Decided to finally sit down and play through this game. Overall I'd say it's a good 3D dungeon crawler but I wouldn't call it a groundbreaking masterpiece or anything like that. I'm guessing the later entries are the reason this series has so many fans. Amazing atmosphere though. Also I want to say that this turned out to be one of those games that actually gets easier as you progress, except for the final floor. I had dropped this game like three times before because I was getting my ass kicked on the first floor. Well guess what it turned out to be the hardest part of the whole game. I've heard that the later entries are longer and more confusing but maybe I'll check the second game too. So what do you guys think of the first King's Field game?
I found the last floor to be easily negotiable because by that point I had the best sword and the best magic (I think I also had infinitely replenishing magic but it's been a while since I played it). I think the hardest part may have been that floor filled with nothing but Golems, it was very long but I don't recall ever feeling frustrated. Played it all in Japanese too. 2 really lost me though, put quite a bit of time into it but never made much progress.
It's exactly what you'd expect from a budget Japanese studio having their tits blown off by Ultima Underworld and thinking "we can do that at home"
I can't handle the framerate, and I say this as someone who grew up on this era of 3D gaming and still plays these games today.I've accidentally unloaded shit and went from sub-10 fps to like 40 fps in a second which caused me to run forward so fast I went off the edge. Gave up after that happened a few times. The game performance shouldn't be part of the difficulty...
>>11487639>floor filled with nothing but GolemsI think it's the fourth floor. It was easy though, I completely obliterated them, I don't know maybe going in circles and killing mobs all the time made me overpowered or something but yeah, even during the last floor when you get the moonlight sword your MP regenerates so quickly you can just spam heal>>11487661>I can't handle the framerateThere is a nasty 'bug' in this game but I may be wrong though, it sometimes feels like mobs don't slow down their attacks when FPS dips resulting in you getting some bullshit damage. But then again, I just tanked through everything starting from the second floor without too much trouble. I had to return to the fountain quite a lot though. I'm not really irritated by backtracking in games like this but they seriously should've given each floor its own fountain>>11487653Yeah and it's also surprisingly good for their very first game
>>11487661I don't understand why it's bothering you so much. Just enjoy the game.t. dont' give a fuck about wonky framerate.
>>11487653The "X at home" meme needs to fuck off, all memespeak needs to fuck off.>>11487661>I can't handle the framerate, and I say this as someone who grew up on this era of 3D gaming and still plays these games today. So surely you can handle the framerate if you play the same games today?
>>11487661I don't recall KF1 ever having any noticeable frame dips, it plays slowly in general.
>>11487661If you're emulating in Duckstation virtual CPU overclocking transforms the KF games.
>>11487816If he's using Cuckstation the framerate might be because of his usb prostate massager using up too much power.
>>11487808KF1 meaning KF1(KF2) or KF1(not released in US)?I played the one labeled "King's Field" that was in English on my PS1.>>11487816This is on original hardware.>>11487730>>11487806It's that bad, yes.
KF1,2,3 are brilliant masterpieces no other games come close. I so much desire for more games like this but it doesn't exist. There is Shadow Tower looking similar on the surface but it's plotless and therefore pointles shit, not an RPG.
>>11487939We must just have different standards of low framerates then because I didn't notice any and I play games that perform at Jaguar-level.
>>11487939It's not that bad at all. Never bothered me on real hardware.
>>11487816Thinking about it, that would probably make the games harder ironically. Like with some Mega Man games when slowdown actually helps
>>11488452They're so easy in terms of twitch skills it doesn't really matter.
>>11487603Is ths the Fromsoft THread. I feel like I got bearstein'd because Dark Souls suddenly has NPCs I don't remember ever existing and now suddenly everyone talks like they always knew this guy was there.
>fell down a pit>got respawned at the fountain>thought it made sense because it's the first floor, you fell all the way down>some time later fell down on purpose again>the game reset itself as if you died>thought it was random/depended on what pit you fall into like a retardI didn't even know the dragon fruits acted like a 'continue' in that game. I actually did fall down on purpose like 1-2 more times lmao
>>11487996Shadow Tower does a few interesting things:>The bestiary is huge and very creative (and you can even play all the monsters you meet in the 2P fighting game)>The economy... spending HP to repair weapons while needing to barter weapons for potions is brutal but innovative>Turns the King's Field/Silent Hill fog effect up to 10>Not caring about "fairness" in terms of player expectationsIt fails on a few counts though>The lack of music is meant to be atmospheric but just gets boring. And having no respawning enemies doesn't help>The level design has a few secrets but just isn't as interesting as KF, and gets little visual attention vs the creatures (tomb, brown cave, grey masonry)>Most Fromsoft stories are threadbare, yet the plot here is even thinner than KF and Souls despite full NPC voice actingThe sequel has more of an Oddworld feel which I liked
>>11487661>I can't handle the framerate, and I say this as someone who grew up on this era of 3D gaming and still plays these games today. This guy is remaking King's Field 2 but it's currently on hold as he's now working on a proper game right now. It's looking good so far.https://youtu.be/jVVHPjNysSo
>>11490161Gay.
