what the fuck were they thinking
>>11493521Atomic purple and its semi transparency was really cool on the Game Boy as well :)
>>11493521>what the fuck were they thinkingLet's release a dope af see-through gamepadK coolThat, that's what they were thinking
Translucent electronics, along with bucket hats, was the worst trend of the Y2K era.
Atomic Purple rules.
>>11493521Sony won.
>>11493521>let’s make the single worst controller of all time
>>11493521"Sony released their console with a controller which took our extremely popular SNES controller design but improved it further with extra shoulder buttons? Well then that means we have to make something completely retarded that looks and feels nothing like our previous SNES controller! Get to work!"
>>11493521we're making a great controller
>>11493521"let's invent analogue controls"
They were thinking: in 1999, the best video game of all time will be made with this controller in mind.
>>11493521>correctly understand you need an analog stick to really get the most out of 3d games, when the competition was still using d pads>now give the controller THREE grips it always amazes me how nintendo can be brilliant and utterly retarded at the same time
>>11493535You saw bucket hats in movies and music videos but rarely saw them IRL. t. Millennial It’s like apple caps in the 70s. You saw them worn all over movies and tv but few people wore them irl.It was a fashion trend they were trying to sell with middling success.
>>11493521For me? It's Jungle Green.
>>11493583Different games used different grips zoom zoom. Many games even had Z and L share their function when supporting both the dpad and the stick. Most wrestling games in particular used the dpad primarily and the thumbstick just for taunts. And everyone loved those fucking games for good reason. It was also very common with fighting games or anything 2D/2.5D to support both as well. The three prong setup was never designed for someone with 3 hands, it was designed to allow for either a dpad or thumbstick oriented control scheme. Considering you needed to switch controllers for that shit in the past,k having both baked into one was an effective choice for the time. Even third party controllers understood this when they reshaped the shell to be a more traditional 2 prong (even if these controllers were not always exactly quality themselves.) Ironically the thing that felt most awkward about those controllers is that the spacing and layout felt better as 3 prongs.
>>11493535Shut up fagI bet you have a transparent PC case with pride parade lights
>>11493613I'm well aware of how you're supposed to switch grips for a different scheme, it's just a fucking stupid ideahow about you make a controller where you can easily access the buttons/sticks/dpad from the same grip?what's that? every other fucking controller designed already does this?woah!
>>11493654I just showed you an example of an attempt at that using the technology at the time. Its biggest complaint is that the ergonomics were the part of it that felt worst, even worse than the lower quality components. Even the PS1 started without analog sticks at all you absolute fucking cantaloupe.
>>11493665>Even the PS1 started without analog sticks at all you absolute fucking cantaloupe.yes dipshit, that was part my first postI realize I've enraged you by speaking ill of nintendo but putting an analog stick on the first controller of their 3d focused console was a very good idea. the three prongs were not
>>11493654having two directional control devices on one side always works poorlyit works, yes, but it's always awkward during use of at least one of the two devicesN64 fixed this problem before it had even arisen and then nobody, not even Nintendo itself, ever replicated the solution
>>11493674What default controllers had both a thumbstick and dpad on the same grip BEFORE the N64? The components were larger, so it felt fucking terrible with the amount of space needed for the shell to accommodate everything in such a tight area. As technology advanced and the parts could be made both smaller and more space efficient, it became a lot easier to make the combination feel more symmetrical with the right hand. Thats half of why the Dualshock 1 was so important (even being introduced later in the system's life,) they took the idea Nintendo had and improved on it substantially and were able to do so in a familiar and beloved layout.Nintendo have plenty of other retarded first party controllers, but the N64 is honestly one of the better ones when you understand what they were working with and how it was implemented.
>>11493535Translucent stuff looks cool though. It did then and it does now. Yeah it's ugly in a way but it still looks cool. The only thing I'm against is the purple tinge, it'd look better in gray or maybe a nice melon color
>>11493685I remember the GBP had a translucent version that didn't have any color tinge outside of maybe a slight gray, it was certainly a choice.
