But they go through a lot more changes. One of the reasons why Sonic & Knuckles didn't support Sonic 1 was the way Sonic would share the same colour profile as other objects in the game. Like the background skies. Sonic CD really does feel closest to Sonic 1 in the way the physics work and such. But Sonic CD could display larger maps. The spin-dash always felt tacked on, as it had no unique frames of animation. The super peel-out made its' debut in Sonic CD.

Stealth (a hacker that eventually went on to work on Sonic Mania) ported the Knuckles object code to Sonic 1's disassembly back in 2005 and it all turned out fine.