>>11487661You know, I expected people to respond with something like "stick with it, you'll adjust to it eventually, it's a great game" or similar, not this pure cope about how the framerate is fine and I'm either lying or a bitch to even complain about it...
>>11490196With this post you've officially earned KWAB status. Gay ass bitch.
>>11487661>this era of 3D gamingAnon, you probably mean stuff like Tomb Raider or SM64 while in reality we are talking pic related here
>>11490196>wtf you didn't suck my cock for being a faggotFuck off.
I just beat KF tonight. It took a couple attempts for me to get into it, but it really hooked me once I got it. I guess I'll give KF2 a try next week.the 4th floor was pretty tough for me at first because I was going in with just a bastard sword. Decided I better backtrack where eventually I found the flame sword and that made the golems a lot more manageable. How are you actually supposed to beat the final boss? I just spammed magic and fruit.
i enjoyed it quite a bit myself, on my third try after i forced myself to tough it out for the first hour and get a couple levels and a better weapon, turning it into a tough but fair tense exploration experience.i liked it even more than the second one, desu. but i discoverd that my playthrough was easier than it should have been as the barrier at the shrine glitched out and let me through with only two elemental stones instead of having to place all four. maybe i should play it again to get a more complete experience.
>>11491282>I just spammed magic and fruit. That's how you beat him.
Its too slow
>>11491282>How are you actually supposed to beat the final boss? I just spammed magic and fruit. That's basically the strategy. The funny thing is that it's implied you are supposed to shoot exploding beams from the moonlight sword but for some reason regular magic works too, I don't know if it's an oversight>>11491562> but i discoverd that my playthrough was easier than it should have been as the barrier at the shrine glitched out and let me through with only two elemental stonesWell you probably went to the fourth floor underleveled because of that so I'm not sure if it's really easier...
King's Field filtered me within 10 minutes. I kept getting killed instantly by enemies that took almost no damage. Not a fair way to start a game.
>>11492091Find the enemies you can kill.
>>11490161That armor is from KF4 though
>>11491896>it's implied you are supposed to shoot exploding beams from the moonlight sword but for some reason regular magic works tooI didn't know that sword magic was a thing until hours after beating the game when I was finally taking the blinds off and looking up gameplay.I never used magic attacks so I didn't have the required magic level for sword magic to function, but somehow I still learned lightning bolt in the last level while smacking demons.
>>11493232>I didn't know that sword magic was a thing until hours after beating the gameSame, maybe it's mentioned somewhere in the manual but I didn't read it
>>11493274It's not in the english KF (as in King's Field 2) manual and there are no ingame hints besides doing it on accident
>>11492091that was the point. You should never give up and learn the mechanics. And after an hour or so of not dying you will start enjoying it. No, really you will.Keep trying on the skeleton.
>>11487603>I wouldn't call it a groundbreaking masterpieceI would. Before KF, combat in every dungeon crawler and even most RPGs came down to standing in one place and spamming left click. KF unironically revolutionized sword combat games.
Just tried KF2 (English KF1) after beating KF1 JP.This game feels like I'm playing in fast-forward. It's like they meant to release it locked to 30fps but decided to unlock the framerate at the last minute.
>>11493718It SHOULD be locked at 26fps. Use Duckstation to fix it. Without it it runs way too fast, as you’ve noticed. I think a lot of people bump it up to 30 to adjust for the added sluggishness (KF2 is more slow than KF1 by default)
>>11493718>>11493842Judging by Youtube vids and my own experience, fps in that game dips so hard like 90% of the time that its normal 'smooth' speed feels like fast forward. Speaking of speed, another thing that I swear I figured out only when I was halfway through is that you can actually run in that game by holding X>>11493412True. 3D game from 1994 with actual depth to its combat
>>11492091Don't spam attack, you have to wait for your stamina to be full to deal full damage (and make enemies recoil upon hit)Don't fight the skeleton, steal the loot and run away.
>>11489848As a pure game mechanic Shadow Tower is great, but as a roleplaying game it's the opposite, there is no meaning like playing procedurally generated slog. I hate this type of games and KF is polar opposite overflowing with meaning and soul creating an immersive adventure.
OP here, I beat the second game too. Honestly I liked it less than the first one, it's way more confusing and also harder. That boss gauntlet in the colosseum can go to hell too, fuck that seriously. And most importantly, I feel like 1/4 of my playtime was spent just running around refilling my flasks and talking to NPCs. The original King's Field was a very tight experience, I came to the conclusion that it's one of the most memorable games I've ever played but this one? I don't know. Also the ending part reminded me of Ys II>>11493718Are you enjoying it so far? >This game feels like I'm playing in fast-forwardIt feels like it constantly slows down and speeds up, yeah
>>11492091This type of post is why I'm convinced none of you actually play games. Did you even consider going a different way or did the concept of a game actually having multiple paths available blow your zoomer scalp off?
