I only have plain on there as a reference for colour accuracy, that ain't no way to play. 2 is a basic CRT look, but you can see by itself the colours are too desaturated, and is again a control for what the setup looks like without bloom. 3 is a demonstration of how aggressive that bloom shader can be, especially with large swaths of white and bright off-white colours, when left unchecked. Still, the bloom itself is an integral part of the CRT look, which is why I'm using 4 to try making things a little more reasonable without abandoning bloom entirely.

The unchecked aggressive bloom wasn't as bad on some Genesis games I demoed in the last thread, so I'll have to go back and check them at some point to see how the parameter tweaks affect them.

I'm hyped about the new Atari handheld, it has a knob, trackball, dpad... keypad and more shit like 2 usb-c ports for controllers. I think a stick like the one on the NeoGeo Pocket would be better but yea.

Do you guys think it will run Jag games? I would like to play Tempest 2000 on it.

I don't think so, I bet the keypad would be for 7800 and 5200, I doubt it runs Jaguar.

Groovy. I hope this Atari handheld runs Jag, I would like to play some Tempest 2000 on it. That knob and trackpad makes it unique. Most likely it is going to have an ARM processor, but who knows, it has an air vent.

I mean, Jag has 3 action buttons: A B C; I don't mind if it is going to be mapped as X Y A or X B A. Since it has shoulder buttons (L1 L2 R2 R1) I wonder which games will include.

I'm so hyped

I use my N3DS XL to play GB/C/A games. The GBA games are native, and the GB/C games get a cool 3D border, it's like the game screen is inset into a real Game Boy. You know, like how the real Game Boy screen was some distance behind the plastic window.

>>
This whole time I've been obsessed with 4:3 screens (like the Anbernic rg405m) because of ps2/gamecube, but since I bought the RP5 most of the ps2 games I boot up just boot into widescreen automatically after simply turning on the widescreen hacks setting. I thought I was going to have to individually download each hack or something, this is great!

And also as everyone already knows, 4:3 borders are COMPLETELY invisible on the black RP5 anyway.
>>
>>11488578
is it going to be rooted off the box? like you'll just be able to start installing apks. also with no functional touch screen you'll possibly have issues getting through some parts of the game? i've never played a single native android game so i have no clue. i guess i'll find out when it's here, already ordered somethinganrd8
>>
>>11487731
I’m 32 and wear glasses, and I was playing DQ2 on my GBC recently and found myself surprised at how nice the screen looked. I’m not going to argue with people that they MUST sit in specific places or MUST move a lamp around their home to play with a child’s toy, but I personally think it’s worth it. I objectively think the original looks better, and I subjectively enjoy the nostalgic feeling of leaning on the couch arm to catch the table lamp.
>>
>>11488369
I can give you my genuine thoughts
In terms of general build quality it is excellent, like if sony were to make another vita I could see it feeling like this.
The biggest issue and dealbreaker is the screen. On any other anbernic or cheap device you get an IPS screen and it 'just works'. The miniled on this thing has all sorts of drawbacks like the vignetting, and not mentioned in your usual youtube reviews is that the screen uniformity is pretty bad. The backlight cannot light the screen up evenly so you get 'dirty screen effect' on the panel. This doesn't happen to such a severe degree on IPS handhelds and basically will never happen on an oled panel
>>
>>11488605
I dont think I've seen an android device that doesn't let you install raw apks
>>
>>11488628
Same. There's just something magical about the reflective screen. It's like you're peering into another world through a window or some shit.
>>
>>11488297
for amazon you're paying the ability to have no-questions-asked returns. I think its worth it, I would have saved a decent amount of money if I was able to try the retroid pocket 2+ before comitting.
>>
>>11488469
It must be nice to be the one who can buy these in bulk for like $30 a piece

After buying a steamdeck I'm going to sell some of my others. It's my preferred way to play 3D ps1 games that support widescreen hacks, n64, ps2, psp, saturn, Dreamcast, GameCube, and gba. GBA 3X Scales with only the tiniest bars on the side. The dot shader makes games look great.
>rp3+
totally pointless now. I always prefer my steamdeck.
>miyoo
I have a mini v2 and a mini plus. Can't make up my mind which one I want to keep but I only need one. Wish I had gotten that metal one, the pixel whatever. I'm keeping it for the ultra pocketability. I might get rid of it if the flip ends up being a homerun.
>anbernic arc
I love this. Keeping it for 6 button games, sega genesis, and 4:3 games that don't support widescreen hacks (most ps1 games, neogeo, 4:3 arcade games).

