I wish NEC wasn’t so fucking retarded with the PC-FX. I love the look, feel and unapologetic Japanese anime feel to it all but it just didn’t have the games or the power
>>
It was a gen 3.5 console
like how the Dreamcast was Gen 5.5
>>
>>11484698
At least Dreamcast came out with a two year head start. The PC-FX released in 1994 and was outdone by the 3DO in terms of power. It’s also a games issue as so many of the best PC Engine genres and franchises abandoned the PC-FX
>>
I've recently learned that EGM had a report on PC-FX preview in January 1994, and they claimed that the console was capable of polygonal rendering! They also said that the initial price was gonna be around $500 though. If this is true, I can see NEC cutting all 3D rendering hardware from the final unit to reduce the price to something more reasonable, with intention to sell it later as an addon.
>>
>>11484707
>It’s also a games issue as so many of the best PC Engine genres and franchises abandoned the PC-FX

theres a rumor NEC didn't allow hudson to produce any games on it that weren't anime properties or animation based

it did get a power league game though so idk if thats true
>>
>>11484751
That’s Sega not allowing RPGs level of fucked if true.

It's bizarre how it was even released at all. How did they think this was ever going to be successful without a single third-party signed up? Or even a recognisible ip? The three launch titles are an FMV game, a dating sim, and a corridor walking simulator. Every single market metric was screaming that this was going to bomb.
>>
>>11485818
I’m surprised it got games up until 1998. This screams stillborn launch. It lasted longer then lesser failures like the 32X and the Jaguar
>>
>>11484707
>The PC-FX released in 1994 and was outdone by the 3DO in terms of power.
The NEC plans system debut on 1993 but delayed.
>>
>>11485824
>32X and the Jaguar
>lesser failures
Can we have some numbers, because i strongly suspect these two generated far bigger debts for Sega and Atari. And let us not even talk about the brand damage caused by the 32x.
>>
Hear me out, what if The 3DO Company partnered with NEC instead of Panasonic, and the partnership worked like Hudson and NEC on the PCE? The FMV focus of the 3DO and PCFX could have united the two libraries, and that huge head start on the 5th gen could have built up a sizeable install base before the Playstation arrived, if they could keep the price down. 3DO could have even handled the marketing in the west to build up momentum that NEC never had.

It probably still would have been a failure, but if you put together the PCFX and 3DO libraries you get something worth playing and owning.
>>
>>11485818
>How did they think this was ever going to be successful without a single third-party signed up?
Late PC Engine has a massive amount of computer game ports. Those devs were loyal to NEC and were willing to support the new platform. The problem was that their software wasn't interesting to a mass consumer.
>>
>>11485864
In terms of raw numbers it goes like this
>32X 400,000
>Jaguar 250,000
>PCFX 100,000
Debt and reputation may be worse for the former 2

The Mega Drive and by consequence the Mega-CD were massive failures in Japan and nearly the entire library of FMV games for that console was made for western markets

Cool cover art sells better in general. You can pretty much order rare games by aesthetics to find out which ones are the most expensive.

Jaguar actually made a bit of profit for Atari. They ultimately went bankrupt because their stopped producing their outdated computers, not because of the Jaguars.

The PC-FX is such a fascinating relic. NEC went all-in on a vision that was, honestly, ahead of its time with the anime-centric focus, but they completely fumbled on the execution. The lack of a 3D-capable chipset when everyone else was embracing polygons was just baffling. It's like they thought people would buy it solely for the aesthetic and ignore the fact that it couldn't keep up with contemporaries like the PlayStation or Saturn.

The library being mostly visual novels and FMV-heavy games didn't help. Sure, it has that unique charm if you're into '90s anime vibes, but the system was practically DOA outside Japan. NEC had the resources to create something groundbreaking, and instead, they made a niche product with zero global appeal. It's one of those "what could have been" consoles that make you shake your head in frustration.

I’m wondering if they thought 3D was some kind of fad? But there first tech demo was a 3D fighter called VX fighter so that couldn’t be right
>>
>>11488642
People sometimes question, why would Sega design Saturn as a 2D system if they had cutting edge 3D in the arcades? The answer is the cost. They knew that 3D was the future, but they thought that it was too expensive to bring to homes right now, so they wanted to wait a few years for chip production to catch up.
I guess NEC was in the same boat. They wanted 3D but did not believe that they could it on budget, so they bet on FMV for a while, presumably with intention to expand PC-FX's 3D rendering in a few years. Then PlayStation came out and gamers wanted full 3D action in 1995. To add insult to injury, Sega had managed to capture NEC's loyal "otaku" fanbase, leaving them with no audience by 1996.

NEC codenames:
*HuC62
*Project Tetsujin / Tetsujin
*Iron Man

>Hudson Soft - AKA “Hudson’s 32-Bit Prototype System” board for what later was believed to have been redesigned to become the PC-FX. Created by the same designers as the PC-Engine, the “IronMan” was sold to NEC HE in the early 1990’s, and shown to the public in 1992.

>The prototype board had a 25MHz RISC processor and a custom developed chipset, a HuCard type port in the front, another port beside that for some other device, Left/Right Audio jacks, and video hookups. To the rear of the board, a video cord is connected to another video output, and to the right of that, a control port which fits the PC Engine control pad is connected. Then, to the right of that, is what appears to be some sort of expansion port. Three other connections are also found in the back which are unknown for what they are used for. The dimensions of the "IronMan" were approximately 12x12in.

>This was the last piece of hardware that Hudson Soft’s hardware team developed (with previous designs being the PC-Engine line of systems and the Sharp X6800).
