What is the best Dragon Ball Z fighter across 4th and 5th Gen systems.
>>11489732before my time
There are none. It's essentially all trash.
Hyper Dimension.
>>11489732L'appel du destin.
Final Bout.
The solution is to play SF2 or SNK and pretend they're DBZ characters. Maybe some JoJo HFTF, etc
>>11489732They’re all pretty bad but Hyper Dimension is the closest to a good game. That being said no one would care about any of these games if Goku wasn’t on the label.
>>11489946LOL
For sure the best ones are on 4th gen.I like Hyper Dimension a lot but I like the Butoden formula even more.I'll say I like Butoden 2 for the way it improved the basic Butoden formula from 1 significantly, and obviously the polish of the story mode. Buyu Retsuden has the best roster while having Butoden 2's gameplay, and Butoden 3 has the best gameplay but it's the most barebones in single player content.Forever sad at the way Bandai fucked up Shin Butoden on Saturn, it could have been the definitive Butoden.
>>11490043>That being said no one would care about any of these games if Goku wasn’t on the label.I disagree solely for the fact I got into DBZ because of the video games and not the other way around. Playing Super Butoden back in the 90s was like a fever dream, the split screen, the flying and the weird ass characters with blond spiky hair really captivated my imagination as a kid. I miss those days when we didn't get everything for granted and everything was new.
>>11490107Don't care, fun game that plays as retardedly as most DBZ fights.
>>11490115Bandai only published the games, they were all made by TOSE.
How is this one?
>>11490628the ps1/saturn game is the sequel to this
>>11490118That's pretty cool. Never met anyone who played those games before watching the show. I wasn't one of them but I did play them on emulators before they came out with anything past the Ginyu Force battle in the US so a lot of the stuff in them was weird to me. Like how Goku and Vegeta had blond spiky hair, how Frieza was naked, who these random humans were (didn't know Gero and 18 were androids), and I vaguely recall thinking 16 was some alternate version of Recoome.
>>11491004I think it wasn't as uncommon to be more familiar with the DBZ games than with the series itself. In my country, I think I was only familiar with the very first dub of og DB (with Goku being called Zero), but that was only like the Pilaf saga, I remember watching just these first 10 or so episodes and then starting over. Then in another channel, they would have the DBZ movies, but I rarely catched them, and the one time I remember watching one it was one of the earlier movies without SSJ Goku. So basically all my source of information was original DB pilaf saga with a weird sub, and just the context that Z was "the adult time" story but I had no context on the story. First time I saw SSJ was for sure on Super Butoden.
Literally the only good Dragon Ball game ever made, retro or otherwise, is the first Budokai game. Solid gameplay that isn't overly complicated or too stupid, good enough graphics and a story mode with fully voiced in engine cutscenes that recreate all the key moments from the anime. This is all I have ever wanted from this franchise and yet they have continually dropped the fucking ball over and over again. I wish it just had the Buu saga in it because Budokai 2 had to go fuck it up with its shitty single player.
>>11489732GT Final Bout
>>11489732I enjoyed Buyū Retsuden for the Mega Drive best because I played it the most, but the SNES Butoden games are probably better on a technical level.
>>11491668It has those really nice early PS2 graphics, the character select screen is pretty charming too, as are all the other menus and option screens. The games that came after really streamlined how they looked and all had that really ugly 00s DBZ art style (the openings to 2 and 3 in particular just look plain and hollow). I like how it finally feels like Virtua Fighter but with a DBZ-specific energy button, though the fighting system never feels particularly deep (characters all share exact moves with each other too). I think the best part might be how there's no QTE special moves.
>>11492168kek, saved
>>11489732It's not the best, it's actually quite subpar... but the one I like the most is Ultimate Battle 22. I mean, that intro and those sprites are just so damn appealing, and the gameplay is... "fine" I guess.
Held off since you said 4th and 5th gen, but since people are talking about Budokai kusoge: kneel.
GT Final Bout remains one of the strongest examples of "not actually good but still treasured".