I'm still waiting on a good 1:1 system for Gameboy color. Everything else feels like a compromise. Id like to see a Gameboy color style device with 1:1. The powkiddy device that comes close is too cramped on the bottom.

The Odin 2 is a reasonable option because the steam deck is bigger. I like that the odin 2 is about the size of the switch lite, yet can pretty much play the entire gamecube and ps2 collections at 3x resolution

The illusion works in real life, it feels like you're looking at a real GBA screen, the border and the bezel disappear into your peripheral vision. I have an OG GBA too, so I can compare them side by side. And my BMI is only 29.

It does pretty much all of PS2/GC/Wii. Quite a bit of WiiU and Some switch games.

If you want more power than that in a handheld you may aswell go Steam Deck till you can get a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or 3 for the same price as a RP5 which is years away at best.

Been playing Windwaker HD on it and it runs a treat.

You know what is funny? You can still play Game Boy games; just add a video shader.
>>
>>11489501
I found the perfect setup on my RG35XX Plus.

Shader:
Select Zfast-composite-crt > Shader parameters, turn off scanlines.

Overlay:
Get the "perfect" overlays and install them. Then select the Perfect CRT 240p as the overlay and put the opacity to 1.00.

Enjoy. If you think it's too blurry then just use normal Zfast being sure to turn off shader scanlines.

I'm thinking of getting this thing.
The GBA SP was one of my favorite handhelds of my childhood. Which was kind of weird considering it was an old system by the time I got mine. I just always had a fascination with older games, and usually enjoyed them more.
This looks like everything I'd ever need in a pocket emulator. I love the clamshell design, I love the button layout. Apparently it can play DS, 64, and Linux native games somehow. Maybe that'd be cool to use, but I'd mostly use this for GBA and SNES games.

>Im thinking of getting this thing
>Heres some nonsense about why you should buy it

The shills aren't sending their best.
>>
>>11489789
what are you talking about?
All I said is how much I love the form factor and old games, and I mentioned that I've heard that it can play games that by all means shouldn't work with the control scheme.

I was expecting a reply with "Fuck yeah, it just werks" or "Nah, playing DS and 64 games on this is finnickey as hell"

I don't have the device. That's why I'm asking about it here, to get an opinion from someone who isn't a faggot behind a camera who got the thing for free, plays the thing for three minutes for footage, puts out a review, then chucks it in a drawer forever.

NTA but people interested in handhelds are often also interested in portability, and I feel like someone who wants to portably play retro games doesn't want their handheld to be bigger and heavier than the original home systems, and wanna be able to leave the house with it without needing to carry around a backpack or shoulderbag just so they can play a bit of Chrono Trigger on the bus

Slightly beyond /vr/'s scope, but I did some battery checks.
>AGS-003: Fine, took hours for the console to die after leaving it on the GAME BOY screen with the front light on
>USG-003: Seems to be fine, the hinge is incredibly loose for whatever reason
>TWL-003: Looks fine
>CTR-003: Starting to swell
>SPR-003: Starting to swell
>WUP-012: Starting to swell, GamePad unable to hold a charge
I want to replace the swollen batteries with OEM replacements, particularly the WUP-012 with the high-capacity 2550 mAh WUP-013 battery.

Was also pleasantly surprised to find that the top screen for my N3DSXL is IPS, though the bottom screen is TN. Beyond this, I'd like to do some deep cleanings.

There's some concern over the sharp buttons piercing the membranes and damaging the dome switches, I've put adhesive felt over the domes for mine but am considering lightly sanding the buttons to be extra safe. Battery is fine if you don't use a fast charger like a retard.
muOS is great, easy to assign cores and everything is just a front end for retroarch anyway.
Power is meh, I use it for psx and below. I expect N64 and Dreamcast are hit-or-miss.
Feels good in the hand, screen is nice, but buttons definitely need tape or felt to quiet them. Easy to mod that though.
Interested in seeing how the miyoo flip goes, will jump ship if the buttons are better.
>>
>>11490845
It's going for $62 right now on the website ($52 if you don't mind shipping from china. No thanks)
so I might just take the leap and see how it feels. Usually I like to wait a week or two for the initial hype to die down so I know that I'll actually want a purchase like this, but the price is so low that I might as well just go for it.
Really hoping that some GBA core developer figures out how to do proper link cable emulation. RIght now it can only emulate the wireless adapter, which only works for pokemon Emerald, Fire Red and Leaf Green.
from what I've seen DS games are about as good as you can get with one screen. either cram both screens together where they're the size of a postage stamp, or keep the top screen on until you hit a button to swap to the bottom screen. Might be a bit annoying to play Pokemon, and obviously impossible for something like Mario Party or Phantom Hourglass.

but yeah, it looks like a nifty little gizmo.
>>
Fellas I tried to order a Z1 Extreme Ally but the order got secretly canceled yesterday. What's a good alternative for the price? Should I Go with the Legion Go? While there is an issue with charging, specifically a small percentage of chargers using e-marked C to C cables get confused by the SP being out of spec, that also affects all the other cheap anbernic chinkhelds - which also have the chip next to the battery - and they aren't bloating in mass. Just use a dumb 5v brick with A to C cable, don't let it charge overnight or unwatched and you'll be fine.

