I get a kick out of reading/watching retro reviews that are just bad. It seems the bongs always have the worst opinions on games, but I have a special place in my heart for the schizophrenic ramblings of George Wood.
>>11489564Bump for Clinton years
>>11489564Flights of Fantasy is a hilarious show because it's this out of touch boomer reviewing then new video games of the early to mid 1990's. They'd pad running time by just dumping gameplay videos and cinematics as well. The show apparently is not just video games though, but all fantasy, comics, sci-fi, films. There were a bunch of 90's shows like this back then, and many were good, but FF was not. George Wood is still around, and as an afterthought his company Navigtr (apparently they do cruises?) uploaded his video game reviews as "Gaming in the Clinton years" which then exploded because they were so silly.

>>11490286The George Wood gaming stuff absolutely has it's own appeal. He's not really good at games, he has odd tastes and he doesn't really know how to critique games properly. He's just some old guy out there riffing and isn't afraid of being eviscerated in the comments section or whatever. He was unique for his era and it feels even more unique now in the endless sea of Youtube game critics.
>>11490409George Wood wasn't a YouTuber. He did a public access tv show that some YouTube channel later got the rights of and uploaded.
>>11490413I know that.
>>11490413Navigtr is George Wood's own company, that i think does cruises? So why not just upload clips from his old tv shows to youtube?
>>11490413>>11490418For a long time, Navgtr denied having any connection to George Wood but that was obviously a lie. As for what the company *actually* does, who knows. Kind of suspicious.
>>11490540They have yearly Game of the Year awards? https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230214005491/en/Elden-Ring-wins-Game-of-the-Year-from-NAVGTR%C2%AE
>>11490563Well, yes, that's what they claim. They're an awards organization that hands out these awards that nobody cares about or has even heard of. What keeps the business afloat?
My favorite part of George Wood videos are how he legitimately finds like 25-30% games completely impossible without buying a strategy guide or using cheat codes.
>>11490575Yes, it's strange. Their youtube is ONLY clips from Flights of Fantasy. If i had to take a guess, George Wood has thought of ways to grift off the gaming community without really being a big fan of them. So he cooked up some trade guide as a means to grift fees. Wood likely has other small little grifting businesses like this that we don't know about because they're not video game related.
I've never seen a full episode. Do they ever talk about anime on FF?
>>11490575They were at PAX 2019 and handed out plaques? Wanna bet this was literally Geroge Wood walking around? It wouldn't shock me if the entire organization and website is just George Wood himself.
>>11490609https://navgtr.org/2016/01/13/help-start-a-roast/Read that and tell me that doesn't read like something George Wood would personally write up? He sees that Celeb Roasts are big, then thinks how he can get one created for a Gaming Industry big-wig then try to sell it as a tv special to comedy central or something.
I'm trying to find actual photos, not just logos or anything.
>>11490409>and he doesn't really know how to critique games properlyThe same can be said of pretty much anyone who attempts to review games. Video game critique is fundamentally at odds with one's ability to enjoy them and most people have no idea how to separate actual good and bad design from what they perceive as fun/boredom.
>>11489564George Wood's reviews are all kino. Current day youtubers can't make anything half as funny, and George was barely even trying. The guy is just a natural. His Toy Story review is probably his most schizo rant. You know it's good when even Retsupurae's videos on the guy detract from the comedy. Also, kudos for trolling FF7 fans way back when I was still learning how to spell my name.
>>11490626old gregg should be in the next soul calibur
>>11489564My last thread was deleted by a bong janny who wasn't happy I was making fun of bong reviews
>>11491030I never fails to amaze me how awful british reviews are.
>>11491305
>>11491337I don't know why game reviews died with gamergate. They should have died much earlier. What critically panned game made you guys realize "oh these retards don't know what the fuck they are talking about". For me it was War of the Monsters on ps2
>>11492815Honestly old magazine game reviews were mostly fine. If anything, they overrated games, especially Gamepro and Gamefan. EGMs scores were usually on the money. People who say "reviews were always...BAD!" are still salty a pet game of theirs didn't get a good score or were completely mindbroken by GG.
>>11492874Meant to say "American game magazines" Bong mags were all over the place.
I remember watching some show in 2001 where some fat guy said the chicks in doa3 weren't so hot because they weren't making out with each other.it was in the style of siskel and every with 2 guys Any1 know it?
>>11490617Didn't they claim he died a few years ago? I don't think they ever even proved it either, honestly if Navigtr weren't so goddamn funny they'd be shady as fuck
>>11492901Yes, now the video is taken down:2012:https://navgtr.org/2012/06/28/goodbye-george-wood-by-jeffrey-archer/2016 listing him as a presenter:https://navgtr.org/2016/05/05/pax-south-caucus-2016/

>>11491030>>11491305Hi, Vikram.
>>11493171The G4 revival was worth happening just for this getting unearthed for more material to shit on Sessler with.