>>11494284I'm on second game too. it's been about 3 hours of gametime I'm almost lv 10 and still have to rely on dagger. is this normal or did I miss something back at shores?
>>11494501Iirc you can buy the Knight Sword from one of the merchants but other than that you are stuck with shitty equipment and absolutely no way to conveniently restore your MP for now. This game has a very shitty sense of progression in general compared to the first one. I think everyone will agree with me on this. You start getting all of the good equipment one piece after the other during the final 1/4 of the game or so. Also even if you take your time exploring every nook and cranny and killing everything on your way you only get strong enough to use weapon magic (60 STR 60 MAG stats) right before the final boss. There's definitely something wrong with all this unless somehow it's intentional which I doubt
>>11494542alright so it wasn't me after all. Well, I felt the same feelings as you when switched to the second game, the US first, and it was somewhat frustrating to keep on going with inability to hit enemies either vertically or horizontally not centered to you. Almost the same frustration you get with morrowind and cliff racers with low hitchance.
>>11491896By that point I had the weirdly named rapier and stats high enough to use its light needle storm sword magic so the last two floors were really no problem. Started again last night and the glitch happened gain. Think it had to do with dying on the arrow trap in the next room over and using a dragon fruit for a res. Went ahead and found the other two seals anyhow.
>>11494567Yeah that rapier is powerful. I sold it but I learned it's one of the 'legendary' weapons with magic only after beating the game. Should've kept it for the collection because I kept all of the other significant weapons>Think it had to do with dying on the arrow trapI checked the WR speedrun out of curiosity, the guy placed 1 stone, went to a save point, saved and loaded 3 times and the path to the 4th floor opened
>>11493412>Before KF, combat in every dungeon crawler and even most RPGs came down to standing in one place and spamming left clickI know that's bullshit, TES Arena has directional swings using your mouse
>>11494542>>11494557I'm really glad it's not just me who couldn't get into the second game after finding the original to actually be quite well-paced.
>>11494675The beginning of it is especially bad because it makes you feel like you've barely achieved anything during the first hours. Also, King's Field experts, correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like KF2J barely has any key items required for progression. For example, the Dark Slayer is an optional sword, right? Because while it unlocks the sealed rooms with the best armor I don't think the final area requires any items to enter. I think this actually makes entire areas of the game completely optional. In the first game each floor has an objective/quest you need to fulfill to progress further but in 2 this doesn't seem to be the case
>>11489420Which ones?
>>11493718Just replying to my own post to share what I found online:It looks like the NTSC release is locked to 30fps, while the other games in the series are locked to 20 (the PAL release is locked to 17). There's gameshark cheatcodes that let you lock it to 20 and it supposedly makes it play the same speed as the other games while also minimizing the frame dips.
>>11495582>https://www.speedrun.com/kf/forums/djtxfThis game runs differently on different PS2 models, let alone emulators. This is a shitshow but yeah, according to forums even on the PS1 itself the game 'fast forwarding' is still a thing
>>11487603>later entries are the reason this series has so many fansYeah the later entries called Dark Souls. KF never had a lot of fans on its own merits, only as the "DS before DS" meme games
>>11496185It was a niche series for sure but it had a fanbase in the west before Souls. A lot of nostalgiatard comments under KF-related content on yt. Also an old fan website called the Sword of Moonlight or something like that has started existence before Souls
>>11494284>Are you enjoying it so far? After using the 20fps gameshark code it feels a lot more consistent. Already a bit lost. Got 2 spells and ran into some locked doors. I think I need to fight some pikemen I found, but the music changed so I figured it was a different area I shouldn't be in yet.
>>11494279Mind you, the plot was ruined by the english translation heavily simplifying the story and combining multiple figures from the lore into one
Nobody ever mentions how there is an official remake of KF1 for Windows that came with pic relatedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rouzWg_fzZ0
>>11498060There's still a community around that shit. Shame the editor itself is really jank to run on modern systems. I wanted to make something with it but I couldn't get it to work proper. Tried fiddling with dgvoodoo and such a bunch but something was always broken.
>>11498060As >>11498202 said, it's a bitch to run now. It runs okay with an XP virtual machine. Lucky it's been fan translated, too.
Started King's Field 3, I'm still at the beginning but I'm enjoying it so far. Starting out is pretty tough just like in the first two games. How's this one in terms of difficulty compared to the previous entries anyway?
>>11498690They're all easy, anon.
>>11498719Well I wouldn't call them straight up easy, they are average in terms of difficulty for their time, which means still challenging
>>114986902 is the "hardest" because of the complex map 3 has a super nice automap. Only the death maze is really troublesome. In terms of twitch skills they're all super easy to the point that you can raise the gamespeed like 30% and still have no issues.
>>11498759Yes 2 was very confusing man, like the whole interconnected map took a while to learn and then there were various sections like the big mine that were really difficult for me. Looking at gamefaqs maps now, it doesn't even look that confusing but when I actually played the game it was