>>11493535It was futuristic, you just didn't get it. Wow so many color options! And you can see the advanced electronics inside! EPIC WIN!!!!!That's the feeling it gave kids of the time. It was a nice feeling.
>>11493535They were cool until chinks got a hold of it and started pumping out cheap chinkshit with translucent plasticthat's why you associate translucent plastic with cheap electronics
>>11493521desu it was very comfy as a 5-10 year old as an adult its cramped. >>11493535translucents are the most inoffensive aesthetic especially when also offering normal solid colors. i'd wager that you only know of like 3 "trends" of the Y2K era(mind you gen z labeled it the y2k aesthetic so im assuming you're a faggy zoomer)
>>11493521Nintendo is ghey after snes
>>11493547They did. It should have been Sega but I guess they didn't wanna release more stuff
>>11493547sony always wins baby
>>11493568That game looks like candy crush with missiles.
>>11493521After seeing Mortal Kombat the movie, they didn't realize that they had to make controllers for 3 handed people. They thought guys like Goro exist!
>>11493592This
>>11493521>should we have a D-pad or a joystick?>yesWouldn't be so bad if the pad didn't suck and was barely used
>>11493684You're fucking retarded, dude. Pic related came out two weeks after the N64 in Japan and a month before it in the US. It's a far better and more comfortable controller than the N64's, with a far less retarded layout.>B-B-But it's not the deeeefault! Why the fuck would that matter? We're talking purely about controller design here. You're claiming it wasn't possible to make a "normal" controller at the time with a thumbstick and a d-pad accessible with the same thumb due to some technological limitation that you pulled out of your ass, yet Sega did just that. You are, objectively, wrong.
>>11493521SNES controller + stick
>>11493521I thought the 64 controller was bad until I or my hands on the dreamcast. At least the nintendo has 6 face buttons
>>11494098That won't let you use both the analogue stick and dpad *at the same time*. Not saying the N64 pad is ideal, but people complaining about it really lack imagination
>>11493521That was the best one. You're too young to understand
>>11493521What do you mean?
>>11493535weak bait.>>11493694I have that thing. It's magnificent.
did any games use the dpad+stick layout?
>>11493521filtering the normalfags
>>11494205Every FPS gameS&PBangai OA few others that I can’t think off the top of my head
>>11494294>Every FPS gameNot every. Turok which was the first and one of the most famous ones forced you to walk with the c-buttons instead which was retarded as shit.Later FPS tended to let you choose between using the d-pad or c-buttons.
>>11494304Lol, no it didn't, Turok is probably the first game to adopt it
>>11493521So, I don't get it. Were you all just too stupid to hold this correctly, or what?
>>11494306Why do you lie?
>>11494310Why do you?Start it up and change the control to left handed
>>11493521This design was actually brilliant for one specific reason; it centered your thumb over the analog stick. I think that's what they were going for. It's not quite as big of a deal now that most people are used to using their thumb at the weird angle required by traditional controllers.
>>11493521I never had a problem with this thing, there's three positions to use with it and the instructions for any game told you which one to use (but it was right 99% of the time anyway). You're trying to be retarded if you couldn't figure out how to hold/use one.
>>11493521How many N64 games actually let you use the dpad at all?I know for a fact that most N64 games don't make any use of it even for menu navigation but I've never seen a definitive list
>>11494437Tetrisphere was one I had that did. Goldeneye let you play southpaw I think?
>>11494437You need it for kirbyRe2 uses itMost fighting games probably
>>114935213 "D"
>>11493521Nintendo doesn't think. If it's retarded, they WILL make it.
It's an outstanding controller, possibly GOAT for fps games if only for the z-button on the back being like a real gun trigger.
>>11494827you have to be 18 to post here
>>11493521They were thinking based, that's what. Now all you "people" want are colors associated to your sexuality. Fucking faggot zoomer inbred worm.