>>11493171Trouble is, he was right.>all right, the story. lemme guess...>a young hero with some sort of memory problem who's fighting a massively overwhelming evo-fasco-magical empire.>cliched bird n' boy of action who will save us all is named... SAGI.There was very little to give a fuck about in JRPGs when the majority of ones making it into the public consciousness were basically the same shit as above.Yet X-Play knew an actual quality JRPG when they saw it and were remarkably fair towards them.4/5 for Shadow Hearts: From the New World and Shadow Hearts: Covenant?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_MT5Vh6uTghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e64slHvha4ABased on how people describe the west's smearing of Japanese games and JRPGs in particular during this period, you'd have expected Shadow motherfucking Hearts to receive 2/5 at best. Had they done a review of Koudelka, it would have indeed received a shit rating because the gameplay is dogwater that can't be salvaged by its great presentation.4/5 for Final Fantasy X-2?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G-uE1Ogv98The Final Fantasy that people of the 2000s loved to hate because the girl power Charlie's Angels angle rubbed them the wrong way?5/5 for Dragon Quest VIII?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3mZAAwZW-IA game that clung fast to DQ tradition while doffing the Dragon Warrior mantle?I can go through the JRPG reviews X-Play did for a while and pick out plenty of times when they were 100% fair - actually, that's all of them. The only time they gave games shit for being Japanese was when they were SHIT for being Japanese instead of GOOD for being Japanese.
>>11493210t. Sessler
>>11490540>>11490563Looks like they are in the same group as those game entombing companies a la WATA - and about as legit.
>>11491337He's right, Mega Man X is dog shit.
>>11493265I can just prove it exists, but for something that's been around as long as it has, they barely have any presence. It's very telling that George Wood's videos are the ONLY videos they have on their youtube channel.
>>11493391Their social media shows them having a tiny booth in 2016 with almost nothing on it. The rest of their pages are stock photos or listing their yearly awards. Their flikr has them hosting some event in 2012 with Tom Sizemore. I know from shit like Tommy Tallarico that unless there's an interest to dig into it, very obvious sketchy activities will go unnoticed because no one cared.
I'll show you something wel tall
Lara Croft get breast cancer
So are there any good retro video game shows that are available to watch? I love watching old shows about games like GCCX, and I started watching old X-Play episodes on youtube but I can't fucking stand Sessler
>>11494261Honestly, the topic of this thread is entertaining for various reasons and if nothing else is a fun time capsule. They're on Youtube under Gaming In The Clinton Years.
>>11494270The Gaming in the Clinton Years are just the short game review segments from Flights of Fantasy though, not the full episodes.
>>11490842Thanks to this thread I’m watching them for the first time. Absolutely hilarious
>>11493269X has the glaring flaw of being baby piss easy, which, following the review's accusations of 'finicky, unbalanced design', still invalidates anything they say.
>>11490743>separate actual good and bad design from what they perceive as fun/boredomShould you? A good design copied 100 times stops being good because it's boring for every experienced player. If you were objective you'd still have to praise the clone of a clone of a clone of a good game though, because it's still technically a good game, cloned
>>11490409>isn't afraid of being eviscerated in the comments section or whatever.Lmao. At most he'd get hate mail if someone actually bothered to write a letter to the station.
>>11494261I mean, even early Jewtube stuff like Classic Game Room is "retro" at this point. I used to enjoy watching that before the guy went insane and destroyed his own channel.
https://www.polygon.com/2015/6/1/8687867/rock-band-4-previewThe all-time classic, redditor has an existential crisis after being forced to play Rock Band.
>>11491030>the game about genocide is too happy??? Journalists don't even beat the games they play, not now and not back then
>>11492874EGM was the best.
>>11491030>bong is repulsed by color and joyOf course
>>11489564Wasn't there a review of Myst where the author outright hated the game because of his own bias and gave it a terrible score?
>>11489564I saw a few episodes of "Bad Influence!" not too long ago, and even having lived through that time it was such a surreal experience.Like looking into a parallel world.
i love pic related because it's so blatant that only 1 reviewer actually bothered to play past the first level
>>11497424It's hilarious how half the game reviewers seem to hate actually playing games.
>>11498515I was thinking about how miserable a lot of gamer streamers seem and it occurred to me if playing video games was my job I would probably resent it.
>>11498565Personally I think the issue is being forced to play games you don't want to. I'm sure when you're given "platformer #1273" to review for the NES you're just gonna drop it once you got enough material for your paragraph.
>>11491030>it's raining stockbrokers in tokyolol wow, unnecessarily savage for a review about megaman.Look, as someone who was actually alive back then, I get a lot of people wanted more "realism" out of their 3D games ala Metal Gear Solid, and the reviewers themselves said they are getting older, but to rate these graphics as "bad" even back on release is fucking lunacy. They are giving the game a bad review for being bright and colorful.... what EVERY Megaman game has been since it's inception. This is one of the worst reviews I've ever seen, it's biased and says absolutely nothing about the game itself, just that they don't like how colorful it is.
