pivot

>>11434656It doesnt move because there's no room for it to moveThe base of the dpad moves along the balls circumference...you know, like a fucking pivot...
>>11434660This doesn't make any sense, the d pad on the M30 is a 2 piece design if I take it apart and leave the back off it will fall out from the front and the ball bearing will be lost in the shell. I don't understand how this thread is this long and no one has even come close to clear cut instructions on what to do with the ball bearing outside of just laying it on the divit in the back of the dpad then putting it back together.

>>11438828because it is duh, at least it's usable
Did I unterstand the instructions correctly? I did the mod this way and it does feel better than the stock controller, but I see that some people are confused by instructions. Maybe I am too.
>>11441504Or should I place the ball below the base, so it is held in place by the PCB?
>>11441504>>11441527I can't fucking believe this
>>11441504That's what I did and people said it was wrong. I don't see what splitting the dpad is supposed to do. The ball bearing slips right through the hole on the rear of the dpad anyways. So just dropping it in without removing the back doesn't do anything since the ball bearing ends up in same place
>>11442738scroll up and read my damn post retard
>>11444023I've read every post in this thread, if laying the ball on the back then placing the PCB on top isn't how you do this mod then I got no clue on how to do it
>>11444154You know, it's actually kinda fascinating how different people can be. We're supposedly part of the same species, yet the approach to problem solving is night and day. I had a problem with the stock dpad, did some research, took some measurements and experimented until I found a fix I liked. You on the other hand...
>>11445294I can't help noticing you didn't say what way is the correct way so I can only assume placing the ball bearing on the back of the d pad and letting it ride against the PCB is the only way to do it. If that's the case the mode doesn't do a lot for the dpad feel.
>>11445354It's in the thread. You've already been spoonfed the answer, and somehow that's not enough. This is one step removed from demanding that someone do it for you.
