why didnt nintendo release a Super mario world 2 romhack like they did with the lost levels? Imagine harder levels or just an expansion pack with new levels

Nintendo released a number of remixes of Mario and Zelda games for the Broadcast Satellite (BS) service they run for use with Satellaview, but curiously they never did anything like "BS Super Mario World".

There were BS versions of Zelda 1, Zelda 3, Super Mario USA (SMB2 international), and Super Mario Collection (Super Mario All-Stars), but not World.

Because "the lost levels" was a fully released game called Super Mario Bros. 2, not a level pack they made for the compilation.

I read in a nintendo magazine someone saying they should do this. I think they should have done more of this instead of starting the game engine from scratch, I would guess because Snes came out in 1991 and by 1993 you are already getting talk of the next generation so there might not have been enough time, imagine you release a console in 2021 and by now it already seems old and not worth investing too much into.
A few games sort of did this, Road Rash is mostly the same engine, micro machines in a way.

Lost Levels / SMB2J by it's nature is more like a 2nd quest / Master Quest release, since very little changes aside from a few additions to the base game like wind, super springs, or poison mushrooms.

It is interesting why Nintendo didn't make more nominal upgrade/level pack sequels, like they did with SMB2J. Maybe they felt justified in doing so with SMB2, given the cheaper price of games, but felt that it would be viewed as a ripoff if they did so with more expensive cartridge releases?

Would've been neat, but look at what Nintendo EAD was working on after SMW released: Super Mario Kart and Super Mario All-Stars. They probably assumed it wouldn't be justified if they could just revamp the original trilogy on top of also working on SMK.

Super Mario plus. An addon cart like sonic and knuckles that has more levels, more difficulty and more characters to play with ala smb2. You can connect smw to play it with other characters. Yoshi, toad, peach, Bowser, donkey Kong? That definitely would've saved the Saturn.

Because by the 90s, a console sequel by Nintendo that's just "The same game again, but harder, lol" wasn't going to cut it, it just barely cut it in 86 with Lost Levels, and that was only in Japan.

Honestly, it’s wild that Nintendo never went for a Super Mario World 2: Lost Levels concept. They had the tech, the audience, and the time to cook up something like that. SMW is one of the most beloved games of all time, and an official romhack-style sequel could’ve been an easy cash grab and a celebration of its mechanics.

Instead, they pivoted to Yoshi’s Island, which, while amazing in its own right, is basically a completely different game with a different vibe. It feels like Nintendo wanted to innovate instead of doubling down on pure platforming challenges like The Lost Levels. Maybe they thought a harder SMW expansion pack wouldn’t sell well in the West, given how The Lost Levels wasn’t exactly a hit outside Japan.

But just imagine the possibilities: new worlds, trickier mechanics, speedrun challenges, and even a proper "Star Road 2.0." Nintendo could’ve leaned into Kaizo-style difficulty before it was even a thing. The engine was already perfect—just add some clever level designs and call it a day.

Maybe they thought fans would be content with fan-made hacks down the road (little did they know the Kaizo Mario scene would explode decades later). Or maybe they underestimated how much players would want more of all time from SMW. Missed opportunity, for sure.

No cheap way to distribute it. It was dirt cheap to go to a disk kiosk and get japanese SMB2