Nintendo/Sony/Whoever comes to you and asks you to design them a new console.
What features are you putting on it?
>>
>>11491516
Yes, that's why it's better to carry an iPod Touch or a Sony Walkman (Hi-Res) instead of listening to music on your phone, or to carry a digital camera rather than recording video on your smartphone. It’s even the main reason why you might want to carry a feature phone instead! For example, it has better battery life, and you can emulate, take photos, record videos, and listen to music on other devices that are better suited for those tasks.

I agree with you, using a smartphone is cringe. How dare you take advantage of all its features? Let's go back to the '90s and have a device for each task!

Let the phone-bros have fun with their gamepads, they must have a reason for emulating that way.

just played 2 hours of gamecube on my phone and it only drained 17% battery. non issue. especially because I have no life, un serious job and detest non 4chan social media so my phone basically just exists as my emulation station. having a superior all in one solution seems a lot better than coomlecting the FOTM chinkheld for various "use cases".

if there was a chinkheld legitimately better suited for the task Id consider it but there really isnt. beautiful af oled screen (bigger display than any chinkheld), 500 gigs of storage so I can coomlect as much roms as I want, comfy responsive controller, bluetooth connectivity for speaker/headphones, emulator support for every console Id possibly care about (except og xbox), actually fits in my pocket with the controller in my other pocket, its just perfect. Some people are new to retro handhelds and need advice or recommendations, some people are at the end of those few years with their existing device and are looking to upgrade, some people have one type of system and are looking for a companion for different circumstances (for instance they have a Steam Deck, but want something pocket friendly as well), there are software updates for official and aftermarket OSes and emulators, new developments happen in the market that can be of use or interest to people, and some folks just enjoy the hobby and like talking about it.

Here's something I find handy, someone compiled all the widescreen hacks and made it into a single drag and drop file that, when applied right, will just auto-apply to any game you load up.

i have an LCD deck and it looks that bright when its in a pitch black room even with the brightness pretty far down

and in darker games it seems like i have to raise it relatively to compensate for all the light coming from the blacks and to be able to see it properly. so the blacks literally look like that

in a game like noita for example, thats what black looks like in a pitch black room with the brightness high enough to be able to discern the difference between the black and the colors

but in a room with light its completely different, black doesnt look that bad and it doesnt seem like you have to put the light level so high relative to the rooms light

Unironically...maybe? The reason the steamdeck was so attractive to me is that it was also a pc and i was already a linux user so it just works. Peripherals were always peripheral and thus you just need a back pack to put em in. Lugging a big tower around though? Not that's for like a lab or something. Now, its just a steamdeck case. Got plenty of room left over in the backpack....its wild. It's the reason i was looking at the ryzen 64gb model of the xoneplayer but.... damn, should I leave it like it is or make it with wide pixels?
>>
I like my RP2S but I wish it was more powerful
>>
>>11494642
The RP Mini was made for you then.
>>
>>11494485
Not retro, but... Why would you need a chinkheld for DS when the DSi XL is absolutely excellent to this day, that screen is amazing.
To keep it retro, it's also great for GB and GBC. And GBA if you can tolerate the GBArunner inaccuracies.
>>
>>11494710
Arent DSi screens yellowing?
>>
>>11494717
Mine sure isn't. I read that people who order them from Japan these days will get yellowed ones, someone speculated it was due to the humid air there or whatever. Anyway mine is fine so it can't be a universal issue.
>>
>>11494717
Your underwear is yellowing.
>>
>>11494642
Same. It was my first changheld and I'm glad I got one. My RP5 is on the way.
>>
>>11494710
What inaccuracies does GBARunner have? I played a couple games on there and didn't notice anything.
>>
>>11494740
Not every game has them. Most have minor audio or graphics glitches, and a couple have major glitches, like superstar saga, where you have to enter the menu and change a setting at the start of literally every battle
>>
>>11494717
No but my ds lite has moisture stuck in the screen from all the blowing browsers inside story makes you do
>>
>>11494664
im not paying more than 2x the price for not double the power
>>
>>11494759
Oh yeah? Well what if I said please?
>>
>>11494761
no
for 200 dollars I'd rather get a RP4pro lol
>>
>>11494785
Why RP4P over the rp5?
>>
>>11494794
50 dollars cheaper
because I just got the RP2S I haven't actually seriously done any research, though I do know the mini is overpriced for what I want
>>
>>11494798
Yah alright it was just price. The RP2s looked solid, the mini seems overpriced.
I've been looking at these for long enough my wife is wondering why I haven't gotten one by now.
Thinking about the rp4 regular or the rp5. The 1080p screen looked good additionally for using it as a handheld streaming device.
>>
>>11494431
Fuck me, Mini Zero28 and Touch Zero40 look fucking perfect.

