As time goes on, that split kind of forces Joe into being "the wacky one" just because he's not as serious. So they're all about the same level in FF1, then in Special Joe's making jokes about taking over the series, in FF3 he's got the unique lines in the confrontation with Geese that reference how energetic he is...and then over in KoF he doesn't even have a plotline, so he starts out as the wacky one and there's nothing to balance it out. That all compounds until Joe's just a joke.

Sakura and Yuri are part of the AoF/SF rivalry though, so they pretty much have to be compared for historical sake. Even though Ryo and Dan have become even more different with every iteration, they fall under that same pairing. Dan even gets some of Ryo's moves he didn't have, like Omega mode SF4 giving him Zanretsuken. He also has the two handed Haoh style fireball in multiple games as well.

All the Capcom and SNK crossovers pair Ken with Terry and Ryu with Kyo but I always felt it should be the other way around. Terry is definitely SNK's Ryu, their OG hero, and they're both basically chill hobos who just live to fight. Ken and Kyo have fire powers, cocky personalities, and things going in their lives other than fighting (money, school, family, girlfriend, etc).The only reason to pair Ken and Terry is because they're blonde Americans but Ken is a fake one, he's a Japanese guy with dyed hair and one American grandparent.

>>11495834Aside from being the main protagonists when comparing SF to KoF, both Ryu and Kyo are the prodigies of the franchises (especially in the early days,) being the current generation practitioners for the Kusanagi bloodline and Hado respectively (with Ken being seen as the student who focused more on the practical application than the spiritual side of things.) Especially once you throw in Gouken and Saisyu. Both characters have changed a lot over the years, but in the early days they were a lot more similar in those regards.