>>11494098What kind of retard hands do you have that the fucking frisbee controller feels better than either of the N64 grips? That thing felt like ass, have you ever even held one?I specified the default to weed out third party controllers, as well as redesigns. Not only is that a redesign, but like you mentioned it wasn't even before the N64, so you couldn't even fucking get that right. The entire point of excluding redesigns is because companies copied each other's design ideas constantly, they still fucking do. I absolutely loathe how often people attribute the term "innovation" to Nintendo, but you're picking one of the only examples where they actually did it. You didn't need to buy a NES Advantage or a Power Glove or any stupid bullshit addon, the base controller was designed specifically to support the optimal movement methods for both 2D and 3D games simultaneously, natively. You didn't need to go out and buy another controller, you already fucking had it. Either you're trolling or you were more in your infancy than thumbsticks themselves were.
>>11493535Uncolored translucent plastic is used for all prison electronics. Colored translucent plastics look good though
>>11493702>it's not cheap plastic when Nintendo does it
>>11493535>Y2KThat trend started in the 80s and was big throughout the 90s, zoomie.
>>11493521>lets make a controller that actually has an analog stick that will make 3d games playable>unlike the fucking retards at sony and sega>lets also include a d-pad for traditional movement just to be safe>lets add a button on the back thats easily accessible>our controller looks silly but actually using it is very comfortable for a wide variety of genres and styles, and thats what matters>oh no but what if faggots 30 years from now make fun of us? hahaha jk why would we give a shit.based nintendo
>>11494098not being the default is kind of a big deal, dumbass. just look at the playstation, they released a dualshock but barely any games have analog movement, devs were forced to use shitty tank controls everywhere since not everyone had a dualshock. its even worse on the shitturn.
>>11493521It's the breakfast question all over again, some motherfucker just have a rigid brain
>>11493535if you were 10 yrs old at the time it was the coolest shit ever tho. Be mad you couldn't experience it as intended. For me, it was kino.
>>11495950My sister had that phone. I forgot it was made by Conair.
>>11493521>Create perfect layout for fighting game ports>Make the Dpad a complete after thought that sucks compared to their older ones
>>11497214Don’t forget: >release hardly any fighting games for our 6 button controller
>>11493521I know what the fuck is that controller.. looks like a schizo nightmare
I had an Atomic Purple N64. The extra controller was nice, and it was part of this bundle.
>>11497171everything about that time was amazing as a child, nothing like chilling in your lime green inflatable chair, sitting 5 feet away from your 27 inch trinitron, on a sunday afternoon with the sun shining into your room and sublime playing in the background. and you're only 10 years old, god it was so good
What a retarded thread
>>11493521They had to make a controller for the guests and lesser siblings. No one wanted to be stuck with those purple ones
>>11497359It had the best fighting game of all time
>>11493798Dont fucking piss on the only great n64 game dipshit
>>11498209your stupid trashure anime shit is not the only "great" n64 game.
>>11493521>play 2D plane games and segments with hold style 1>play 3D plane games with hold style 2Simple as. Issue is that N64 didn't have many 2D plane games and the higher ups basically enforced that all devs should be making full 3D games so the dpad rarely got used and made people wonder why it was there to begin with.I love this controller and have many fond memories of it. This is my favorite Nintendo controller.
>>11498214yeah thats right i forgot bomberman hero, everything else is decent or gay
>>11497494>extra controller in boring standard grey>it is plugged into player 1unlikely
>>11498271Yup, that's your backup. You kept one of these around for your clumsy, caveman friends who ruin shit.i actually really liked this controller though
>>11498275That controller had no right being as good as it was. The thumbstick felt surprisingly solid compared to even the 1st party one (both in terms of movement and durability) and the buttons were also pretty decent quality compared to most 3rd party ones, plus turbo programming. The shell felt weird to grip regardless of dpad or thumbstick though.
>>11499820Yup, it was a guilty pleasure controller for me and the only thing holding it back from being amazing are the weird (but not necessarily terrible) ergonomics. The stick was also concave and not convex which had its benefits.
>>11493535cringe