>Both coming soon
>Never heard of MagicX before

I hope they're good.
>>
>>11494710
>Why would you need a chinkheld for DS
I'm not saying you do, but that device in particular has a vertical 16:9 screen that only really makes sense if you're displaying two DS screens
>>
>>11494818
>Touch Zero40 look fucking perfect
No it doesn't, A- DS compatibility means it's pointless.
>>
>>11493717
>if it’s a regular 5w
Yes. In fact the recommendation is to plug it to a 5w charger. But since people has fast chargers everywhere, a couple of them tried to charge it with those with c to c connection and it ended with the handhelds either fried or with bulging batteries. At the best scenario, nothing would happen but also no charge.
Funniest thing, Anbernic only needs to add a single piece of hardware on the board that cost pennies and c to c charging would work just fine (in theory)
>>
>>11494861
I've had various 5w chargers and the only ones that never fucked up any devices were the apple ones, but they don't seem to make em anymore. Any solid ones you could recommend?
>>
>>11494863
Ugreen chargers have been solid to me. Have one of those gan ones with 3 c ports and 1 type a and no issues. There’s a lot of them in AliExpress

again this is for 640x480 devices
>>
>>11493281
I'd expect to see a release either the end of this year or early next year with the OLED refresh in late 2027. Unless we expect it to launch with the OLED which I don't think is a realistic thing to expect considering Nintendo didn't do that for the Switch 2.
Question is, what are we expecting out of it? I'm fully expecting 1080p rather than 800p, it just seems like the perfect stopgap and every single one of their competitors is also doing it or going to ridiculous heights that it shouldn't like 1440p. I also don't expect Rog Ally X performance but something in between an Ally and an Ally X.
>>
>>11494598
>>11494974
Yeah, not much reason to make it with wide pixels when a 640x480 screen won't leave room for bezels anyway. A 16:9 version with bezels and wide pixels might be neat though, or for 3:2 would be cool for the 34XX in particular but others as well.
>>
>>11494710
>Why would you need a chinkheld for DS when the DSi XL is absolutely excellent to this day, that screen is amazing.
Some people want the ability to take screenshots on the device without a capture card, higher resolutions, the ability to iron out performance issues, the ability to have something integer scale 2x or so, RetroAchievements, better emulator performance for games prior to DS/3DS since the ported emulators are always worse than stuff you get on Linux or Android and always out of date, easier mod integration, etc.

I'm someone who takes screenshots both for posting purposes and because my memory is terrible due to medical issues that I end up with hundreds to thousands per game I play so I can recall what I did. Having something like that would be super useful over the DS which requires a capture card soldered into the actual handheld or the 3DS which requires you to run NTRboot every single time before you start any game.
>>
>>11493281
According to AMD, it is using one of their Z2 chips. According to Valve, it isn't.
>>
>>11495045
oh yeah true. i wanna make a whole set of bezel/scanline/grid overlays for 720/1080p for TVs and monitors as I havent really seen anyone doing this. i'd like to do it for the Brick as well, if i can ever get my hands on one. does that one comes with bezels already?

Aladdin
Batman Returns
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Deep Duck Trouble starring Donald Duck
Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Legend of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog: Chaos
Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin
Tails Adventure
The Lion King
The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck
The Terminator

I don't know if these 15 titles are for everyone, but they're probably my favorites on Game Gear, though there are a lot more that I've heard good things about that I think most would prefer, anyways these are my personal favorites.

the v90 is pretty fantastic if you can tolerate some SNES games having frameskip or just being entirely unplayable like starfox or yoshi's island. i love mine though, i beat both the zelda oracle games on it recently
>>
>>11495434
It's the perfect take out and about for a romp handheld. I tend to keep my handhelds and home and baby em/keep em clean as possible, but the v90 is a real solider and I actually play it.
